Review: Keurig VUE V700 Single Cup Brewing System Makes Amazing Coffee, Tea, and Café Style Drinks
The Keurig Vue V700 Single Cup Brewing System uses Keurig's Vue Packs, and is a single cup brewing system capable of making coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and even lattes and cappuccinos. The Keurig VUE brewer can only use Keurig Vue Packs, and not K-Cups, which are meant for older Keurig systems. Also unlike the older K-Cups, pulling off the top of the foil lid with the filter attached to a VUE Pack one can recycle the cup part of a VUE pack.
The V700 VUE brewer packaging and color scheme
of orange and black is very attractive.
When opening the VUE brewer you'll find VUE Packs and instructions.
The manuals are easy to read and have useful information
regarding cleaning, and other VUE packs.
Features of the Keurig VUE Single Cup Brewing System
Brew Stronger - Custom Brew Technology means you can brew strong or regular coffee to suit your taste. With strength control you can brew just the way you like.
Brew Bigger - Brew full strength in a travel mug with VUE packs specially formulated to brew a bigger cup with the strength you expect. This is accomplished with a 16 and 18 oz size and special VUE cups for travel mug sized cups of coffee.
Brew Hotter - VUE offers a wider range of brewing temperatures from 192-197F.
Brew More - In addition to coffee, tea, hot cocoa and iced beverages, VUE brews café beverages.
Brew Technology – VUE customizes the brew process - adjusting water pressure, timing and airflow. You can create frothy cafe beverages with air-infusion.
Be More Green - The Cup part of the VUE Packs are able to be recycled. It's also easier to compost the grounds as well because the filter can be easily removed.
Brew More Sizes – You can now brew 4oz, 6ox, 8oz, 10oz, 12oz, 14oz,16 oz, or 18 oz size beverages and with the larger 74oz reservoir you'll fill the VUE with water less often
The temp at the cup on the default 192F setting is 186-187 and setting
on 197 gets you in the 190+ range. AWESOME work Keurig.
How are VUE Cups different than K-Cups?
First and foremost a portion of the Keurig Vue Packs can be recycled. By pulling off the lid of the VUE cup, the foil and filter stay together and can be thrown away, but the VUE plastic cup can be recycled if your town supports plastic #5.
VUE Cups also come in a variety of sizes. The standard VUE cup will work for most coffees, teas, and cocoas, but the travel mug or stronger coffees will come in a VUE cup that is larger. This doesn’t' mean you have to keep track as the VUE cups all work with Keurig Vue V700 Single Cup Brewing System, and you simply tell the VUE brewer which type of beverage you are brewing by selecting it on the LCD screen.
VUE Packs come in different sizes to make different beverages. All sizes
will work with the VUE brewer. Shown here the larger VUE packs are for stronger cups of coffee
or travel mug sized coffees.
You can see a size comparison in the photo above. The Italian roast VUE cup contains more coffee, and also we expect a different filter method to make a stronger cup of coffee. Also the travel mug VUE cups are larger so they will make a larger stronger cup of single serve coffee.
Also – K-Cups will not work in a VUE brewer, and Keurig Vue Packs will not work in a K-Cup brewer. Look for the VUE symbol when buying VUE packs for your VUE brewer.
Making a cup of Coffee with the VUE Brewer
When making a cup of coffee with the VUE brewer, you can select to have a stronger cup of coffee, and also the cup size. Choosing the strong option makes the brew time take a little longer, and the result is a very strong cup of coffee.
Here's an italian roast cup of VUE coffee.
This video shows the VUE brewer in action. There is no longer the priming pump, but
more of a piston type brewing mechanism for delivering water throughout
All of the coffees we tried came out tasting a bit bolder, and more flavorful then their K-Cup counterparts. The Barista Prima Italian roast on the strong setting was what we would call café house strong. And the Tully's French roast even on the standard setting had the taste of more coffee in the cup.
We also enjoyed setting the brew temp to be at 197F instead of the default 192. We think a little hotter brew temp results in better extraction, and our taste buds confirmed it.
Making Other Single Cup Drinks with the VUE Brewing System
You can also selected iced drinks and café style drinks when using different VUE packs with the VUE brewer. We tried the Vanilla Latte from the Barista Prima line and the results were good.
The milk in the Keurig Vue Pack is from powder, and the frothing is done first on a 4 oz setting. Results of the frothed milk were more airy than frothy. We then used a second VUE cup for coffee, and then the two were mixed together in the cup.
A cafe style drink uses a two step process with two VUE Packs.
Frothing is step one.
Frothing up some milk.
Next we'll brew some coffee with the second VUE pack.
A yummy vanilla latte is the result.
We think the Vanilla Latte is a bit sweet for our tastes, but if you're looking for such a café drink at home, then for the price of 2 VUE cups you have one. And what is that price roughly? VUE Cups will cost you about $.75 a piece, so each café style drink is going to set you back $1.50 – a bit cheaper than going to your favorite coffee shop and for some coffee shops almost ½ the cost.
Other Drinks with the VUE Brewing System
The Keurig Vue V700 Single Cup Brewing System can also make tea, cocoa, iced tea, and iced coffee drinks. We tried out the Perfect Iced Tea and also the cocoa VUE Cups and the results of both beverages was excellent. We don’t' often drink these styles of drinks, but we are looking forward to iced coffees and teas this summer if they're going to be this good.
The tea VUE pack that came with the VUE brewer was Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime. We tried it out in the evening close to bedtime (the time we normally have mint tea), and thought the brew strength and flavor was good. We do know of some of our friends at Single Serve Coffee who use the K-Cup teas exclusively. We're not sure if we're ready for the move, but if the tea is this good perhaps it's also time to make the switch.
How do I recycle the VUE Packs for the VUE brewing sytem?
It's really easy. The top of the VUE pack has a foil top you peel back and then recycle the VUE cup. We would recommend a countertop trash can to put the used filter and foil, and then put the used VUE pack cup into your recycling provided they take #5 plastic.

Design of the Keurig VUE Brewing System
The Keurig VUE brewer design is a little different than Keurig brewers of the past. Here's our take on the new design elements:
The brew handle is wider and easier to grab and lift
The overall lines of the brewer make it feel more compact even though the brewer is a bit bigger than other Keurig brewers
The water reservoir is large and has a really neat pop up in the front to fill water into instead of taking off the entire top of the water reservoir.
The lighting in the tank and on the brew button is really well done.
We love the LCD screen. It's bright has easy to read messages, and the options on the screen for brewing are straight forward
The power button is also on the top of the brewer, so no more reaching around to the side or in the back
Settings on the brewer are the easiest setting we've used for time and temperature. We wish our alarm clock had the same design to set the time.
A friendly LCD screen gives you some directions.
The water reservoir has LED lighting, and holds 74 oz.
Brewing a cup of coffee is done by hitting the brew button, and the LCD
screen has options for stronger coffee and cup size.
You can set the VUE brewer's brew temperature up to 197F.
The VUE brewer will also take a larger travel mug, and
there are VUE packs designed to make travel mug sized cups of coffee.
We got the carousel along with the brewer. The pair
look great together on our countertops.
The water reservoir can be removed and it has a cool
pop up on the front to fill it with water.
Our only complaint is the brewer feels a little more plastic than we would like. The brew head and lifting it feels just a bit lighter than we would expect, but over the past few days we've gotten more used to how light it feels. We are more used to how heavy the brew head opening and closing feels on our Breville K-Cup brewer.
What varieties of VUE Packs are available and will be available?
Vue packs debuted with more than 30 varieties representing a mix of brands and taste profiles including Green Mountain Coffee, Barista Prima, Tully’s, Coffee People, Gloria Jean’s, Green Mountain Naturals, Café Escapes, Caribou Coffee, Celestial Seasonings, Emeril’s, Newman’s Own Organics, Timothy’s and Van Houtte. Also exclusive to Vue is GMCR’s newest beverage innovation, two-step Barista Prima Café beverages.
The barista blends from GMCR are excellent for stronger
cups of coffee.
In addition, GMCR and The J.M. Smucker Company have reached an agreement to include the Folger’s Gourmet Selections and Millstone brands as part of the Vue system. GMCR expects to offer up to 50 Vue pack varieties by the end of June.
There is no word on Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts VUE packs in the short term, but we expect them to be on the VUE platform in the Fall.
Conclusions on the VUE Brewer and VUE Brewing System
Keurig has hit a home run with the Keurig Vue V700 Single Cup Brewing System and Keurig Vue Packs. They addressed every complaint the earlier K-Cup brewers had, and then delivered a bit more than asked for. The entire design and appeal of the brewer feels modern, and the beverages from coffee to tea to lattes produced are all café quality.
We are a bit sensitive to the price at $249 for the Keurig Vue V700 Single Cup Brewing System, and $.62-$.75 for each VUE cup, but then again you can also still purchase a K-Cup brewing system at $100 less, and get K-Cups in the $.55 range.
We do however expect to pay more for more drinks, more options when brewing, and also a modern LCD touch screen design. We think the footprint of the Keurig VUE V700 brewer is also in range with other Keurig brewers, and we feel the brewer looks amazing on our Single Serve Coffee kitchen countertops.
And the last thing that has us really excited is being able to recycle the VUE cups. Sure you can't recycle the entire VUE Cup, but being able to recycle the plastic portion, and then compost the grounds from the foil lid and filter is more than other brewing systems we know.
We think if you're looking to get into a single serve coffee system with lots of other hot beverage options – picking up a VUE brewer will not disappoint.
We would like to note we purchased the VUE brewer, VUE packs, and VUE Pack carousel ourselves for the purpose of this review.
