Numi Moroccan Mint Tea Real Cups Review
While we weren’t aware of the Numi brand before this review, we were a bit surprised to see how much popularity it had apparently gained in certain parts of USA & Canada over the past several years without our knowledge. It seems almost every week we’re hearing of a new brand making its way to the single serve world in one form or another, so we set about trying to find more info about the brand itself and these new Real Cups. While we couldn’t find much mention of the Real Cups except for this press release from early last year (the company’s own website makes no mention of them at all), we did find out that Numi got its start in Oakland California back in 1999 when brother (Ahmed Rahim) & sister (Reem Rahim) decided to start up their own tea company after noticing little difference in consistency & selection within competing tea brands already on the market.
Ahmed had already owned & operated tea houses abroad while Reem had been studying art in Northern California. They wanted to create a company that would encompass both their passions and so Numi Organic Tea was born. The hallmark of the company has since become known as super-premium, organic and Fair Trade Certified teas and herbal teas made with 100% real ingredients. They also make a point to ensure no natural flavorings or perfumes are used to flavor the teas… all the flavor comes from the natural ingredients themselves, nothing else.
While we take it that these Real Cups are relatively new to market, we decided to stick to flavors we knew well in order to compare how Numi’s version turned out when faced against other brands we’ve been using in the past. Numi is trying to set itself apart from competitors by using only natural ingredients… no flavorings or additives at all, so lets have at it and see if this approach makes for a better overall cup of tea or if we’ll be left wishing for something more.
Brewing these Real Cups resulted in fresh vibrant minty aromas tinged with sweet spearmint & earthy notes underneath. Flavor was comprised of natural spearmint with some mild sweet notes throughout. So far, this was pretty similar to most mint teas we’ve tried before, however, you could tell the sweetness was coming from the natural sweetness in the mint leaves themselves as other brands seemed artificially sweetened to the point where the taste was almost candy in nature… not so this time around. If you’ve ever tasted actual mint leaves or muddled some into a mojito, that’s the kind of natural mint taste which was present here.
Acidity was very light at most and the only thing we noticed was some of the mild astringent finish from the mint itself. Body yielded vibrant golden yellows tinged with slight greenish notes and was much on par with the colors found in traditionally prepared Moroccan mint tea. Mouth feel was smooth and refreshing with a very mild cooling effect coming from the mint leaves while finish, as noted above, was lightly astringent near the end with some mild lingering mint notes in the aftertaste.
- Aroma – 8 – Fresh vibrant minty aromas tinged with sweet spearmint & mild earthy notes underneath make for a refreshing change of pace from most teas.
- Acidity – 9 – Very light to the point where the only thing noticeable is the mild astringency on the finish. This helps the main flavor notes push forward without being impeded at all.
- Body – 9 – Vibrant golden yellows tinged with slight greenish shades when held in front of a light source. Very much akin to what you’d find in traditionally prepared Moroccan mint tea.
- Flavor – 8 – Some light spearmint flavors reveal themselves to be mildly sweet in nature. Some may complain the taste is too light, but given the fact that nothing artificial was used here, we think it’s still decent enough to achieve the desired effects.
- Mouth Feel – 10 – Smooth and refreshing with a very mild cooling effect from the mint leaves while finish was mildly astringent with some mild lingering mint notes in the aftertaste.
- Coffee Drinker – While this is obviously NOT coffee, it’s best suited for herbal tea drinkers who are looking for a refreshing, warming cup of tea any time of day and if you’re a mint fan, you’re going to likely enjoy what’s offered here.
Overall Rating: 94 – Exceptional
When we consider the fact that the ingredients here are 100% natural and there’s nothing artificial added whatsoever, it’s no surprise that the taste of this tea would be a little bit lighter than its competitors. That’s not what left us impressed… it’s the fact that the mint flavor and sweetness was able to be achieved so similarly WITHOUT needing anything extra. Most of what we’ve seen in the past either added extra artificial mint flavors or extra artificial sweeteners to achieve a similar kind of taste we got from these Numi Real Cups.
We’re sure some of you will gripe that the flavor is too light or that the taste isn’t sweet enough, but to be honest, you shouldn’t go into this expecting the tea to taste like a pack of DoubleMint gum. We appreciate the fact that the company uses organic ingredients which are sourced from Fair Trade Certified locations as this helps ensure the supplier gets treated fairly and that we’re getting some of the best quality ingredients we can when it comes to brewing a cup. We also like that these Real Cups are of the new peel-to-recycle variety. Mother Parker’s noted they’d eventually convert their entire Real Cup line-up to this format, so it’s nice to see they’ve already started with these new products (perhaps the folks at KGM should take notice?).
The bottom line is that if you enjoy living an organic lifestyle and are looking for all natural food items without anything added, these Real Cups would make a nice addition to your single serve routine and should at least merit a try if you’re so inclined. So grab a cup, sit back & get a taste of Moroccan tradition in your own home (minus the pricy plane ticket).
Numi Moroccan Mint Tea Real Cups work in all K-Cup Brewers BUT NOT Keurig 2.0 and are available via ECSCoffee.com in Canada. These Real Cups are also available via Amazon.com in USA. Please also note that Real Cups will NOT work without using adapters in Keurig Vue brewers.
