Keurig K-Cup Brewing Tip: Get Extra Bold Coffee with Regular K-Cups
We just had a reader write in a pretty amazing tip on how to make your regular K-Cups make an extra bold cup of single serve coffee.
I have a B70 Kuerig B70 and figured out how to get the extra bold effect with a regular k-cup.
Just put the k-cup in then start the 5.25 oz cycle until the k-cup just starts dripping.
Then lift the handle and let it sit for 30 seconds (or a little less) then go ahead and make the 5.25 oz serving.
Comes out much stronger this way! This method would probably make an extra bold coffee fill a taller cup and taste as good as the small size. Yum!
We've tried this and think the extra brewing time in the K-Cup does get a better extraction. This Keurig brewing tip will work in your
Keurig Elite B40 Brewer, Keurig B50, Keurig Special Edition Ultra Elite B60, and the Keurig B70 Brewer.

I just press the tea setting, let sit a few secounds after brewed. Then lift lid turn the pod so it pops a new hole then press the tea one again.Works even better.
Does this method for making a stronger cup of coffee work on the Breville machine?
Lancelot is right; you can do it without spillage. I was lifting the lid all the way up, which caused the k-cup to tilt and wet grinds to leak out. D'OH! The trick is to only lift the lid up just enough to stop the brewing. And there's no question, it does make the coffee taste stronger, although not necessarily better. It works well with Caribou Dayroast, for example, which is so light and weak that you're normally forced to use the 5 oz setting just to get any strength at all. That means you go through the k-cups a lot faster! But with this method, I can use the 7 oz setting on those "morning blends". I don't use it on extra bolds, since those are strong enough already.
The "mess/gunk" Scott talks about in his posting is completely exaggerated. I've been using this method for several months now--after having read about the method in the forums on here. I've never had to clean up as Scott claims. Yes, there might be a few specks of coffee grinds which may come out when you open the lid the first time, but no different then when you open the lid to discard the k-cup with the normal method. This is a great method and I use it all the time. The ONLY concern is that it MAY be damaging the machine when you prematurely lift the handle and stop the brewing process. It's uncertain if the unit is being damaged by doing this. If no damage is being done, then this is a must for anyone who likes a strong brewed cup of coffee.
First, I'm not sure what Bob means by "brew twice". You don't brew twice, you just lift the lid for a minute or so to let the coffee saturate (not TOO long though), then let it resume brewing. I don't know why the guy specified the 5 oz setting. You can do it with any setting, and in fact it makes more sense to do it with a larger setting, when the flavor is weaker, rather than the smallest, in which the flavor is already maximized.
Second, it does add a bit more depth to the coffee, but it also makes a bit of a mess when you lift the top. Some coffee grounds ooze out the top and slide down the top of the k-cup into the lid well. So if you use this tip, be prepared to have a paper towel handy to stick down into that well and clean out the gunk every time. Otherwise it will accumulate over time and get hard. Then you'll have a very hard time getting it out.
I'm using this method for now; it DOES seem to add a lit bit more depth, but I might not continue it if cleaning up the mess every time gets to be a drag.
Not to say this isn't a great idea, but is it really revolutionary? It's basically the same as pre-wetting a pod, just pre-wetting a k-cup..... this has been suggested a few times in the singleservecoffee.com forums..........
I wonder why I never thought of this. I knew that the larger cup gives a weaker coffee. Never thought that you could brew twice. Going to give that a try.
