Review: Diedrich Morning Edition K-Cups from Single Serve Coffee.com
Everyone here at Single Serve Coffee.com is always looking for that perfect breakfast blend cup of coffee, because sometimes in the morning you don't want some super heavy cup of coffee but you might want something full and complex. Jim Evans at CoffeeWhiz.com sent us a set of Diedrich K-Cups for the Keurig B-40 Elite, Keurig B50 Gourmet, Keurig B-60 Special Edition brewers and we have been enjoying the Diedrich Morning Edition K-Cups over the past week.
But let's talk a little about Diedrich first. The Diedrich Story is as rich as the flavor of their coffee. It all started in 1916, when Charlotte Diedrich inherited a coffee plantation in Costa Rica. The coffee knowledge from owning the plantation passed down the different generations of Diedrichs until they opened a coffeehouse in the 1960s followed by many more. They now have over 30+ store locations and you can also order their coffee and K-Cups online at Diedrich Coffee, Inc.
Now Diedrich describes their Morning Edition K-Cups as:
A full-bodied, full roast with creamy vanilla sweetness, aromas of leather and spice and a hearty satisfying finish.
What did we think? How satisfying is the finish? We can tell you right now this is a very full bodied cup of coffee that has a sweet yet satisfying finish.

Weekend: Single Serve Coffee GPS Anyone?
Okay - so maybe the TomTom Go 700 Portable GPS doesn't find coffee pods or k-cups but it does find Dunkin Donut coffee shops. GPS Lodge has an interesting tidbit on how the new TomTom Go 700 Portable GPS has incorporated the Dunkin’ Doughnuts franchises into its Point of Interest (POI) database for its GPS products. This means adding over 4,400 Dunkin’ Doughnut outlets and over 2,700 Baskin-Robbins outlets nationally.
Now personally we can do without the Baskin-Robbins, but when we're out and about and without a travel mug of single serve coffee, it would be nice to know where a Dunkin Donuts is from time to time.
Everyone here at Single Serve Coffee was pretty sure we were missing out on music making during the coffee drinking process and now we can have both. These coffee tables are also designed with kids in mind, most of the company's offerings combine tables, chests, and chairs with a xylophone, with each slat playing a different note.
Why are musical furnishings better than a regular furnishings? Fun. The tables start at $175 for a musical chair all the way up to $3,500 for a "quartet" table). But can you really put a price tag on music made on your coffee table? We think not. Fire up the Keurig! It's time for another round of Sumatra and dance!
Review: Black & Decker Home Café One Cup Coffee Maker GT300 from Single Serve Coffee.com
The Black & Decker Home Café System GT300 single serve coffee maker is the update from 2004's Black & Decker Home Cafe system. The older Home Cafe HCC100 system was plagued with issues regarding not being able to open, bad pumps, and a plastic taste to the coffee. There was even several issues regarding the system simply melting from the brewing process (please read the thread here).
The Black & Decker Home Café One Cup Coffee Maker GT 300 is supposed to fix many of these troubling issues and seeks out to do so. The Black & Decker Home Café System Generation II has a much improved quality about the machine, features a much smaller footprint, and the coffee pod chamber is also improved over the earlier model (you can read our first impressions here.)
The Home Cafe system from Black & Decker allows you to use coffee pods and specialty pods with a set of three different coffee pod holders. There is a single coffee pod holder, a double coffee pod holder, and the specialty pod holder which is used for cappuccino pods. For use with Home Cafe one cup brewers, you can purchase Millston and Folgers coffee pods. The system will also brew tea pods from Lipton tea and other manufacturers. The coffee pod holders will also work with any 7-11 gram pod in the single pod holder and you can use two 7 gram pods in the double pod holder.
We just found you can take 10% off your purchase of $25 or more of Kitchen & Housewares or Bed & Bath products today at Amazon.com. Just spend $25 or more on Kitchen & Housewares or Bed & Bath products and use this promotional code at checkout: IODISCNT. This offer applies only to Amazon.com purchases made between February 15, 2006, and February 28, 2006.
That makes Tassimo $169.99-$16.99 = $152.99, or Senseo $79.99-7.99 = $71.99, and Krups Home Cafe $119.99-$11.99=$107.99.
NOTE: This offer will only work with products sold directly from Amazon.com
First Impressions: Black & Decker Home Café System Generation II
We've been testing the Black & Decker Home Café System Generation II single serve coffee maker over the past week and thought before the full review (you can check out our review of generation I here) we'd give our first impressions.
If you can remember way back to 2004, the first generation Black & Decker Home Café System was nothing short of a disaster. We didn't like the plastic tasting coffee and readers continually write in with issues regarding the overall quality of the machine.
The Black & Decker Home Café System generation II isn't a big leap forward. The machine features a single, double, and special pod holder and has been redesigned as far as look and controls but that's about where it ends and begins. So far we've been largely unimpressed with the coffee maker - the machine is mostly made of plastic including the pod holders, and we've yet to brew a cup of coffee comparable to the Mr. Coffee Home Cafe (which is a very good machine), Senseo, or the more expensive Bunn My Cafe.

Got a Salton Espresso Machine or Melitta One:One? Get Some Help
Sometimes we post something that gets so into Google and other search engines that you couldn't imagine the types of comments it can dredge up, or needs it would fulfill, or better yet the shear power the entry would have in bringing people in need together - especially coffee drinkers.
Last year we posted that the maker of Melitta One:One - Salton Inc. was having a few financial difficulties. It was one of those posts we put up to keep everyone here at Single Serve Coffee.com aware of the choices they've been making when buying a single serve coffee machine. Now if you Google "salton trouble" - we end up being #1. From being #1 in just about every search engine, the post has brought together over 99+ commenters who have missing manuals, need spare parts, and all kinds of other interesting tidbits.
We've called Salton several times and they're always interested in helping out everyone which is great. We've even updated the post with the phone number and email and the comments keep coming and you know what? We'll take them. It's pretty exciting to help so many people out, and perhaps after they get the manual, they'll finally be able to make a perfect cup of single serve coffee.
FYI: Salton replacement parts and owners manuals can be ordered at 800-233-9054 or by emailing Consumer Relations at: consumer_relations@toastmaster.com

Green Mountain Coffee Reports 26.8 Percent Quarterly Net Sales Gain; Keurig Drives Growth
Looks like those little k-cups are really helping to drive the bottom line at Green Mountain Coffee and other roasters. With sales up 26.7 percent over last year at Green Mountain Coffee, we would imagine some more k-cup varieties from them are right around the corner.
Dollar sales growth was strongest in the office coffee service channel, contributing a third of the sales increase. Office coffee pounds were up 26.7 percent over the prior year. The high growth in this channel was due to strong K-Cup® sales, driven by increased penetration of the Keurig® B100 brewers in small offices, by the introduction of "Extra Bold" K-Cups, and by the continued success of tea in K-Cups.
We've been searching for something like this for an upcoming birthday for a coffee drinker we know who likes to go and sit outdoors (we know - outdoors!) and have coffee while they paint. Currently they use a rather old Thermos brand to keep their coffee hot from their Keurig B60 after putting two travel mug sized Sumatran Extra Bold into it. We're thinking this gem from Bodum will compliment both the activity and perhaps even keep the coffee a bit warmer, and face it - it's very stylish and a bit fun.
Originally designed in 1983, the lipstick carafe was a runaway success. Today, it's been re-engineered for the 60th anniversary, a tribute to Danish design. Bodum's lipstick travel carafe is designed with a vacuum sealed, double-walled stainless steel that keeps beverages hot for up to six hours. Durably made, it's virtually unbreakable. The stainless steel body insulates up to 34-ounces of your favorite beverage. The flow valve is an easy-to-operate push button that helps keep the heat in even during the pouring process. The lipstick shape directs the liquid in an even flow while the cup acts as a lid.
Sometimes we just chart out on a coffee table search and find nothing that special, but today we found this little number. It's square. It's called cappuccino, and we are in love. Why couldn't have this arrived on Valentine's Day this week? :-)
We're pretty excited here around the Blogpire. Over the past few months we've been cooking up a new site to bring to you - ReallyNatural.com. If you need tips on living naturally (Birkenstocks not required) - then this is the site for you. ReallyNatural.com is your resource for product reviews of all of those consumer food, health and beauty, and household goods marketed as 'natural', 'organic' and 'environmentally friendly'.
We received this coffee earlier in the week and have been sampling through both the Kona Blend and the French roast - what can we say? The Tully's French Roast knocked us down dead in our coffee drinking tracks and the Kona blend? A very interesting medium roast coffee that also is very good.
Tully's French Roast & Kona Blend K-Cups Arrive For Review
Jason Loy at Keurig was kind enough to send us a sampler pack of the new K-Cups from Tully's Coffee. We're currently sampling the Kona Blend coffee this morning and so far - so good. It's a nice medium roast cup of coffee and very smooth. We'll have a full review soon.
Each of Tully's Coffee K-Cups have the full compliment of coffee - weighing in at 11.5 grams a piece. We'll let you know when you can order these K-Cups online.
Green Mountain Coffee Roasters have announced 4 new K-Cups:
Heifer Hope Blend
National Wildlife Blend
Newman's Special Blend Extra Bold
Newman's Special Decaf
All four new K-Cups are double-certified Fair Trade Organic.
Both the Heifer Hope Blend and the National Wildlife blend are to help those charities raise money and help their cause. The Newman's K-Cups are used to raise money, as Paul Newman donates all of the royalty he receives after taxes to educational and charitable purposes.
These new K-Cups will be available for order after February 20th at Green Mountain.
Okay - we know it's a tough holiday but you can at least have a perfect cup of coffee right? We're focusing on coffee's we think would match Valentine's Day perfectly. So if you're looking for that perfect cup of single serve coffee this morning - we recommend the following:

Scott. K. Plail of Black Mountain Gold Coffee sent us in this article on the interesting and growing world of flavored coffees. We love a good flavored K-Cup or coffee pod, and it's nice to get some background on how flavored coffee got it start.
How far back does flavored coffee go? How do you make a great flavored coffee? How big is the market? What can you expect from a good flavored coffee? Sit back - it's the weekend and learn about flavored coffee in all its wonder.
We've received a batch of Diedrich K-Cups to review here at Single Serve Coffee.com. We've never visited a Diedrich coffee shop or really had the pleasure of sampling any of the Diedrich coffees. This morning we're sitting down with a cup of their Sumatra coffee and so far - we think it's pretty good.
As we dream of summer here in the Northeast, the staff at Single Serve Coffee has been pouring over tons of patio furniture. We dream of having coffee on the back porch instead of sitting in the kitchen dreaming of it being warmer than 18 degrees outside.
In our endless pursuit of the ultimate patio coffee table we found this little number. Sure - it looks like the top of a pie with all those wholes, but when the spring and summer rains come you're not going to want water to stay on top. And if you do spill your coffee outside on the table - who cares - it will go right on through.
You'll need to remember only one thing for the week ahead - VALENTINE'S DAY. Many of our blogs will be feature some tips and tricks for Valentine's Day so check them out. If you're looking to be nice and smooth - Shaving Stuff already has posted Valentine's Day Shaving Specials. Now on with the Best of the Blogpire!
Revisiting Tassimo: Suchard's Hot Chocolate Part III
Okay - so we know were supposed to cover hot chocolate yesterday but we had too much fun making Cappuccinos with Tassimo. Today we'll go over our impressions of hot chocolate made with Suchard Hot Chocolate T-Discs.
Suchard Hot Chocolate T-Discs come packed 18 for $7.99 in a two sleave baggish like box. That brings each hot chocolate you make cost in the $.45 cent range. We like the price but how good is the hot chocolate?
The hot chocolate isn't made with milk and syrup, it's made with chocolate syrup in the Suchard Hot Chocolate T-Disc and then hot water from the Tassimo reservoir. When we first reviewed the Tassimo - we were quite impressed with the hot chocolate but since we routinely make our hot chocolate with milk now - how does it compare?
Revisiting Tassimo: Making a Cappuccino Tassimo Style
In the second part of our series this week on Tassimo, we wanted to focus on one of the key hot beverages Tassimo can make easily - a Cappuccino. We love a good Cappuccino and resort to all kinds of different methods to make them in the Single Serve Coffee.com test kitchen. We sometimes use our Francis Francis!, or we may pull a shot using the Nespresso and microwave some milk and then froth it up. Whatever the method we have our standards when it comes to Cappuccinos - good buttery milk flavor and a note of espresso coffee.
One of the key differences in the Tassimo system (see our review earlier last year for all the details) is the ability to use actual liquid milk that is shelf stable in a large-double stacked T-Disc to create Cappuccinos. When you purchase the Tassimo T-Discs to create Cappuccinos - they come dual packed with espresso discs and milk T-Discs. You'll pay $9.99 for 10 espresso discs and 10 milk discs - putting the price of your Cappuccino at around $1. Not bad and about 1/3 the cost of a similar drink at Starbucks.
We fired up the Tassimo and proceeded to create a Tassimo Cappuccino using the Gevalia Cappuccino T-Discs.
We thought we'd revisit the Tassimo and update our impressions of the coffees we tested and also some of the new flavors that weren't available at launch of the product.
When we first reviewed Tassimo in August of 2005 the machine was not even out on the market. We received a pre-release machine that was a final machine build and tested away using that system. At the time both the milk and hot chocolate T-Discs were half the size of the final ones you can purchase today.
We started with getting the machine all primed up and ready for making a simple shot of the new Carte Noire Espresso. We noticed right away how big the reservoir is. It's simply huge. At 64 ounces of water holding power the reservoir for Tassimo takes a long time to fill up but we bet it doesn't need filling that often. It should be able to make 8 - 8 oz beverages and more espresso shots than we can count.
The Keurig Gourmet Single Cup Brewing System has been selected for the 48th GRAMMY Awards' Gift Lounge. What's a gift lounge? Well - if you're a presenter or winner - or we would bet someone who attend the Grammy's in any fashion - you might get one of these gift baskets valued at over $5000 bucks. We'd be pretty excited to get coffee over some weird lotion or watch any day.
"We are honored to be a part of the GRAMMY Gift Lounge," says Keurig CEONick Lazaris. "Whether recording in the studio, touring on the road, orenjoying time with friends and family at home, we at Keurig hope this year's celebrated artists will sit back -- with a gourmet cup of Keurig coffee ortea, of course -- and reflect on a sensational year of music." Keurig gourmet brewing systems are appropriate for any coffee or tea drinker who desires great taste, extensive variety, and unsurpassedconvenience.
Even though the weather has been mild, most of the staff here at Single Serve Coffee.com have either had the flu, a cold, or just felt that damp Northeast weather get them down. We've been drinking lots of different teas in our Keurig B-60 Special Edition brewer but were amazed when we tasted the Canarino K-Cups.
Last month we got a sample pack of Timothy's Canarino K-Cups from Jim Evans at CoffeeWhiz.com to try out. Let me tell you - these Canarino K-Cups are the perfect - get you out of a cold/flu - funk beverage we've ever tested.
We just found Tassimo for $144.99 at Amazon.com. That's a savings of over $25 from the normal price of $169.99. Just enter the code VALENTIN at checkout. You can also get other single serve coffee brewers at this price provided you spend over $125 in Kitchen and Housewares.
If you're not familiar with Tassimo you can read our full review here. We think the Tassimo is ideal for single serve coffee drinkers who want the full range of hot beverages like lattes, cappuccinos, espresso, and hot chocolate.
It's Coffee Table Friday - Coffee Table Book Style!
Ever wonder if some crazy person would really make a coffee table book about coffee tables? Well - look no further.
This giant hardcover book can sit perched atop your coffee table and entertain guests about other coffee tables. The book features modern to not so modern coffee tables and other coffee table information.
Wait a minute! Didn't Kramer come up with this from Seinfeld? Oh Mama!
Finally - it's here. Grindmaster has announced their new consumer pod brewer the GPOD. This may be the first consumer single serve coffee maker to be a few letters off from an iPod. We'll be getting one of these to test in the Single Serve Coffee.com test kitchen as soon as we can. In the mean time you can read our review of their Commercial OCS Pod Brewer. We really liked the commercial brewer but often found larger pods would not fit as well as a 10 gram and under coffee pod in the brewer over the past several months.
Grindmaster GPOD Consumer Coffee Pod Brewer Features:
GPOD PrecisionBrew™ Single Cup Brewing System – A non-proprietary pod-based brewing system combines commercial infusion technology with digitally controlled brew sequencing to ensure a great tasting cup of coffee every time, in less than one minute.

Review: Mr. Coffee Home Cafe AT 13 Generation II from Single Serve Coffee.com
It's been over a year since we tested the original Mr. Coffee Home Cafe. We liked this Home Cafe single serve coffee brewer much better than the Black & Decker Home Cafe. The quality of the Mr. Coffee was a little better and we also felt the coffee it produced was a little better as well.

Review: Green Mountain Coffee Fair Trade Winter Classic Blend K-Cups from Single Serve Coffee.com
Winter is upon us and so our various coffees for our single serve coffee machines touting they'll be perfect for a nice cozy cup of coffee. Fair Trade Winter Classic blend from Green Mountain coffee is just such a coffee for your K-Cup single serve brewer. We fired up our trusty Keurig B60 and sat back hoping this Winter blend would do the trick.
The Winter Classic Blend brings together Indonesian coffee with Central and South American beans. The resulting coffee is intended to bring about a very caramel like coffee with a smooth round taste and finish. We used the 7.25 oz setting on the B60 with water temperature coming out in the 188-189 degrees F range. We also sat back in our big easy chair, put a blanket over us, and proceeded to see how much the Winter Classic Blend improved our "coziness".
