What To Do with Your Old Drip Brew Coffee Maker

Your Coffee Maker Can Steam Poach and Grill

Morgan Walker/ NPR

Over at IO9 they’ve created quite an article from an NPR inspired piece on what to do with that old brew coffee maker we know you aren’t using. Sure single serve coffee makers soon will be able to make Cambell’s soup, but if you have an old drip brew coffee maker with a hot plate you can steam, poach, and grill food with it. Yes - yes you can.
  •  Steam: The basket at the top is a great place to steam vegetables. You can throw in broccoli, cauliflower or any vegetable that cooks in about the same time as those.
  • Poach: The carafe at the bottom serves as a simple vessel for poaching fish and chicken. You can also use it to hard-boil eggs or make couscous and oatmeal.
  • Grill: This technique is a bit more advanced — and time-consuming. But if you're really itching for a grilled cheese sandwich or a cinnamon bun in a motel room, the coffee maker's burner can serve as a miniature grill.

NPR has a full article on how to create various recipes including poached salmon. Make sure if you do continue to use your coffee maker for coffee that a salmon is not being poached. Poached salmon coffee anyone?
