Twinings Pumpkin Spice Chai K-Cups Review

PSChai KCup

Ah, Fall... that time of year where everything edible bows down to our pumpkin overlords as stores and coffee shops quickly fill with everything from pumpkin spice lattes to pumpkin cream muffins and just about every form of pumpkin-flavored drink/food you could imagine in between. We're half expecting Burger King to come out with pumpkin spice hotdogs soon given their weird current obsession with everything Cheetos. One thing we weren't expecting, however, was the fusion of pumpkin spice with another popular flavor... chai. Today we check out the brilliant British combination which has resulted in Twinings Pumpkin Spice Chai K-Cups.

Brewing these K-Cups result in a rather odd aroma that almost smelled like a cider (Gasp! Hey GMCR, Pumpkin Spice Cider. Y'all get on it, for reals... do it NOW). You could definitely tell there was the typical pumpkin spices of nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves but the chai notes seemed buried underneath as we only got the faintest note of cardamon but damn... no kidding, this seriously smells like an apple cider! Checking the box now... hmm... nope, no apple ingredients.

Being comprised of flavored black tea, you get a glaringly obvious notion that this is definitely not a cider upon first sip. The first thing to punch your tastebuds into oblivion is shockingly strong cinnamon and clove flavor up front followed by cardamom and star anise notes in the background. The black tea flavor makes itself known once the mild burning sensation of the spices wears off and you manage to catch your breath.

We don't normally add creamers to our coffees or teas, but given how overpowering the spices were this time around, we made an exception. Adding some 2% creamer quickly subdued the fiery chai notes and helped the pumpkin spices calm down into a much more pleasing experience. Things were taking on the allure of a typical chai latte and seemed more on-par with what we've been accustomed to in the past. As for the fusion of pumpkin spice & chai, we think it works rather well and the spices seem to complement themselves to create a rather unique drink. If you've ever wanted a pumpkin spice latte and a chai latte in one cup, look no further.

So, what do we think? Is this one worth checking out?

FINAL VERDICT: Worth it! (but only with the addition of creamer!)

We would like to note that we found the Twinings Pumpkin Spice Chai K-Cups at a local Bed Bath & Beyond and purchased them on our own for the purpose of this review. Twinings Pumpkin Spice Chai K-Cups will work in all K-Cup Brewers including Keurig 2.0.

We would also like to thank our Single Serve Coffee correspondent SH for writing this review.
