I have purchased a Salton Expresso Machine. I have no instruction manual. Info at plate: Salton/Maxim Houseware Inc. Mt. Hello; Somehow I came across a Maxim Expres EX-102 Expresso machine. Found it while cleaning out the cupboards in my house. I have no idea haow to use it without the instruction manual. I have found my Salton Three For All owner's manual for EX-20. Please e-mail me if you need a copy, be sure to put Salton or Three for All in the subject line and I'll know it's not spam. The only thing I'm stumped on is what size of coffee filters it uses, as it doesn't say in the book. I actually have some spare parts too, as I found them in a resale shop.

The Salton-Maxim EX96 manual for everyone Written by Salton-Maxim Co. Directions for Making Espresso Coffee Guide for photo at right 1.) Cap for Steam boiler 2.) Steam valve 3.) Portafilter (coffee holder) 4.) Steam Wand 5.) Espresso coffee carafe 6.) Power Switch Step 1: a) Make sure switch is in OFF position. b) Remove water reservoir cap. c) Fill carafe with two to four cups of cold water using the markings on the carafe for reference. Pour into water reservoir. d) Important: When making cappuccino, add extra water to steam level shown on the carafe for two cups and to the bottom of the metal band for four cups. e) Close cap tightly. DO NOT OPEN RESERVOIR CAP DURING THE BREWING PROCESS. SCALDING MAY OCCUR IF THE CAP IS REMOVED DURING THE BREWING CYCLE. Step 2: a) Fill filter basket with desired amount of coffee. Lines in filter basket indicate coffee level for two or four cups. Use the measuring scoop for easy filling. Do not tamp coffee. Be sure to use a fine drip grind coffee. b) Place filter basket into filter holder. c) Insert holder by placing handle over the left side of the ON/OFF switch. Push it upward so it will be aligned with matching slots. Turn handle to the right until securely locked. DO NOT REMOVE FILTER HOLDER DURING THE BREWING PROCESS - SCALDING MAY OCCUR. d) Place cover on carafe and set it on drip tray. e) Steam jet control knob must be in closed (clockwise) position. Step 3: a) Push switch to ON. Switch is illuminated. b) In about four minutes, the espresso will start to flow into the carafe. Important: For cappuccino, refer immediately to the next 2 sections. For espresso, continue with next step. c) When coffee has stopped flowing, turn switch to OFF position. d) Before removing reservoir cap, open the steam jet control knob (counter-clockwise) 1/2 turn to relieve any pressure. To Prepare Cappuccino Step 4: Use 2 or 4 cappuccino cups or glasses. Fill each individual cup about half-way with cold milk. Follow Step 1 through Step 3b. Step 5: Line up milk-filled cups next to the machine. When the coffee starts to flow into the carafe, begin frothing each cup as follows: a) Hold cup by handle and bring up to the steam jet. b) Insert jet just under the surface of the milk. c) Open steam control knob with free hand by turning counterclockwise one or two turns. d) Move cup in a circular motion and allow steam to froth the milk for several seconds. e) After frothing, insert steam jet to bottom of cup for just 2 to 3 seconds to warm milk. Remember-cold skim milk froths more readily Over-heating milk will break down the bubbles. f) After removing steam jet from frothed milk turn steam control knob to OPEN momentarily to clear the iet of milk. g) When coffee has stopped flowing into carafe, turn switch to OFF position. h) Holding covered carafe, gently pour an equal amount of espresso alongthe side of the cup. Don't pour espresso into the middle of the cup as this will break down the froth. i ) Top each cup of cappuccino with a dash of nutmeg, cinnamon or chocolate shavings. Another Way to Froth Milk Pour desired amount of milk into a small pitcher or mug-approximately 4 to 6 oz. for 4 cups of cappuccino or 3 oz. milk for two cups of cappuccino. Follow cappuccino preparation instructions to froth milk. Serve the hot, frothy milk by spooning it on top of your cup of espresso. The froth will not readily pour from container, since it separates from the heated milk. Suggestions and Hints 1. If you cannot generate sufficient steam pressure to froth milk, you may be using too coarse a grind of coffee. Try tamping lightly. 2. If you run out of steam and milk is not foamy, you probably did not begin frothing the milk early enough in the brewing cycle. 3.If less than the full amount of coffee flows into the carafe and you run out of steam, you probably steamed the milk too long. 4. If steam jet hole clogs, allow machine to cool, and insert a pinto unplug. Do not use a toothpick. 5. If coffee flows very slowly, you maybe using too fine a grind or tamping too hard. 6. The glass carafe must never be used on a range top. Do not set hot carafe onto a wet or cold surface. Do not use carafe if cracked. 7. If you add liqueur, do so before adding milk. 8. The short power supply cord is provided to reduce risks resulting from becoming entangled in or tripping over a longer cord. Extension cords may be used if care is exercised in their use. 1) Pre-heat: Plugin, press "ON/OFF" to turn on. Indicator shows "--" then 5min countdown starts. Beeps 4 times when copmleted. "On" will be displayed as a reminder that the power is still on. 2) Cooking: Place the item to be cooked and close the lid. using UP and DOWN key to set desired cooking time. When the set time has elapsed the unit will beep 4 times. 3) Press "ON/OFF" button to turn off. The Unit will automatically shut off after an hour if not turned off manually. Make sure Power indicator is off (small "dot" next to the number) and unplug the unit.

I took my 20+ year old Maxim Expres Expresso/ Cappuccino Maker out of the cellar after about seven years this week . When I ran plain water through it as a test, there were what look like tiny metal pieces in the water. I ran it three - four more times and still get metal. Does anyone know if this means I should just throw it out or is there either a way to clean it or replace that part of the maker? I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

In answer to Peter's Feb. 16, 2007 8:27 PM question about the EX-102 wand: I can't find my manual, but I do have the original box. A photo shows the milk being frothed by the wand in a separate coffee cup. Printed under the photo is: "Milk is steamed while the coffee brews. A simple turn of the knob steams the milk quickly and easily. The frothy milk then tops off your espresso for a delicious cappuccino. Add cinnamon or nutmeg for a delightful finishing touch." I received a Melitta "hot pot" model MEK 17 W as a gift. It is made by Salton and it shows that it draws 1500 watts of electricity. It has blown two 15 amp delayed fuses on my electric range. I called Salton, on Melittas instructions, and their "rep" says that since it does not draw more than 15 amps on its own the unit is safe by US standard. I said that had I know, understood that 1500 watts cinverts to 12.5 to 13.6 amps, I would not have wanted this unit. It was used to heat tea water for my wife and I but now becomes a peice of electronic junk. I told the Salton rep that it should be labeled with amperage used instead of wattage and that there should be a warning label that it may need a dedicated 15 amp line just like my microwave did when I purchased it!

For those looking for product use and care instructions: If you don't have the name and the model number already, look on the bottom of your unit. Here are your choices: 1) VISIT THE MANUFACTURER WEBSITE and look at their "support" information, 2) After doing a search for the company website, go to the "contact us" link and call or email the company directly with your question regarding the owner's manual, 3) Try putting the model number, name and the words "PDF" and "manual" into a search engine. If nobody has a download of the manual available online, it won't show up in the search results. If it does show up it will be a PDF that you can download or view in your web browser and print. In this way, you don't have to post questions on a site that doesn't have anyone here to answer you except other people looking for the same info.
