Archer Farms Pecan Pie RealCups Review

PecanPie RealCup

We finish off our review series of Target’s limited edition single serve coffee flavors today by checking out their Archer Farms Pecan Pie RealCups. While not as inspired as their 2 previous limited edition flavors, Archer Farms are facing more competition with this flavor as just about every major coffee company on the market has come out with their own version of a southern pecan or pecan pie coffee in the past. How does this version hold up compared to those versions? Let’s find out.

Upon brewing, we get a nicely complex mix of aromas that kick off with strong notes of pecans up front blended with scents of caramelized brown sugar, hints of cinnamon and a faint butterscotch tinge hiding in the background which becomes a bit more pronounced as the coffee cools off in the cup. It made for an overall sweet & inviting aroma. Pretty spot-on so far. Flavor yielded more strong notes of pecans in the foreground mixed with some buttery notes in the background.

Given the sweet aromas, the taste turned out not to be as sweet as we were expecting and instead gave way to the mild smoky notes of the light roast coffee itself. We understand how some may think the taste is too artificial/strong while others may find it’s too weak, but we thought it was surprisingly balanced. You still got the smoky notes of the coffee base while getting the namesake flavor notes layered on top. Impressive given that this is a store-brand after all, albeit one known for its quality.

PecanPie Packaging

Overall, this goes to show that sometimes it pays to stick with basics rather than go all-out and try crazy new concoctions since out of the 3 limited edition flavors we’ve tried so far, this one is by far our favorite of the bunch and the one which doesn’t taste overly chemical and doesn’t lack the namesake flavors advertised on the packaging. Given the complete train wrecks we’ve seen from other store brands in the past (we’re still having nightmares about Wal-Mart’s Our Finest T-Discs for the now all but defunct Tassimo system). Thankfully, Target has learned from other stores’ mistakes and have managed to create a store-brand which is actually worth trying. The tricky part now is finding a store that still has this flavor in-stock.

So, what do we think? Is this one worth checking out?

FINAL VERDICT:  Worth it!

We would like to note that we found these RealCups at a local Target and purchased them on our own for the purpose of this review. These RealCups will work in all K-Cup Brewers including Keurig 2.0.

We would also like to thank our Single Serve Coffee correspondent SH for writing this review.
