Special Reserve Nespresso Maragogype Grand Cru 2014

Nespresso is at it again with a Special Reserve Maragogype Grand Cru for 2014. Following the success of Hawaii Kona Special Reserve 2012, Nespresso coffee experts have created a Special Reserve Maragogype Grand Cru 2014, composed of extremely rare and immensely precious coffee variety with uncommonly large coffee beans from Central and South America.

‘With Maragogype we have proudly outdone ourselves again,’ said Karsten Ranitzsch, Head of Coffee Nestlé Nespresso SA. ‘Thanks to our longstanding relationships with coffee smallholders, we could source the best Maragogype beans from four distinct origins. We have carefully blended and roasted them to highlight the specificities of their terroir. Due to the scarcity of these precious beans we can only produce a very limited amount, but it is our a privilege to offer this unique sensory experience to connoisseur Club Members who enjoy trying new and rare varieties.’

The Maragogype derives its name from a town in Brazil of the same name where the plant was first discovered in the late 19th century. The unusually large coffee plant, often twice the size of regular coffee plants, has the largest known coffee beans in the world.

Nespresso will present Club Members and coffee connoisseurs with a truly unique Special Reserve Grand Cru. Nespresso coffee experts brought together the best Maragogype beans from coffee smallholders in four different countries: Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Colombia.

Maragogype Special Reserve 2014 comes packaged in a premium silver aluminium capsule with gold highlights and is available in single sleeves or as a gift set. The Special Reserve 2014 gift box includes one sleeve of Maragogype, two tasting glasses for Mild Espresso Grands Crus and a tasting guide inviting coffee connoisseurs to indulge all their senses in an exclusive coffee ritual.

The Special Reserve Maragogype Grand Cru will be available for a limited period from end of October, 2014, and work in any Nespresso Espresso maker.

We expect the coffee to go on sale this week across the US and Canada and hopefully worldwide by the end of the week. Get yours while you can.

UPDATE:

Maragogype sleeves are listed on Nespresso.ca now. As with the Kona in 2012, these are NOT cheap. Pricing is $20 per sleeve.

Annoyingly though, the only way you can order individual sleeves is by placing your order by phone. If you try doing it yourself online, the site will still prompt you to pick 5 sleeves minimum which would total to a whopping $100. Save yourself some cash... if all you want to do is try this out, call by phone and order only 1 sleeve for $20.

As for the Riedel glasses... there's 2 types. One for low intensity Grand Crus (up to level 6) and one for high intensity (level 7 & above). Pricing in Canada is considerably inflated as one set of 2 identical glasses will cost you $50 CAD.

The gift set in the press announcement doesn't save you anything... it's $70 CAD ($50 for 2 low intensity glasses + $20 for 1 sleeve of Maragogype)

From a quick call to Nespresso.ca's Customer Support line after noticing nothing listed on Canadian site & receiving an invitation by mail on Friday:

"We don't know why the Maragogype products aren't showing up on our site yet. We don't even have them listed on our own systems. We suggest checking again after 10:00am PST to see if the site gets updated. Unless there was a glitch in the system, invitations should not have been sent out if the product isn't available yet, so we suspect things may get updated later this morning".
