Review: Green Mountain Coffee Revv K-Cups for Keurig
Today we decided to look at Green Mountain Coffee Revv K-Cups. These K-Cups are apparently aimed at the younger teen crowd as an alternative to sugary energy drinks and based on marketing campaigns at ski resorts and other trendy areas, it appears to have gained a positive response. Although it's not explained anywhere on the packaging, this coffee is supposed to pack in twice the amount of caffeine normally found in a K-Cup. Judging by their "More Coffee. More Kick" slogan, we're guessing this is done via making this an extra bold and cramming the K-Cup full of coffee.
Brewing these K-Cups result in strong, almost leathery notes which were hiding hints of earthy smoke underneath.
While not exactly billed as an extra bold, we're willing to bet that's exactly what we have here. This dark roast had seriously strong flavor (although nowhere near as crazy as Coffee People's Jet Fuel) while displaying faint hints of smoky dark chocolate. We wouldn't say things tasted overly "burnt", but be prepared for a punch to the tastebuds nonetheless.
Body was dark brown in color with shades of red when held to a light source. Acidity was surprisingly cut & dry which lead to almost winey characteristics and a decently smooth mouth feel that had mild sour notes on the finish. Overall feel was balanced between watery & oily. We even detected hints of sweetness lingering in the background after repeated sips.
- Aroma - 8 - Similar to most extra bolds. Strong leathery notes with smokiness hiding underneath.
- Acidity - 6 - Seemed muted but not to the point of being watery.
- Body - 8 - Dark brown with notes of red when held to a light source.
- Flavor - 9 - Strong enough to wake anyone up but not enough to pop our eyeballs across the kitchen floor as the aforementioned competitors. Faint hints of dark chocolate & smoky undertones.
- Mouth Feel - 7 - Smooth & balanced. Not too watery, not too oily.
- Coffee Drinker - This one's likely suited best for the serious dark roast drinkers in the household. If you like CP's Jet Fuel, you'll likely enjoy this.
Overall Rating: 88 - Good
It's always interesting when a company decides to directly take on an unrelated competing market and we think Green Mountain have planted a firm foothold in their target teenage audience with their Revv series of K-Cups while still appealing to adults & other demographics.
It could even be used as a possible solution to the mid-morning or mid-afternoon "sugar crash" associated with "power supplements". This K-Cup is therefore a solid alternative to sugary energy drinks and if you think a strong dark roast isn't enough to keep you awake, just wait until you read our upcoming review of the Revv Pulse K-Cups. So, did we feel buzzed after drinking this Revv K-Cup? Not exactly, but it sure helped lift the morning haze from our regular routine. Definitely worth a try if you're interested.
