President’s Choice introduces Coffee Italian Soda to Canadian Grocery Markets

Our Canadian correspondent, Shawn (a.k.a. "SH") recently wrote in to advise us of a new item which started appearing in most Superstore & Loblaws grocery markets the past few weeks. The grocery chain’s national brand is "President’s Choice" and this year, they added a new flavor to their line-up of Italian Sodas… coffee. Here’s what he had to say:

I’m sure most of you have had coffee in just about every imaginable form one could think of and the only thing which could compare to this would be "Coke Blak", however, this is not a coffee-flavored cola or a coffee-based energy drink. This is pure 100% Arabica coffee extract added to carbonated water without any added flavorings other than caramelized sugar to help sweeten things up.

Wikipedia describes Italian Soda as "a soda made from carbonated water & flavored syrup” and that’s exactly what this is. It’s like Coke Blak without the cola flavor. The caramelized sugar adds quite a sweet aftertaste to what can only be described as a "Nescafé-style instant coffee dark roast” flavor wrapped up in a very light carbonation level. The "fizz factor” (if I can even call it that) is a lot lighter than your average Coke or Pepsi fare and does not distract from getting the flavor across to the consumer.

Those of you who prefer making your own drinks can do so at home. Simply make a cup of single-serve coffee and allow it to chill. Afterwards, get a large glass, fill it with ice cubes, add some club soda or seltzer water and slowly mix in your coffee to taste. You can even add flavored syrups to create your own unique Italian soda flavors.

President’s Choice coffee Italian soda can be enjoyed very well chilled straight out of the bottle or served over ice with a dollop of whipped cream to create an "Italian Cremosa". Chances are that if you didn’t like Coke Blak, you won’t like this. If you’ve yet to experience either Coke’s version or this one, than you should at least give this a try if you ever get the chance to do so.

Pricing per 4-pack is $3.99 CAD + bottle deposit at most Superstore & Loblaws grocery markets across Canada. Further research online shows that similar Italian sodas might be available in America at Trader Joe’s or Wegman’s grocery markets.

We still have a few here at Superstores in Atlantic Canada, although I noticed supplies dwindling as well. I think Loblaws/PC might be ending this seasonal product or might have decided to remove it entirely based on customer feedback/sales results. We'll have to wait and see if it returns next Summer.

Can you still find this at stores that sell President's Choice food? Our Superstore here in Kelowna never did get the coffee flavour in. They only got the orange and the grapefruit and even those are long since gone now. I really looked forward to trying the coffee flavour when I saw it listed in their Insider's Report. I do make my own with cans of club soda and coffee, but I'd love to try theirs.
