Review: Green Mountain Naturals Hot Apple Cider K-Cups

Review Single Serve Coffee

Today we review something which has been long awaited in the single-serve coffee market, not to mention something which is the first of its kind: Green Mountain Naturals Hot Apple Cider K-Cups. Ah yes, apple cider... we recall fond moments in our childhood sitting around the fireplace drinking cups of hot mulled apple cider on a cold Winter night or enjoying a nice warm cup after a day outside playing in the snow. While these days, we're recalling not-so-fond moments of shoveling said snow (for what seems like the bazillionth time in a row), we still enjoy a good cup of cider every once in a while. Could this K-Cup live-up to our expectations? Time to find out...

Brewing the Green Mountain Naturals Hot Apple Cider K-Cups result in sweet notes of apples & cinnamon, just like we remembered as kids and seeing as how the only other single-serve alternatives on the market are Motts instant-mix apple cider powder packets, we'd say this smells just as good, if not better than those. Flavor was on-par with aroma and blew our taste buds through the roof with lush sweet notes of apple and just the right hint of cinnamon in the background. Wow... just, wow. This was pretty darn close to the real deal! Amazing!

We're sure some of you must be wondering if the ingredients are nothing more than one of those powder packets thrown in a K-Cup, but rest assured such is not the case. As the "Naturals" name would imply, the ingredients are 100% all-natural and consist of dried apples, brown sugar, natural flavors (probably the cinnamon) and Stevia extract.

Body was an opaque tan yellow just like fresh pressed cider and had a mild acidity associated with the natural acidity of apple cider. Mouth feel wasn't as thick or syrupy as real cider, but was still full & smooth enough to satisfy our cider cravings. We'd like to note that although Green Mountain supplied us with a box of these K-Cups for this review, they in no way paid us to write a biased review in any way. What we wrote here today is what we really, truly felt towards this K-Cup. We honestly can't find ANY faults with it and even though it isn't a coffee, for what it's worth on our scoring system, it earned perfect scores.

  • Aroma - 10 - Smells of lush apples & sweet cinnamon. Next best thing to warming up real cider on the stove.
  • Acidity - 10 - Just like you'd find in natural apples. Mild & smooth.
  • Body - 10 - Opaque tan yellow, just like the real thing.
  • Flavor - 10 - Sweet apples? Check. Cinnamon? Check. Do we want about 5 more cups? CHECK!
  • Mouth Feel - 10 - While not as thick as real cider, it comes pretty darn close to mimicking the smooth & full notes.
  • Coffee Drinker - Obviously this isn't coffee, but if we had to pick a drinker profile, we'd say this one would be suited well for kids and anyone who loves real apple cider.

Overall Rating: 100 - Excellent

We really feel Green Mountain has a solid winner on their hands with these Green Mountain Naturals Hot Apple Cider K-Cups and apparently, so do the fans of this flavor. Thanks to an overwhelming surge in requests, this quickly became the most requested flavor in a K-Cup and although originally offered as a seasonal selection, your demands & concerns have been answered. Starting in Fall 2011, Green Mountain will be adding this as a PERMANENT K-Cup flavor in their line-up (except it looks like it will be somewhat seasonal). We couldn't be more excited and grateful that they made such a decision, so if you're one of the fans that wrote in to GMCR requesting this be a year-round K-Cup, give yourself a pat on the back. You deserve it. As for now, the current run of these K-Cups ended on February 28 and availability will depend on what's left in-stock. It was still possible to order a box at the time of this review, so don't delay if you're thinking about giving this flavor a try.

This is just but the tip of the iceberg for the Green Mountain Naturals brand. We're sure they'll be thinking of other all-natural beverages to bring our way soon. Maybe an all-natural iced lemonade for the Summer months? Perhaps other forms of ciders with peaches, mangos, lychees, strawberries, raspberries or blueberries? The possibilities are endless. Only time will tell what's heading down the pipe, but suffice it to say, we can't wait.

Green Mountain Naturals Hot Apple Cider K-Cups will work in your Keurig Elite B40 Brewer, Keurig B50, Keurig Special Edition Ultra Elite B60, Keurig Platinum B70 Brewer, Breville BKC600XL/BKC700XL Gourmet Single Cup Brewer, Cuisinart Keurig Single-Cup Brewer SS-700 and SS-780, and other Keurig K Cup brewers including the Keurig Mini Plus and Keurig Mini B30.

The apple cider is lovely maybe a little too sweet for me but I enjoyed it. Nice to have a lovely caffeine free cup when I am tired. I hope I still have some of the 24 left for Christmas

Now, if they could only make sugar free version for us diabetics.

Keep in mind that flavor is affected by cup size. If you brew using a smaller brew setting, this K-Cup will taste stronger/more sour. If you brew at a larger setting, it'll taste milder/less sour. Think the cup size recommended was something like 8oz?

Really? We tried this one in the office, and thought it was tart - more like a green apple (Granny Smith) cider than one we were used to enjoying. I don't know that anyone even finished their cup...
