Review: Aloha Island Coffee Private Estate Gold 100% Kona Coffee Pods

Review from Single Serve Coffee.com - Coffee Pod ReviewsImg 2872We like our Kona coffee, but often find it comes in blends instead of being 100% pure uncut Kona coffee. Aloha Island Coffee has been making 100% pure Kona coffee pods for over 2+ years now. Back when we started SingleServeCoffee.com, the Kona Coffee Pods from Aloha Island Coffee were the only other coffee pods you could purchase for your Senseo single serve coffee maker at the time. Now you can purchase these coffee pods for your Senseo, Bunn My Cafe, and Krups Home Cafe single serve coffee pod brewers.

A little back story on Aloha Island 100% Pure Estate Kona Coffee:

When Jim Robinette and Anita Harrington retired to the Big Island of Hawaii a few years ago, little did they dream they would apply all the skills they had gained through careers in manufacturing and technology to the growing of the absolute best Kona coffee.

“We had always admired the flavor of pure Kona coffee on our many visits to Hawaii” says Jim. “But living here, we soon realized this is a very special product that would benefit from the application of time-honored methods of Total Quality Management”.

We love the story of buying some property on Hawaii and making the time honored tradition of making Kona Coffee even better, and we'd also like to point out the Kona coffee used in the Kona Coffee pods from Aloha Island is harvested entirely by hand and pesticide free. YES!

Brewing the Aloha Island Coffee Private Estate 100% Kona Coffee Pods

Img 2879For us when tasting Kona Coffees, we like to look for a low acidity combined with a little bit of round but earthy flavor. The coffee needs to be a bit richer and flavorful than a medium roast coffee, but not be as harsh when drinking. We also look for a very smooth character, so smooth drinking a little darker roast in the morning shouldn't bother the stomach.

We fired up both our Senseo and Bunn My Cafe to see how this coffee compares in both a lower priced brewer like the Senseo, and a higher priced single serve coffee maker like the Bunn My Cafe.

Img 2877The Aloha Island Coffee pods weigh in at 10 grams a piece for the Aloha Island Coffee Private Estate Gold 100% Kona Coffee Pods. Each kona coffee pod comes individually packed in a foil wrapper. The coffee pods are very different from the coffee pods we received over 2 years ago. They are much less firm and more in keeping with a 10 gram coffee pod that works in a variety of machines - a bit looser and easier to bend.

We put these in the Bunn My Cafe at 7 ozs and the Senseo on the double cup setting. We used the the single coffee pod holder on the Senseo and pre-moistened in both the Bunn and Senseo. Pre-wetting your pod will really improve the coffee extraction and we can't tell you enough how important it is to pre-wet your coffee pod in the holder or to simply run hot water over the coffee pod holder to help moisten the coffee pod.

Tasting the Aloha Island Coffee Private Estate 100% Kona Coffee Pods

Img 2880Img 2881What's not to like? Both the Senseo and Bunn My CafeBunn My Cafe produced excellent low-acid, smooth, and delicious cups of Kona Coffee. The coffee is very rich and leaves a nice finish on your tongue after several sips. Mixing in a little cream and sugar produces an almost marbled quality to the mouth feel.

What we really like about this coffee is also the nose. It's earthy, but smells very different and intriguing compared to other coffee you might brew. It's subtle and we think it's a bit refreshing.

Overall we're going to give these coffee pods a solid 4 out of 5 stars. Pricing starts at around $12.95 for 12 pods putting these into the more expensive range. We think if you're looking for something different or a killer gift for that single serve coffee drinker you know - these coffee pods are for you.

Hello, I need organic pods, with simple packaging! No individual wraps necessary, no nice dispenser boxes. Just plain, easy-on-the-planet organic coffee pods.

Can you help? Thank you, Pamela Rhoades
