Pods, packets taking Joe in new direction

55 Side Noback-1-1

The Chicago Tribune has an excellent overview of the state of the pod. We love these newspaper articles as they are always so - well - chuck full of recaps we've been doing daily for the past 1.5 years. It's hard to believe so many people are still unaware of the convenience and great coffee single serve coffee can bring them daily - but we'll take more converts any time.

Phil Timberman believes his single-serve coffeemaker is the greatest improvement in brewing since the percolator was invented in 1865. "No more trying to figure out how many beans to grind or measure out. Pop in a pod, hit a button and get a great cup of Joe," the coffee lover said. Rolled out last year, the first generation of single-serve machines makes little more than coffee. The next-generation machines, which are being introduced in time for the holiday season, do a bit more. They claim to make coffee-shop-quality coffee, lattes, cappuccino, hot chocolate and tea. And some of the nation's biggest food and candy companies, including Kraft Foods Inc., Sara Lee Corp., Mars Inc. and Procter & Gamble Co. are staking millions in marketing dollars on a product they hope could emulate the success of bottled water.

Review: simplehuman Single Cup Pod Brewer

Review from Single Serve Coffee.com - Coffee Pod ReviewsP-Coffee-Pod-BrewerIt's nice to see a new company in the single serve coffee game. It's really nice to see a company that has both amazing design and function to every kitchen item they've designed. It's also really really nice to see that company have it's first appliance as a single serve coffee brewer.

If you go to any major department store, kitchen store, or place that has housewares you'll see simplehuman's amazing stainless steel trash cans, containers, dish racks, and other extremely well designed products. We've been reviewing several of their products at Kitchen Contraptions and have found them all to be quite excellent.

We have been using the simplehuman single cup pod brewer over the past two weeks and are quite impressed. The brewer is very compact and also has a striking design. We think the overall impression of the simplehuman single cup pod brewer has been one of quality. Read on to get our moment of truth impressions and our run down and sampling of the coffees.

simplehuman Single Serve Pod Brewer Arrives for Review

Img 1659

The new simplehuman pod brewer has arrived for review. We can tell you right now - the pod brewer looks pretty amazing in the single serve testing kitchen, and we are really impressed with the coffee and the packaging. YES - THE PACKAGING. If you've opened an iPod and had the experience of how amazing the packaging of a product can be, then this is simply the same experience in single serve coffee. We'll be testing this over the holidays with all the relatives to get their perspective on what they think of the simplehuman pod brewer.

The new simplehuman brewer features a 42 oz. water tank, brews 5 oz or 8 oz cups of coffee, and fits all standard-size pods (we're thinking 62 mm - Senseo sized pods). The simplehuman single cup pod brewer also comes with two pod holders - one for coffee and one for tea. The brewer is priced at $129.99 and FREE shipping is included.

NBC's 'The Apprentice: Martha Stewart' Features Tassimo

It's nice to see another year and some more product placement of single serve coffee machines. Melitta One:One LilyPod Microwave Brew Mug Arrives for Review

Img 1649Img 1651What's better than single serve coffee? Well - single serve microwave coffee! We're not totally sure on that just yet, but the new LiliPod Microwave Coffee Pod Brew Mug has arrived - actually two of them.

We purchased both the red and the blue one just because we have to have them. We never thought that after a year we'd have a microwave single serve coffee mug and it's well - exciting. The LilyPod Microwave Brew Mug supposedly brews up a nice cup of joe in 3 minutes or so and that means less mess and whatever flavor pod you'd like to throw into it. Nice. We'll have a full review in the next week or so. And - YES - it says you can make espresso and cappuccino in it. We'll be the judge of that.

Review: Senseo Forbidden Fruit Raving Reds Coffee Pods

Review from Single Serve Coffee.com - Coffee Pod ReviewsImg 1633

Only available in Europe, we received these new Senseo Coffee pods with a fruit twist just last week. We sat down with the coffees over the weekend and decided to focus solely on Raving Reds Sunday morning.

The Senseo Forbidden Fruit Raving Reds comes packed in a bag of 10. Each pod weighs in at 7.5 grams (most likely 7 grams for the coffee and .5 grams for the filter paper). Upon opening the Raving Reds you get the strong smell of something very fruity, very red, and well - very cherry cough syrup.

Review: Green Mountain Fair Trade Gingerbread K-Cups

Review from Single Serve Coffee.com - Coffee Pod ReviewsImg 1611We can clearly remember the first time we laid eyes on a gingerbread house. We can also clearly remember the first time we got to build a gingerbread house with our grandparents and taste the gingerbread, gumdrops, and icing as we built the gingerbread house. Drinking a cup of Gingerbread coffee from these new flavored K-Cups will bring all the memories like these rushing back.
Images-7We fired up our new Keurig Elite Edition B60 and sat back with a cup of Gingerbread coffee. We used the medium setting on the Keurig B60 and also tried the new Gingerbread coffee with a generous helping of creme and sugar.

When testing any new coffee, we like to benchmark it against other coffees we've tried. The entire Single Serve Coffee team has really been enjoying the Hazelnut Creme and the Mocha Nut Fudge K-Cups as well and hoped the Gingerbread would hold up.

Frothing Milk and Single Serve Coffee

Latte_art_ssc.jpg

Currently most single serve coffee machines simply do not have a milk frother and this has resulted in a variety of "other methods" to get our whipped milk when using the Senseo, Bunn My Cafe, Krups Home Cafe, and simplehuman single serve coffee pod brewers. We currently have 3 options for you when trying to get your hot frothed or steamed milk to make cappuccinos and lattes with your single serve coffee machines.

One easy way if you simply want hot milk is to take a 1 oz shot of skim milk and microwave it for 30 seconds or less. This makes the milk hot and yummy and also ensures you don't immediately cool down your cup of single serve coffee. We use a shot glass or the pyrex glasses we ordered from Nespresso (review underway of the Nespresso club - coming shortly).

If you want to froth and have hot milk, you'll need to microwave or heat up on the stove a bit more milk and use the Turbo-Froth Frother. We've found this device to be the best at helping us make a cappuccino or latte with a our single serve coffee or shots of Nespresso.

B00005A452.01. Sclzzzzzzz Another option is the Capresso frothXpress PLUS System. This stand alone milk frother for just under $70 can make frothed milk like no other. Completely automatic, the new Capresso frother features a sturdy pump and powerful stainless steel thermoblock that produces enough hot steam to froth up to 30-oz. of milk in seconds-that's enough cappuccinos or lattes for you and some friends! The milk temperature can be adjusted from 120 to 170 degrees F, while an indicator light lets you know when it's ready.

We hope these three options get you into a latte this morning! We're going to see what we can whip up ourselves.

New Melitta One:One Microwaveable Coffee Pod Mug Brewer

P569P568Now we're talking. Everyone here at Single Serve Coffee was wondering when someone would figure you might be able to brew up a single serve cup of coffee using a single mug. It looks like Melitta has figured it out with their new Melitta One:One Microwaveable Coffee Pod Mug Brewer. The mugs come in both red and blue and will make coffee, espresso (can it really make espresso?), and tea by inserting a pod into the mug and microwaving for 2-3 minutes. Burn Recycled Coffee Grounds in Your Fireplace with Java Logs

1342Xlarge Grjavalog Logo We can't think of a better way to spend the evening than a great cup of single serve coffee and throwing another Java Log on the fire. Made of recycled coffee grounds and declared one of the “Coolest Inventions of the Year” by Time Magazine. We have been seeing these quite a bit and just had to share the Java Log with our Single Serve Coffee readers.

The Java-Log is the world’s first and only fire-log made from recycled coffee grounds. Throw a Java-Log into the fire place and then sit back, relax, and enjoy up to 3 hours of long lasting beautiful flames that emit more heat, a slightly sweet aroma but no coffee aroma, no chemical smell, and less carbon dioxide than traditional fires.

  • Comes in a Case of 6 Logs.
  • Better/Brighter Flames: More natural flame throughout the burning cycle.
  • Better Scent: No chemical scent as with manufactured logs and a mild sweet aroma.
  • Better for the Chimney: Less than 50% soot build-up than other manufactured logs.
  • Better for the Environment: Less 14% C02 emission than other manufactured logs.
  • More for the Environment: Reusing coffee grounds reduces waste in landfills.
  • Easy to Light: One match will do by lighting the packaging.
  • Burns-up to 3 Hrs: The same amount of time as other manufactured logs

Black & Decker Black Home Cafe Generation 2 at Amazon.com

B000Bhihkc.01-A1Vc38T7Yxb528.Lzzzzzzz It's a Home Cafe morning here at Single Serve Coffee.com. We didn't expect to have both the Mr. Coffee and the Black & Decker Home Cafe updates in one day but well - here they are. The new Black & Decker Home Cafe Generation 2 is a bit more compact and features a total redesign. That's all we really know. We did venture out to Target as well to see this in person and they didn't have anything but the machine with a missing water tank and none in stock. Also the Home Cafe web site has not been updated with information on the new Home Cafe.

We can only hope the quality of the machine has been improved. The first generation model didn't pass the Single Serve Coffee review process with flying colors and several threads and posts continued to point out the quality concerns of this single serve coffee brewer. We will be receiving one of these to review in the coming weeks and will have full review of the new Black & Decker Home Cafe.

Agitate Your Coffee

Agitor-790866 We often find a certain level of coffee agitation to help our single serve coffee but to have it built into your coffee cup - brilliant. The Agitator is a unique stirring system, which allows on-the-go commuters to stir and drink coffee, tea and other beverages without delays or spillage, is now being marketed in Europe and the United States.

Developed by innovation specialists Tinkatec, the cost-effective Agitor stirring system also has wide-ranging benefits for vendors, eliminating inefficient queues of customers waiting to add milk, sugar and other condiments to their drinks, saving storage space, and lowering customer turnaround times.

"The system can be economically produced for drinking vessels ranging from disposable paper or plastic cups to commuter mugs. The convenience of being able to collect your drink and leave the shop immediately, without waiting to stir in milk and sugar, must be obvious in today hurried world. The safety and hygiene of stirring a sealed cup are added benefits."

Nespresso Romeo Now Available at Amazon.com

We reviewed the Nespresso Romeo earlier this year and the great coffee and espresso it produced simply amazed us. Finally you can purchase the Nespresso Romeo from Amazon.com. Though the Nespresso Romeo costs $799 - we really enjoyed it and thought if you had the money - you couldn't get much better in the Nespresso world than the Romeo. We also recently reviewed the much cheaper "Nano of Espresso Machines" the Nespresso C90 Essenza. We found both machines made great espresso and either would be a great choice. The C90 however is priced at a more reasonable $179.99 but doesn't have the bells and whistles the Nespresso Romeo does.

Wendy from Typical Dutch Stuff sent us in the entire set of Padinies Coffee Pods (they call them pads in Europe). Padinies coffee pods are only available in Europe, but we are always excited to review coffee pods from across the ocean because the coffee flavors are often so different.

Padinies touts itself as "The Universal Coffee" and we are wondering how universal these coffee pods really are. We did find they fit in all the US single serve coffee brewers that take a 62 mm coffee pod and we also found the coffee to be good.

We decided on the Mocca Mountain coffee pods because they had the most un-universal coffee smell of any of the pods. They have an almost hypnotic chicory like aroma when you open the bag.

Currently Padinies has the following coffee pod flavors available:

  • Mocca Mountain
  • Arabica Classic
  • Caffe Lacchino
  • Rooibos Vanille (tea pod)
  • French Roast
  • French Vanilla
  • Arabica Light Classic

Single Serve Tea Anyone?

Abi1 Single serve tea anyone? ;-) We know you can make single serve tea with your Tassimo and Keurig single serve coffee brewers but you can't make loose leaf tea. Making tea with loose leaf tea is just as much as a pain as making a pot of regular old grind and brew coffee. It looks like Affinitea brewing technologies has created a simple and easy way to create hand crafted loose-leaf tea single serve beverages with their new Affinitea (think infinity) tea machine.

"Affinitea announces its entry into the home tea brewer market. Affinitea is a company whose revolutionary and proprietary AP (Agitation and Pressure) Infusion Process enables consumers with the ability to create hand crafted loose-leaf tea or herbal beverages within 30-50 seconds. The patented combination of pressure and agitation makes the modification of the tealeaf unnecessary. While Tassimo, Melitta, Keurig and Falvia depend on coffee technology to brew tea, Affinitea took the opposite approach and developed a process just for large leaf tea and herbs. Any tea lover that has ever witnessed majesty of an unfolding tealeaf knows it just isn’t right to put this beautifully organic plant in a bag or a pod. How would it unfold in the pod? Why can’t I just see the leaves?"
