Best of Single Serve Coffee 2005 - Part II

Bestof2005What a year 2005 has been for Single Serve The shear amount of new single serve coffee products introduced in the past 12 months has been nothing short of jaw dropping. We've seen more coffee pod brewers, more coffee pods, more Keurig brewers, more Nespresso machines, more k-cup flavors - well just more of everything.

In the past year we can count up to 15 different single serve coffee machines that were brand new or getting a refresh including: Senseo Shorter Spout Edition, Mr. Coffee Home Cafe, Bunn My Cafe, Krups Home Cafe, Black & Decker Home Cafe, simplehuman Pod Brewer, too many Nespresso models to count, Tassimo, Gourmet Coffee Cafe (terrible coffee), Francis Francis! (ESE Pod), the Keurig B60 and B40, and others.

2005 was also the year of the single serve coffee pod brewer getting really nice big juicy pods - like the 12 gram Baronet Monster pods. We've also seen most coffee pod etailers move to a large 9.5-11 gram coffee pod which ensures a rich cup of single serve coffee.

On the K-Cup front, we saw the introduction of the larger extra-bold K-Cups - like the WiWili from Timothy's and the Sumatran Extra Dark from Green Mountain. These k-cups really have that extra 25% of coffee needed for a really nice dark cup of coffee. We love the extra bold/extra dark k-cups - they're simply some of our favorite coffees.

Here's our picks for the best of Single Serve 2005!

It's Coffee Table Friday Kirei Mod Style!

We love coffee tables and most of all we love Coffee Table Friday! We found this stunning coffee table over at GotoReviews and think you'll love it as much as we do. This coffee table is a bit expensive ($1100) but it's very ecologically sound.

This coffee table is made out of Kirei board, which is a material made out of the recycled stalks of the Sorghum plant. Usually these stalks are thrown away after the Sorghum cereal is harvested, but in this case, they are reclaimed, and then bonded into a sheet using formaldehyde-free adhesives.

Holiday Flavored Coffee Guide

Images-3-4We've been enjoying many of the Holiday Flavored Coffees over the past few weeks and thought we'd share where to get them and for what coffee machines you'll need to brew them in. We've brokedn them into Coffee Pod based Holiday Coffees and K-Cup based Holiday Coffees.

Images-1-4Coffee Pod Based Holiday Coffees - will work in your Senseo, Bunn My Cafe, and other one cup coffee pod machines.

Cool Beans Pods

  • Gingerbread Cookie - we have really been enoying this along with the Chestnut. So far we think it's as close ae your going to get in the coffee pod world to Green Mountain's Gingerbread K-Cups
  • Toasted Chestnut - it's a bit darker than you'd expect but with a little cream and sugar the flavor pops right up. Very good for a mid-morning cup of coffee.

• Kahlua Cheme - we've had this a few times and have to say - yummy.

Baronet Coffee Pods

  • Cinnamon Stick Pods - instead of adding a litle sprinkle of cinnamon to your coffee how about just brewing up a single serve coffee cup of this! We love these pods.
  • Egg Nog Pods
  • Gingerbread Pods - once again - rich and interesting and along with the Gingerbread K-Cups - simply one of the best we've had this holiday

Images-2-5Keurig K-Cup Based Holiday Coffees - you'll need a Keurig B40, B50, B60 or B100 brewer to brew coffee using K-Cups

Green Mountain Coffee

  • Fair Trade Holiday Blend (A Single Serve Favorite)
  • Fair Trade Gingerbread - we reviewed this earlier in the season and love it. Very tasty and great with a little cinnamon thrown in.

Other Places to Get Holiday Blends

Online merchants such as and others also have many of the holiday blends in stock.

For unique flavors such as high end Kona coffees, we recommend trying out Aloha Island Coffee. We have always Aloha Island Coffee and we think Aloha Island Coffee makes some of the best Kona Coffee Pods for your one cup coffee pod systems.

Brewing a revolution, one cup at a time

Images-11Further proof the Single Serve Coffee phenomenon is here to stay. We can't but think running production lines 12 hours a day to make K-Cups is a good thing.

A half dozen production lines operate 12 hours a day, cutting small filters and stuffing them into tiny cups, dropping in 2 or 3 grams of coffee and sealing them before whisking them into boxes.

The scores of little coffee containers, known around Green Mountain Coffee Roasters as K-Cups, rolling off the line every few minutes represent what the small specialty brewer hopes will be a revolution in the way Americans brew their favorite roast at home. The diminutive cups are a self-contained coffee brewing system that can be popped into a relatively new brand of coffeemaker to produce a single cup of steaming java. Gone, promoters of the systems say, are the days of a full pot of coffee slowly burning before it's thrown down the sink...

Pavina Double-Walled Coffee Cups

Web Pictlarge 4558-10-1We have really been enjoying these double-walled coffee cups from Bodum over the past few days. Recently we received a set of these glasses as a gift and we're so impressed with the quality, how hot the coffee stays and how amazing the look of the coffee is in the cup, we're going to be using these for our reviews in the future here at Single Serve We'd also like to recommend for anyone considering something elegant and simply wonderful to buy for a coffee drinker - get these. The glasses both astound and delight as you sip your coffee. The coffee seems to be suspended in mid-air.

Bodum's insulated glassware is made from durable Borosilicate glass. Borosilicate glass is a strong heat-resistant glass that weighs less than traditional glassware. Used to make scientific lab glass, borosilicate glass (medical grade glass) is stronger than traditional "soda-lime" glass and can be used for everything from drinkware to cookware. We've put these through several espresso sessions, coffee sessions, and also the dishwasher with no issues.

Single Serve Coffee Contest Winners for the Keurig B60s from Green Mountain Coffee!

B60-Sm-1We've heard from four out of the five winners who will receive a Keurig B60 from Green Mountain Coffee!

Congratulations! The following mailing list members have won a free Keurig B60 from Green Mountain Coffee Roasters:

John Brosnan - Winner #1

I read Single Serve's RSS feed every morning (its in my 'morning coffee' folder :). The reviews, particularly of different coffees, are great -- the reviews go into detail about the coffees, and help a picky coffee drinker (yours truly) find a nice dark roast.

MattM2G from Columbus, OH - Winner #2

When I first started looking for a single-serve coffee brewer, I was doing a considerable amount of research, and stumbled upon Single Serve, and I was hooked!!! I read all of the information on the site, then I joined the very knowledgeable group of people in the forum, and now, along with my daily caffeine fix, I also need my Single Serve fix ;-) !!!!

The information I get from the website is always very straightforward and honest. Jay and his staff do an incredibly thorough job of putting a product through its paces before they post a review!!! I now only need to go to one place for research on this topic!!

I have been debating on which single serve machine I was going to add to my kitchen (I have more than a few coffee-related items in there already). I LOVE the Keurig B-60, but that was not in the budget for this holiday season.....until I got the email saying that I had won a Keurig B-60!!!! Thank you very much for this prize, and keep up the fantastic job at Single Serve

Claire Raymundo - Winner #3

I have a regular 11-cup coffee pot, but since there's only 2 people in the household and both of us drink coffee at different times of the day, we don't really use it. I thought that I'd try a single serve one, so that way, we can each get a cup when we want one. - Thanks again

Dorothy Rosa Durkee - Winner #4

The selection of single-serve coffee available locally is pretty limited, and what there is isn't particularly good (or fresh). Were it not for Single Serve's reviews and recommendations and the availability of specialty coffees on line, we'd probably be drinking vintage freeze-dried instant decaf from a jar in Uncle Ernie's hunting camp pantry -- or the pricey (and pretentious) supermarket equivalent!

A big thanks to Green Mountain for making this possible and giving away such a fabulous set of prizes.

Aerobie® AeroPress Coffee & Espresso Maker Arrives for Review

Img 1768Aero Press 04We're excited to have received the Aerobie® AeroPress(TM) Coffee & Espresso Maker to review. We have been testing it out over the past few weeks and have to say it's very interesting. It's different from other Single Serve Coffee methods as you'll have to revert back to using some ground beans or a package of illy ground espresso coffee, but we think you'll like the results.

From AeroPress:

The AEROPRESS™ is an entirely new way to make coffee.

  • Water and grounds are mixed together for ten seconds.
  • Then gentle air pressure pushes the mix through a micro-filter in 20 seconds.
  • The total brewing time of only 30 seconds results in exceptionally smooth flavor.
  • Tasters ranging from professional cuppers and author Kenneth Davids, to coffee aficionados all praise the smooth, rich flavor.

Kraft Invests $75 million in Tassimo Single-Cup System

1134494936796 20931638We've really been enjoying the Tassimo here at Single Serve It's good news that Kraft Foods is reportedly investing $75 million in Tassimo, the one-cup brewing system it rolled out in the U.S. in September. We're anxious to see how many new flavors and new customers Kraft attracts to the Tassimo over this holiday season.

We're also excited to see many of the T-Discs and other items used for the Tassimo will be produced here in the US. The discs, some of which contain milk, will be made at Kraft's Upper Macungie plant starting early next year. The company is hiring more workers, but has not said how many it will add. The plant will be the first U.S. facility to make the discs.

Nespresso Senang Snowman

Img 1779

It's truly winter when you make your first Nespresso Snowman. We fired up our Essenza C90 and put in a couple of Senang Nespresso Capsules to fuel our snowman making session over this past weekend. We've really been enjoying the Senang blend from the Nespresso Club and we love the bright blue Senang capsule color. And as our Snowman can now attest - the left over capsules make for great Snowman eyes!

From Nespresso:

Visu Sp2005Each variety of coffee that makes up the Senang blend is roasted separately and according to different parameters in order to preserve and release each one of its varieties’ most specific and characteristic notes. This technique, known as "split roasting", makes it possible to obtain subtle and varied notes. It also allows each origin’s potential to be exploited while preserving its character, which could be lost or "crushed" during a combined roasting.

We like the snap and bite of the Senang. The coffee has a nice round finish with hints of many milder coffees but still maintaining a unique flavor. If you have a Nespresso coffee maker we think you'll like the Senang club exclusive. Also if you currently have the Vivalto or Arpeggio Nespresso capsules we think they'll make great snowman eyes as well.

Tips & Tricks: Wet Your Coffee Pod & Heat Your Brewer

Img 1637-1We get questions over email all the time regarding our best tips and tricks for Single Serve Coffee. We have what we think is one of the best tips you can use with coffee pod based brewers like the Senseo, Bunn My Cafe, Krups Home Cafe, and simplehuman single serve coffee pod brewers. - Wet Your Pod Before Brewing.

It's really that simple. If you have an instant hot dispenser or even a little cool water, moistening the pod will improve the overall extraction of the coffee. Some pod brewers like the Grindmaster pre-moisten the coffee pod before brewing, but most don't have this feature.

Another trick is to take the pod holder and simply run hot water over it. This achieves a moist coffee pod when you place the pod in the holder and a better overall extraction due to the seal the wet pod will make over a dry pod.

We also recommend heating up the brewer and running some water through it to heat up the brewing area. In any of the brewers we test, we always run an ample amount of water through the machine prior to making a cup of coffee and we don't just do this for coffee pod based machines - this trick will work for all single serve coffee machines.

Trust us. A moistened pod and a hot brewer will make a much better cup of single serve coffee coffee.

Review: LilyPod Microwavable Single Cup Coffee Pod Mug

Review from Single Serve - Coffee Pod Reviews P569-1We've been testing the LilyPod over the past several weeks and we'll say this right up front - results have been varied. The LilyPod Microwave Brew Mug supposedly brews up a nice cup of joe in 3 minutes or and that means less mess and the convenience of using whatever flavor pod you'd like to throw into it. The big factor here is the microwave.

Img 1651-1We have had less than stunning results with the Single Serve microwave but have had better results at our friends house. Each time we use the Lilypod with the exact directions and try a microwave the results have been different. It's like we're making microwave popcorn and not coffee, but we do believe it makes sense the results are so varied.

If you've ever cooked in a microwave oven anything like popcorn, perhaps a Lean Cuisine, or even poached some eggs - you'll know that finding the right power setting and time to cook is important for YOUR MICROWAVE. We have found this to be the case with the LilyPod. We simply could not find a great setting for our Microwave but did find some decent ones with other less powerful microwave ovens. That being said, the coffee produced each time was not great coffee.

From our winner Bruce about Single Serve

"Wow!!!! I am a consistent coffee drinker, I say consistent because I am not a coffee snob particularly, but love to drink coffee at many times and events. And I like bold flavorful cups of coffee, and it was time to upgrade my home machine. I include de caf in my choices occassionally, and don't need a full pot.. so the single cup route appealed to me. I had been looking all around for ideas about which single cup coffee maker was the best and started talking to one of my work associates, as we were going to get a cup of coffee at a local restaurant. He had just purchased the Keurig and had rave reviews for it and the variety of coffee flavors available for it.

That lead me to your site. I will be looking forward to trying the varieties that you offer and using what is clearly one of the best machines on the market for the cost. Last week I was able to go to several high end stores and tinker with most of the machines available, and Keurig i s the one that appealed to me. Your site gave me the information to really begin looking for a machine. Also the variety of coffee that you give the consumer access to on your site convinced me that once I bought a machine I would be able to have a simple way to get the coffee I wanted. Also your site was the one I went back to each time I was trying to learn more. I signed up for the newsletter to keep the information coming. So...I was just about ready to convince my wife that what I really needed was a Keurig and some various flavors of coffee for Christmas.

And I opened your email that told me I'd won. - Bruce"
