Review: Wolfgang Puck Vanilla Francaise K-Cups for Keurig Brewers
Up next in our series of Wolfgang Puck K-Cup reviews is their Wolfgang Puck Vanilla Francaise K-Cups. Seeing as how French vanilla seems to be a fairly standard staple flavor in the K-Cup market (just about every roaster, including Van Houtte, have their own version), we were interested to see Chef Puck's interpretation of this classic flavor.
A strong aroma of sweet vanilla & hints of caramel emerge upon brewing. Out of all the French Vanilla K-Cups we've had over the years, we'd have to say the scent was a bit more pronounced than what we were expecting at first glance.
The flavor of the Wolfgang Puck Vanilla Francaise K-Cups was right on-par with the aroma as bursts of French vanilla mingled with lingering hints of caramel underneath. Compared with Van Houtte's own French Vanilla K-Cups, we'd have to say we much prefer this version instead. Acidity was on the light to medium level, but interplayed itself quite well with the flavors as the sweet taste kept the sour notes at bay in the background and helped give the impression of a more rounded & robust flavor overall. Quite enjoyable.
Body had shades of dark brown with tinges of slight amber & red when held to a light source. Labeled as a light roast, for once, we'd tend to agree. This roast is more akin to a warm embrace which slowly awakes you in the morning vs. something full-tilt like an extra-bold dark roast which uppercuts you abruptly to your senses as you peel your brain off the kitchen ceiling. Mouth feel wasn't oily but wasn't watered-down either... it was more in the middle with a silky smooth characteristic overall.
- Aroma - 10 - One of the strongest French Vanilla aromas we've seen in a K-Cup yet. We like the added undertones of caramel hiding underneath. Superb.
- Acidity - 7 - Balanced down the middle. Lively enough to make its presence known, toned-down nicely by the sweet notes in the flavor so that it's not overbearing.
- Body - 8 - Typical shades of dark brown with notes of amber/red when held to a light source.
- Flavor - 10 - Likely the most pleasing French Vanilla K-Cup we've had to date. Light hints of caramel are present much like in the aroma while strong hits of French vanilla abound in the forefront. Spot on.
- Mouth Feel - 8 - Balanced & smooth overall.
- Coffee Drinker - Suited best for flavored coffee drinkers who enjoy a light roast in the morning. If you enjoy anything vanilla-flavored, you're going to love this K-Cup.
Overall Rating: 93 - Exceptional
We're almost through the entire Wolfgang Puck K-Cup lineup and yet we're continuously being impressed by flavors which we thought would just be rehashes of existing K-Cups. It's quite obvious that Chef Puck must have had a say in how he wanted the final flavor profiles to be produced as we've been noticing not just the primary flavor present, but lots of underlying hints of accompanying flavors as well. Just as you wouldn't have a fine Italian tomato sauce without the choicest San Marzano tomatoes and accompanying herbs or spices, Chef Puck decided to take the same idea of flavor pairing into the K-Cup market as well. While we've had some duds at the beginning, we're glad to see as we reach the homestretch that we're finding a lot more hidden gems than anything else. Hats off to Chef Puck and the crew at Van Houtte for yet another exceptional K-Cup.
