The whisper quiet Keurig Platinum B70 with
Quiet Brew Technology and an Iced Coffee setting.
Keurig is updating the Keurig Platinum B70 with two new features this August - Quiet Brew Technology and an Iced Coffee setting. We recently visited Keurig, and found these two new features to be really what the Single Serve Coffee doctor had ordered.
We love our current Keurig Platinum B70, but the end of the brew cycle was very loud. Now the pump that made all that noise has been redesigned, and the resulting brew cycle is whisper quiet. The Quiet Brew Technology will only be featured on the B70 this Fall.

Color Changing Coffee Mug - Is Your Coffee Hot or Cool?
We're always in the mood for a mug that changes it's appearance based on hot or cold. Sure, we've seen color changing mugs in the past, but this one is straight forward, and actually nice looking. The black color is cold, and the white stands for the hot. The lettering on the mug will also change from cold to hot. The price - a cool $25. HOT!
Q&A with Kraft Canada's Tassimo Customer Support Department
We're always interested in getting to the bottom of shipping and single serve coffee availability issues here at Single Serve Coffee in the United States and of course any country single serve coffee is sold. Our Canadian correspondent S.H. has some details regarding shipping and customer service, shipping, and T Disc availablity for Tassimo in Canada.
-------------------------
Kraft Canada ships their eShop orders via Canada Post Expedited Parcel from a warehouse in Kitchener, Ontario and depending on which end of the country you live in, it takes on average 5 to 6 days to receive your order. I've found over the past several months that you can obtain answers to most of your questions by calling Kraft's Tassimo Customer Support Department; however, your luck depends on 2 things:
Asking for info politely
Getting in contact with a rep who hasn't had a long day
I decided to take another try at calling customer support recently and was lucky enough to speak with a rep that was more than willing to answer anything I asked. Here's the brief Q&A session I had with her:
Q: "Why doesn't Kraft provide tracking numbers for eShop orders?"
A: "We don't want to give clients the tracking number since Kraft is in charge of tracking the parcels. If a parcel gets lost or damaged and you (the client) action a follow-up request with Canada Post, you (the client) then assume full responsibility for everything. Kraft would waive all responsibility. We can provide tracking numbers if you agree to use them ONLY for tracking purposes and to call Kraft customer service should any problems arise with your order."
Single Serve Coffee We're Drinking - Coffee People Bold Black Tiger Dark Roast K-Cups
We've been on a Coffee People K Cup kick as of late. We reviewed the Extra Bold Black Tiger K Cups not too long ago, and recently picked up a bunch, and Wake Up Call as well from Coffee People. This is just amazing coffee. It's dark, rich, and has a bite to it that kicks your day into gear.
i-Roast 2 Arrives for Review - Roast Your Own Single Serve Coffee
We've been trying to get into the home coffee roasting game for quite awhile here at Single Serve Coffee, and we're really excited to finally have our own i-Roast 2 in the house for some coffee roasting fun. We've got two sets of GREEN - yes GREEN unroasted Columbian coffee beans to start with, and we'll be testing out the i-Roast 2 over the next week or so.
Now, some would say that Single Serve Coffee and home roast really don't go hand and hand, and we say to them - NO WAY! We've actually been drinking lots of home roasted coffee from the Single Serve Coffee staffers for over a year now. We use the My K-Cup Reusable filter with our Keurig brewers, and various ground coffee accessories in our coffee pod brewers including the Perfect Pod maker with the coffee we've received, and it's always amazing.
We'll have a full review of the i-Roast 2 very soon, and directions on how you can start home roasting your own Single Serve Coffee, and what you'll need to be successful.
Do you have any experience as a Single Serve Coffee reader roasting your own coffee? If so - sound off in the comments and let us know things we should and shouldn't try.

Coffee Pod Maker Baronet Still Growing Amid Competition
Getting the behind the scene details on one of our favorite coffee pod makers here at Single Serve Coffee is always exciting, and this article we found at the Courant is exceptional. It has full details on how Bruce Goldsmith, president of Baronet Coffee Inc., knows his company can't be content to sit still, and is the third generation to roast coffee under the Baronet name. Click on through for an amazing read, and lots of details regarding their inception, growth, and where they think the single serve coffee market is going.
Truck Runs on Single Serve Coffee Grounds - Coffee Drinkers Rejoice
Gas prices are really high in the US, and over the next few Summer months expected to climb higher. We're starting to see a lot of innovation in the world of the combustion engine, with hybrid models of cars that use electric and gas, and also diesel cars converting over to run on vegetable oil. Given the variety of different methods you could pick to power your automobile, we never thought we'd see a truck powered by coffee grinds.
The truck above is powered by a wood gas generator, and this one runs on coffee grounds. The Cafe Racer is a 1975 GMC pickup that burns up used coffee to create a combustible gas. This method of powering a vehicle is called "gasification", and the article below has lots of cool info on how gasification can be used, and pros and cons of the method.
Sure a tank of "coffee grounds" is going to require a lot of used K Cups or coffee pods, but in the end you'll be not only drinking "Fair Trade Organic" coffee, but also helping out the environment when you drive to work.
Top 10 Best Selling Single Serve Coffee Makers - May 2008
Month to month we look at the top selling single serve coffee makers and the single serve coffee makers with the most interest here at Single Serve Coffee. You can see the Aeropress with all it's manual pressing wonder is still a big seller, followed by Keurig, Senseo, Tassimo, and Nespresso. We've provided links to all of our reviews for you to check out as well.
Do you think these coffee makers represent the best selling or the best? What single serve coffee makers do you think should make a best of list regardless of sales? Sound off in the comments and let us know.
Second Nespresso Design Contest Winners - CoffeeLuxury Celebrated
"Untitled" the winner of the Second Nespresso Design Competition looks more like
a nightlight than an espresso machine.
Nespresso always have the most amazing designs for their single serve coffee machines. Recently they held an awards ceremony for their second design contest in Milan. In total 4 winners were announced, including:
First place was awarded to Brice Genre and Hanika Perez of the Université Toulouse Le Mirail in France for their creative design, ”Untitled," which is an incredibly original coffee maker resembling a thermosensitive work of art that gradually changes appearance thanks to the heat of the water. Renowned designer Giulio Cappellini from Italy presented the €12,000 cash prize to the two students
The second-place award went to Andreas Diefenbach from Staatliche Akademie Der Bildenden Künste in Germany. His design was entitled, "Pearl,” a round coffee-maker with a luxurious design.
Millete Balazs and Telekes Tamas from MOME - Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Hungary, was the third-place winner with their in-flight coffee machine, "Enjoy It While Flying."
The Special mention was awarded to Francois Saudubray from EID in France for his "SOPRANO" design. An ingenious system of covers, each with a colour that is association with a particular Nespresso Grand Cru, makes it possible to preserve the aroma of coffee while recognizing one's cup.
Simplehuman Coffee Pod Brewer Discontinued - New Model in 2009
We've been getting lots of reader write-ins and comments that the simplehuman coffee pod brewer has been discontinued due to a high failure rate. Bummer. The simplehuman brewer has performed well over the past year here at Single Serve Coffee. We loved the design of the brewer sans it not having a true double coffee pod holder.
From a comment:
My 8 month old unit stopped working. I called SimpleHuman Customer service (5/12/08) and was told that the product has been discontinued due to a high failure rate. Got a 100% refund since I bought direct from their website. I imagine purchases from other sources will not be as lucky. I see it still offered for sale at other web sites. Beware! They are re-engineering a unit for 2009.
At least with the bad news there is some good news as well. Simplehuman expects to have a redesigned brewer out in 2009 for all your coffee pod brewing needs. We'll try and confirm these rumors as we find out more direct from the source.
Walmart in Canada has a large seletion of T Discs.
S.H. - our Canadian correspondent for all things Tassimo in Canada has put together a comprehensive list of places to get Tassimo T Discs in Canada. We thought we'd pass along his findings for all of our Canadian friends here at Single Serve Coffee.
From S.H.:
Braun introduced their Tassimo TA1200 hot beverage system in Canada a few years ago and limited the release of the TA1400 to a few select specialty retailers. As a result, the TA1200 has been the predominant model sold throughout most Atlantic retail outlets. It took a while for T-Disc retailers to appear but 4 have emerged to date:
I decided to take a trip to a few local Superstore & Wal-Mart locations as the nearest LNT or Home Outfitters are over 3 hours away. When it comes to grocery stores, Atlantic Superstore has the best selection of T-Discs with the exception of any Twinings, Maxwell House, espresso or decaf varieties.
You can get your T Discs in Canada at most Atlantic Super Stores.
Wal-Mart carries everything except decaf & espresso (they just added Starbucks discs a few weeks ago). Both Home Outfitters and Linens-n-Things carry the entire Canadian T-Disc line-up. Sobeys is another national grocery chain as well as Superstore's primary competitor; however, they only carry 1 or 2 Nabob varieties.
Keurig Mini B30 Single Serve Coffee Brewer Details
The Keurig Mini B30 single serve coffee brewer. It comes in
red and white as well.
Keurig, Incorporated has a new addition to its consumer brewer product line - the Mini B30 brewer. We announced last week we had heard rumblings of this new mini brewer for $79, and those rumblings are true. The Mini B30 is basically the Keurig B130 (which we love) for the consumer market.
The Mini B30 brewer is the introduction of a new platform for the Keurig at-home brewing systems. The Mini is a smaller size meaning you can enjoy Keurig brewing at your desk, in your boat, at your vacation home, in your dorm room or just about anywhere. Since there is no water reservoir in the Mini, it takes 3 minutes to heat the water and brew the perfect cup of gourmet coffee, tea or hot cocoa. Just pour in 8 oz of water each time you want to brew. The Mini B30 is the first Keurig brewer available in multiple colors. Retailers will offer the black or white Mini, and the Keurig website will include a vibrant red color.
The Keurig Mini B30 in red and white.
All Keurig brewers use Keurig's patented K-Cup portion packs. K-Cups are "mini-brewers" that eliminate the hassle of grinding beans, measuring coffee, handling filters and messy clean-up while brewing a gourmet cup of coffee or tea in less than one minute. With over 200 different coffee, tea and hot cocoa varieties from 13 gourmet partners, Keurig meets the diverse taste profiles of just about every single serve hot beverage drinker.
This is both a beautiful idea and a potentially really bad idea. We can imagine having a patio version of this coffee table, but in your living room? Not likely. The Planika Fires people will have you believe this design has no smoke, and is also eco friendly. Apparently the fire pit in your table is indeed a mobile fire solution without smoke or smell. It uses a liquid fuel called Fanola. Fanola is based on alcohol thus clean burning. It may be clean, but we can see ourselves after a tough evening and foggy morning catching the daily paper on fire.
Keurig Mini B30 Single Serve Coffee Brewer to Debut this Fall
The Keurig Mini single serve coffee brewer will debut this Fall for $79, and be based on the Keurig B130, according to the information we received from this week's Green Mountain Coffee conference call.
Here's what we know:
"This fall we will be introducing a new consumer brewer at a new, lower retail price point of $79. This brewer will be called the Keurig Mini B30, and is based on our fourth generation brewing technology that is used in our current hotel in-room brewer. The brewer will heat water and brew a cup of coffee, tea or hot coca in less than three minutes. It's smaller than our other at-home brewers, and it will be offered in black, white and red. The Keurig Mini B30 has targeted consumers who want a Keurig brewer for occasional use in home offices, small kitchens, recreational vehicles, dormitory rooms and so forth. This will be a fun product, and we even plan to offer a tote bag as an accessory for the brewer and K-Cups."
We were so impressed with the Keurig B130 from our review, we basically called their bluff on debuting a similar brewer for the home and office space when we did our review.
"The design is also really interesting. This Keurig brewer is the smallest Keurig available, and the footprint alone makes it perfect for your camp, camping, travel trailer, or at the office on your desk. That's if Keurig ever releases this brewer to the general public and not just hotels."
Get Optimally Wired with Caffeine and Single Serve Coffee
It's really no secret the entire staff here at Single Serve Coffee often through periods of bad weather, long nights, and tired mornings look to get optimally wired with caffeine. Sometimes we look to shots of Nespresso, or to the wilds of making a perfect latte with our Lavazza Blue. Other times, we go for the extra bold K Cups praying there's going to be enough caffeine for us to ingest and hopefully make it's way to our veins so we can even stay awake in those late afternoon hours.
We just found an article at Lifehacker stating caffeine may increase the speed with which you work, may decrease attentional lapses, and may even benefit recall-- but is less likely to benefit more complex cognitive functions. Bummer. We always were under the impression that if taken properly, any single serve coffee we produce is going to help and not hurt our ability to recover.
What we learned from the article at Developing Intelligence is that small frequent doses, and not large cups of mixed coffee/caffeine substances. Also, if you count on caffeine to get you through your day, you may want to really space it out and also reduce the amount you consume to feel the benefits. There's also a bunch of recommendations on other caffeine rich items you can consumer along with your single serve coffee.
Teas and Cocoa Come to Lavazza Blue Single Serve Coffee System
Café-Razzi just introduced a new line up of teas and cocoas for the Lavazza Blue System in addition to the single serve espresso capsules. In contrast to other single serve alternatives, the Lavazza Blue is the only system besides the Tassimo that makes a great espresso, American coffee, tea or cocoa. The K Cup and Flavia systems make a good traditional American style filter coffee, flavored coffee, tea and hot chocolate, but lack high pressure steam to make a true espresso, cappuccino or latte. Nespresso makes a good espresso, but falls short on teas and hot chocolate, but they do have the Lattissima system that does make an amazing latte.
The Tea line up consists of Black, Lemon, Green, Green Fusion, Mint, Chamomile, Fruit and Berry offering a choice of regular and decaffeinated blends. The cocoa is dark rich and super easy to make. It comes as a duo pack of cocoa powder and milk capsules. These new Teas and Cocoa will work in your office or home, use either the LavazzaBlue Pininfarina Pro (LB2210) and Pininfarina Home (LB1010) machines. The strength of the LavazzaBlue system is still the espresso, but it’s great to know you can also make a delicious tea and cocoa whenever you want as well.
Keurig Doubles Shipments of Single Serve Coffee Brewers
The Keurig B70 Brewer - More than 193,000+
Keurig Brewers shipped in the 2nd quarter.
Coffee maker Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. on Thursday said net income rose 89% in the fiscal second quarter as it more than doubled the number of Keurig brewers shipped to customers. Doubled. Wow. About 193,000 Keurig brewers were shipped, more than double the 84,000 shipped in the year-ago quarter. Shipments of its K-Cup single-serve packs rose 68% to 155 million.
We also know that Green Mountain Coffee has opened new facilities to make more K Cups, so there will be no shortages of K Cups as the demand grows exponentially from all of these new customers. Revenue rose 46% to $120.9 million from $82.8 million last year which is also pretty amazing given the current economic situation in the US.
This is going to be another banner year for Single Serve Coffee, let's hope some of the other single serve coffee makers also continue to have the same success.
Keurig 27-Cup-Capacity K-Cup Spinning Carousel - Stop the K Cup Madness
We often here tales of Keurig K Cups strewn on kitchen countertops, and single serve coffee drinkers trying to find the perfect K Cup coffee coffee on a hectic Monday morning. You can now officially stop the K Cup madness with the Keurig 27-Cup-Capacity K-Cup Spinning Carousel. That's right - at least 27 of your favorite K Cups will stay organized, and even your in-laws when visiting will be able to find their favorite cup of single serve coffee in the decaf variety on that hectic Monday morning.
April 2008 Monthly Round-Up for Single Serve Coffee
Is April already over? Wow. 2008 is going fast and there's already a ton of interesting Single Serve Coffee news percolating around. We finally got confirmed details on the new Tassimo Bosch Hot Beverage System, and in April we reviewed lots of coffee gadgets and accessories for your SIngle Serve Coffee maker. Expect lots of Spring/Summer reviews of new coffees as we head into May, and perhaps an exclusive piece of news or two or three as the Summer heats up.
