Canadian Tassimo Website Launches

John in the Single Serve Coffee Forums points out:

The Tassimo website changed again today, with Canadian pages in English and French added to the drop down list of countries available. http://www.tassimo.ca/ indicates that the Tassimo system is launching soon in Canada, and the graphics on the page suggest another coffee brand will come in T-Discs, Nabob Crema and Espresso are both featured, along with Maxwell House, Suchard Hot Chocolate, and Twinings Earl Grey. Good news for coffee lovers in the Great White North.

This is great news for folks in Canada looking for a unique hot beverage system. It should be interesting to see how the Tassimo is received in Canada.

Interview with Cesar Vohringer, CTO of Philips - Maker of Senseo

Images-14CesarEngadget has an interesting interview with Cesar Vohringer, CTO of Philips who makes the Senseo single serve coffee maker. It's interesting how good quality consumer electronics equates to good coffee. There's also some interesting tidbits about their new Ambilight TV tech that puts ambient lights behind larger Plasma and LCD TVs for a better picture. How about putting some ambient lighting in my Senseo?

You mentioned one example right now -- the Senseo coffee maker, for instance, is an innovation of putting together available technologiesand making it easy, simple, friendly and of good quality for the consumers. But there’s nothing revolutionaryabout the technology the Senseo uses. You can say the proposition is innovative. Also with the Ambilight TV. It’s again putting togetheravailable technologies but providing the user with a viewing experience which he enjoys. And this came out of a lot ofconsumer research, out of our home lab – we have a home lab here in our Innovation Campus where we portray anumber of these innovative concepts, and we have people living in that for days and experiencing that and giving usfeedback. So I think that over the last few years there has been a lot of effort put in the company to take a usercentric innovation approach and to begin to balance the technology strength of the company with the consumer insight.

Fresh Brew Highwave Coffee Mug Brewer

Freshbrew 001We think we'll chalk the Fresh Brew Highwave Coffee Mug Brewer up to - we'll wait and see. The new and very Melitta pour over coffee system uses paper or cotton filters to make a single cup of coffee.

We can't really see this being very innovative but perhaps it's a bit better than just setting the rig right on top. Has anyone used a cotton coffee filter?

A special thanks to Jenn for sending this in.

Review: Baronet Coffee French Toast Coffee Pods

Review from Single Serve Coffee.com - Coffee Pod Reviews Img 2088We've been testing the New Mr. Coffee Home Cafe machine this week and we've been using the new French Toast coffee pods from Baronet Coffee for our flavored bench mark. We've used these pods in the Senseo, Bunn My Cafe, and Krups Home Cafe as well to find out how good the new Mr. Coffee Home Cafe machine does against a formidable set of single serve coffee machines.

The amazing thing is how consistently the Baronet French Toast coffee pods are across the machines - consistent in making a very yummy - maple syrup induced cup of flavored coffee. We're nothing short of impressed by how the french toast coffee translates to each machine.

First Impressions Mr. Coffee Home Cafe Generation II AT13 Single Serve Coffee Maker

Img 2083B000Co7Asy.01-A23Nlorbgxoleo. Sclzzzzzzz We're currently testing both the Mr. Coffee Home Cafe and the Black & Decker Home Cafe second generation coffee makers. We'll have a full review of both coffee makers next week but we thought we'd give you our first impression on opening, priming, and brewing our first cup of coffee with the new Mr. Coffee Home Cafe AT13 single serve coffee brewer.

Just seeing the box gives you a better first impression of the Mr. Coffee Home Cafe. We were excited to see that throughout opening the coffee maker the Home Cafe feel seemed to permeate throughout the box and included accessories. This version of the Mr. Coffee Home Cafe comes with a set of Folgers coffee pods, Cappuccino coffee pods, and a pod holder from Tupperware for loose pods. The Tupperware pod holder inclusion is a little odd given the Folgers pods are individually wrapped.

We then unwrapped the Mr. Coffee Home Cafe single serve coffee maker and our first impression - much better. Simply - a much better feeling and looking brewer. The buttons right away and the little Home Cafe logo on the side has better presentation and the brewer just feels more solid and designed.

Green Mountain's Extra Bold Sumatran Reserve K-Cup Snowman

Img 2064Img 2065We continue our series of Single Serve Coffee inspired snowmen as we get more and more snowman quality snow. We brewed up a couple of cups of Green Mountain's Extra Bold Sumatran Reserve K-Cups and proceeded to then step outside for a little snowmaking session.

Our last snowman featured two Nespresso Senang capsules for super blue eyes, but we found the new K-Cup treatment to really make the snowman seem to be mesmerized as if in a caffeine induced stupor.

And you can also see - certain staff members were also pretty excited by the new snowman treatment. :-)

Lipton Tea Pods for Home Cafe Arrive for Review

Img 2042We are currently testing both the Mr. Coffee Home Cafe and the Black & Decker Home Cafe second generation products and are excited to try the new Lipton Tea Pods with these machines as well. Many readers write in to inquire about how they can make tea with their Home Cafe, Senseo, Bunn My Cafe, or other single serve coffee pod brewer. It's nice to see a product that is just for coffee pod machines but many readers have found using a tea bag or using loose tea wrapped up in a coffee filter also works quite well in the Senseo and Bunn My Cafe.

We'll keep you posted on how these tea pods fair in testing.

Starbucks Too Expensive? Try Single Serve Coffee

20060122-Pc-I1-0600We would have to agree with many of the points in this article in the Columbus Dispatch. At $1.50-$2.00 a cup, the cost of coffee at Starbucks and other retailers ads up quickly. If you have 1 cup a day for the average work week - you're looking at over $40 bucks a month for a cup a day.

You can cut that down to less than $10 bucks a month if you drink single serve coffee instead, or if you're like the staff here at Single Serve Coffee.com, you'll still hit that $40 mark but drink 4 times the amount of coffee for the $40 bucks you'd spend at Starbucks. We do however frequent our local Starbucks from time to time and enjoy a cup of Pete's, Seattle's Best, and others when we're out shopping from time to time.

"The machines also are designed to appeal to the growing number of people buying coffee from coffee shops. Single-cup machines offer ‘‘a coffeehouse-quality cup of coffee at home with little fuss and less cost," said Dave Manly, marketing vice president for Keurig, which makes three single-cup brewers for home use. ‘

‘We found that a third of our customers are people who would go to Starbucks and other gourmetcoffee shops." A cup of Keurig-brewed coffee costs 56 cents or less — more than traditional home-brews but substantially less than $1.50-to-$4 servings at coffee shops."

Review: Gloria Jean's Black Gold K-Cups

Review from Single Serve Coffee.com - Coffee Pod ReviewsImg 2044Jim Evans from CoffeeWhiz.com was kind enough to send us a sampling of Gloria Jean's K-Cups to review. Gloria Jean's has 12 coffees including flavored, plus origins and blends in both regular and decaffeinated, as well as a selection of 7 teas that can be used in Keurig B-40 Elite, Keurig B50 Gourmet, Keurig B-60 Special Edition brewers.

Img 2045We honestly expected to focus our first review on more of their flavored coffees but Gloria Jean's Black Gold K-Cups took us by surprise. Gloria Jean's Black Gold K-Cups are made from a blend of 3 darker roasts coffee (we really wish we knew what all three roasts were) and it comes off as a more medium dark coffee with a very refined finish. This gem of a coffee is nothing short of smoky, interesting, not too dark, and great tasting until the last sip - hot or cold.

It's Crazy Travel Mug Friday Caffeine Molecule Style!

Caffeine-StainlessWe've been obsessed with travel mugs as of late. Our current arsenal of travel mugs though interesting - doesn't have much attitude. We've looking around the web for a travel mug that screams coffee but doesn't exactly spell it out. But then we found this mug - the Caffeine Molecule Stainless Travel Mug! Now you can remember how wonderful complex coffee is at the molecular level every time you take a sip.

The Caffeine Molecule Stainless Travel Mug features stainless steel, 16 Ounce Capacity, Dual-wall insulation, a Black Drink-Thru lid, and fits in the majority of automobile Drink cup holders! We're just hoping such a mug will fit under most of the single serve coffee machines. We're pretty sure it will fit under the Keurig and Bunn but will it fit under the Senseo - don't think so.

Imus and Tassimo Tie-Up One of The Better Promos Around

Tassimo-1

If you'd like to get a FREE Tassimo looks like all you need to do is be a guest on Imus and at the end of the be the guest he thought was the best of the day. Hmmm...we seriously doubt we'll get on the show and get a FREE Tassimo but maybe someday.

I don't know if Kraft is selling a lot of Tassimo coffeemakers yet, but I will say that the deal they cooked up with syndicated morning DJ Don Imus is one of the more effective deals of its kind I've come across.

Imus gives out a Tassimo to whoever he thinks is the best guest of the day--i.e. CBS's Andy Rooney, NBC's David Gregory, Righty pundit Pat Buchanan, Senator John McCain, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, etc. What's been happening is that as the guests come back on the show, thank Imus for the Tassimo and gush about how much they love it. I have to say, it's valuable chatter about a product.

What Do You Do with Used Coffee Pods?

Img 0052-1.JpgThere's an interesting thread in the forums on what to do with your used coffee pods. Now some of the posts suggest just throwing them away or simply throwing those old nasty pods at kids near your house (you'll have to read the thread). Interesting ideas.

Img 0050-1We like to use ours for fertilizer in house plants and use them in compost during the Summer. A great way to keep a bin of the old coffee pods is to use a coffee pod trash can that sits on your countertops. We received such a can and use it daily. It's really much easier than finding a place to put the used pods or having to use them in a house plant right away. We like to fill up a good half to full can before embarking on a little fertilizer trip.

When composting in the Summer we like to break them open a bit and then toss them in. Sure you may get your hands dirty but you're helping your garden and the environment. We even found a can that would allow you to start your compost in the kitchen and then take to your compost pile at Kitchen Contraptions.

What do you do with your used pods? Sound off in the forums!

New Home Cafe Single Serve Coffee Makers Arrive for Review

Img 2040 Img 2041We've received the new Mr. Coffee Home Cafe and the new Black & Decker Home Cafe to review. We reviewed their earlier releases and weren't as impressed as we were with Senseo and other single serve coffee pod brewers.

The new Black & Decker Home Cafe Generation 2 is a bit more compact and features a total redesign.

It's been over a year since we tested the original Mr. Coffee Home Cafe. We liked this Home Cafe single serve coffee brewer much better than the Black & Decker Home Cafe. The quality of the Mr. Coffee was a little better and we also felt the coffee it produced was a little better as well.

We can only hope the quality of the machines has been improved. The first generation models didn't pass the Single Serve Coffee review process with flying colors and several threads and posts continued to point out the quality concerns of this single serve coffee brewer.

Expect a full review in the coming weeks and we'll add these two brewers into our Big Brew Off article.

New K-Cups coming From Tully's Coffee

Topnav Logo-2We're pretty excited here at Single Serve Coffee.com to see Keurig add another roaster to it's AAA+ list of K-Cup makers. We've visited a Tully's Coffee when we were in Arizona and also in California. Tully's does helm though from Washington State so if you're in the Seattle area - you must check them out.

Tully's coffees are usually very dark rich - interesting coffee's including Kona blends and most of their coffees have an almost smoky feel to them. According to Jim Evans at CoffeeWhiz.com all the Tully's K-Cups will be the extra-bold K-Cups containing 11.5 grams of coffee in each K-Cup.

Full release after the jump.

Use Your Own Coffee with My Pod Refillable Holder for Senseo

B000Biu088.01. Sclzzzzzzz 8494D250Fca02671F0527010.LInterest in using your own coffee with your single serve coffee maker seems to start when you first receive it and when you really want to make a cup of coffee you can't get in pod form yet - like Starbucks or Pete's coffees.

It is It's nice to see Amazon.com finally pick up this refillable holder for Senseo. Unlike the Ecopad which uses a filter basket, this one uses filters. So after 100 uses you're going to need to get more filters to use with the My Pod. Note: This for use with Phillips Senseo pod coffee maker models only as is the Ecopad. It comes with one podholder, a coffee scoop and 100 filters.

Review: Aerobie AeroPress Coffee & Espresso Maker

Review from Single Serve Coffee.com - Coffee Pod Reviews Aero Press 03The staff here at Single Serve Coffee.com have been kicking the tires on the new Aerobie Aeropress for over a month now. Did you notice something about the title of the coffee maker? Yes. The same company that makes the Aerobie flying discs and other fun outdoor products makes the Aeropress. If you've ever thrown an Aerobie you know it really works. The frisbee like rings are much easier to throw than frisbees and go very far. So we had high expectation s for the Aeropress coffee maker from such an ingenious inventive company.

Since this is a little different than other single serve coffee makers we normally review we want to ensure you that it is in fact a single serve coffee maker. Yes - you will need espresso ground coffee from either your grinder or by purchasing some pre-ground coffee from coffee companies like illy but making a cup of Aeropress coffee is very easy and intended to make one cup of perfect coffee or espresso.

Rumor Mill: New Starbuck's Single Serve Coffee Machines?

Images-1-6We've been hearing rumblings of several new machines debuting from Starbucks next month and one of the rumors is they may be coming out with their own line of Single Serve Coffee machines.

Everyone here at Single Serve Coffee.com thinks this would be a big win for everyone. If Starbucks sold the coffee pods exclusively (or whatever method the machine uses) then they could still control the distribution and you'd still have to go to their store to pick up some new pods and get a cup of coffee hot off the Starbuck's presses. We'd even settle for some real Starbucks coffee pods.

There's a very interesting thread in the Single Serve Coffee forums that alludes to just an item coming out.

i thought i would give you all a heads up. there are new coffee machines coming out at Starbucks in the next month and I have been given a small hint that one may be a single serve machine of some sort. When I get all the info I will post here for all you single servers to know!!

Sound off in the forums and give your thoughts on these new mystery machines.

New Winter Classic Blend & Golden French Toast K-Cups from Green Mountain

Kcup Assorted LargeGreen Mountain has introduced two new K-Cups for your Keurig brewer to keep you a little warmer and cozier over the cold winter months.

T4031 LargeStarting with their new Winter Classic Blend which brings together the warmth and subtle earthiness of Indonesian coffee with the mellow brightness of Central and South American beans. We have to admit the new blend does sound very interesting. The expected result? A toasty, subtly caramelly cup with a smooth, rounded body and a hint of nutty sweetness in the finish.

If this is even close to the Holiday Blend, then we'll be sold. We really enjoyed the Holiday Blend K-Cups and found it to be an excellent cup of coffee.

T4034 Large-1Now the Golden French Toast sounds even wilder!

"This coffee makes me sooooo hungry! I get hungry just thinking about it. Reminds me of thick French toast smothered in butter and cinnamon-infused Vermont maple syrup. Yummy and fun!"

We'll be reviewing these K-Cups in the next few weeks and should have a full run down of our impressions of these new K-Cups from Green Mountain.

Review: My K-Cup Keurig Reusable Filter

The reusable K-Cup® filter assembly allows you to use your own gourmet ground coffee in your Keurig® brewer. The My K-Cup Keurig Reusable Filter will work in your Keurig Elite B40 Brewer, Keurig B50, Keurig Special Edition Ultra Elite B60, Keurig B70 Brewer, and the Breville BKC600XL Gourmet Single Cup Brewer.

Images-1-5The reusable K-Cup filter is also now available to the general public via Green Mountain Coffee's web site. You can purchase both the reusable K-Cup assembly and extra filters. We received just an assembly and one filter for testing but can tell if you really wanted to enjoy this for a couple of cups of coffee in the morning having an extra filters will make repeat cups of coffee much easier.

Img 2011We embarked on our first round of testing using Pete's House Blend coffee. We frequent Pete's Coffee Shop in Harvard Square here in Cambridge, MA all the time and know that special flavor you get from any Pete's Coffee. How would the My K-Cup Keurig Reusable Filter do when brewing up a cup of coffee? How hard would it be to fill? What would the mess be like? How hard would the clean up be?

Update: You can now purchase the My K-Cup Keurig Reusable Filter at Green Mountain Coffee Roaster's web site.
