Review: Barnie's Global Blend Coffee Pods
Toward the end of last year we were happy to see a few new retailers enter the pod market. Most recognizable among them was Dunkin’ Donuts with a limited release of 5 pod varieties in select parts of the country (check our forums for all the details). Shortly thereafter, Florida-based Barnie’s Coffee & Tea Co. introduced its own line of pods with comparatively little fanfare. However, Bunn has since chosen them as a featured pod brand in the promotion of their new pod brewer, the Bunn My Cafe Home. So what kind of cup can we extract from these Barnie’s pods? Let’s start by focusing on one in particular, the Global Blend.
Barnie’s describes its Global Blend as a combination of South and Central American beans grown without the use of pesticides or fertilizers and roasted medium. We like the fact that this coffee is organic and Fair Trade-certified. Tastewise, there’s even more to like here.
Fresh out of its wrapper, the Global Blend’s dry aroma is inviting. This is a flat-top pod weighing in at ~9.8 grams with "this side up" and "this side down" printed on the appropriate sides. We tried brewing it in the Grindmaster OPOD (8 oz., tea setting) and also in the Bunn My Cafe Home (7 oz., pulse setting). The results from both machines were impressive overall. In the cup, we consistently got nice depth of flavor with excellent sweetness, refined acidity, full body, and a dark chocolate finish. The official description for Barnie’s Global Blend mentions "fruit notes," but we didn’t find these to be especially noticeable. Regardless, this is solid pod coffee. We thoroughly enjoyed drinking it.
- Aroma - 9 - Very enjoyable.
- Acidity - 8 - Refined / well-balanced.
- Body - 9 - Satisfyingly full.
- Flavor - 8 - Deep but uncomplicated with a dark chocolate finish.
- Mouth feel - 8 - Smooth and clean.
- Coffee drinker - This pod should have broad appeal.
Overall rating: 89 - Good.
We’re curious now to try the rest of the Barnie’s pod line-up, and we hope that Bunn will consider adding this Global Blend--along with top-shelf pods by companies like Fratello and the Coffee Artisan--to future versions of the samplers that ship with their Bunn My Cafe Home brewers.
Barnie’s Global Blend coffee pods will brew well in your your Senseo, Grindmaster GPOD or OPOD, Bunn My Cafe, Bunn My Cafe MC Model, Cuisinart SS-1 Cup-O-Matic, Cafe Invento, Melitta One:One, simplehuman, Krups 1010, Home Cafe, Melitta MES5B Javapod, Kienna Sun Cafe, and other single-serve coffee pod brewers.
The best price online currently is $6.25 USD for a box of 18 Global Blend pods at Coffeewiz (or $9.99 USD for the same box on Bunn’s site).
Note: We purchased these coffee pods ourselves for review purposes. The box was dated as "best by" 11/8/11, which Barnie’s confirms is 12 months from when the coffee inside was roasted and packed.
