Starbucks Adding Single Serve Soda to Its Mix
Starbucks is adding single serve soda to it's cold beverage menu in over 3000 US stores. Starbucks will begin to sell three sodas this week--Spiced Root Beer, Golden Ginger Ale and Lemon Ale--in 16 states mostly located in the South and Southwest to start. The sodas are made by the retailer's baristas using a machine called Fizzio, which carbonates the sodas but can also add carbonation to ice teas and other drinks. It takes just a few minutes to make a single serve soda using the Fizzio.
Cold beverages are big business, and they can boost in store sales throughout the day. Starbucks sells more than 1/3 of the coffee by the cup in the United States and adding lucrative single serve soda sales won't hurt. Starbucks customers have been asking for soda for quite some time, and with Fizzio now able to make single serve soda drinks Starbucks customers will be answered.
Starbucks began testing various flavors across about 100 stores in Atlanta and Austin about a year ago. The sodas contain no artificial flavors, as well as no preservatives or high fructose corn syrup. You're also going to pay around $3 for a grande sized beverage. Also the ingredients of the sodas are all natural - cinnamon, ginger, lemon juice and brown sugar are a few of the ingredients.
And the calories are also less - a 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola has 140 calories, and a 16-ounce serving of Starbucks' sodas has 100 calories or less.
We can imagine the success of the Fizzio in Starbucks cafes may lead to in a consumer version of the Fizzio machine. With Keurig Cold coming with single serve sodas from Coca Cola, Starbucks is poised to be ahead of Green Mountain in the soda market.
