Keurig B40 Single Cup Brewer - The $99 Keurig K Cup Brewer
One question we get all the time is, "What Keurig K Cup Single Serve Coffee Brewer is right for me?" Well, one way to answer that question is on price and features. It's really hard to beat the Keurig B40 Single Serve Coffee brewer at $99 on price, and the features on the Keurig B40 won't turn you away either.
Basically as you go up in price with the Keurig line with the Keurig B60 and B70 you get auto-on, a clock, different brew sizes, and some blue LED and stainless steel accents on the Keurig brewers. If you aren't looking for any of those bells and whistles, then the Keurig B40 is perfect for you (please read our thoughts and impressions on the Keurig B40 and B60 to get even more details).
The only exception to the upcoming Keurig B40 is the Keurig Mini B30. We love the Keurig Mini B30, but we think it's perfect for your office, camp, or if you really only drink one cup of single serve coffee per day. We think refilling the water reservoir on the Mini makes for the extra $20 bucks - the B40 a better bet.
We can't but recommend the Keurig B40 for it's value and price. You'll get into the world of single serve coffee for only $99, and you'll have the ability to use over 200+ K Cups and the Reusable My K Cup coffee filter as well.
Buy K Cups Today and Show Your Support - Obama or McCain?
We often mix politics with coffee, and things can get a bit heated. CoffeeWhiz.com has a very cool promotion going to show support for your candidate. You can simply buy Obama K Cups or McCain K Cups. We know who we want to win, but we're not going to strong arm you choice. Both the Barack Obama blend and the McCain blend are Coffee People Donut Shop K Cups, so you can't let the blend decide your vote either.

iRoast 2 - Roast Your Own Coffee at Home
We know we've had the i-Roast 2 for the entire summer, and yes we've been using it. We've made quite a few batches of our own coffee, and we've really enjoyed the smell of fresh brewed beans. Our favorite method is to make a small micro batch, and then brew it up that day or early the next morning using our Breville Keurig single serve coffee maker, and the My K Cup Resuseable filter. Here's a video of a recent batch of columbian coffee baking in the iRoast 2. We'll have a full review soon.
How to: Feel Better and Drink the Right Amount of Coffee
We've been sent this article a few times over the summer but never really read it because the title was, "How To: Quit Drinking Coffee". Okay - like that's going to happen, and it's possibly the worst thing we can think of in the world to happen to anyone here at Single Serve Coffee. That being said, after finally reading the entire article, it gives some good tips and tricks on how to reduce stress, feel better, and still have some caffeine.
Not bad advice if things aren't going too well in your daily life. We recommend the following - drink coffee, get out and enjoy other people, and make sure and walk a few blocks everyday. Then have another cup of single serve coffee.
They basically feel this is a better list:
Substituting with Green Tea
Addressing the Social Experience
Use Other Milky Drinks
Take Care With Carbs
The Power Nap
Whatever list you decide - check the article out - it's got some really solid tips and tricks.
Top 10 Best Selling Single Serve Coffee Makers - August 2008
We admit it - we simply didn't provide this data in July. But with that admission out of the way, it's time to sound off the 10 best selling single serve coffee makers here at Single Serve Coffee for August 2008. You can see the Aeropress with all it's manual pressing is still a big seller, followed by Keurig, taking over the 2-3 spots this month. Tassimo has grabbed the 7th and 8th spots, and Senseo has snuck up into 4th place. A new single serve coffee maker to our list of top ten is the Breville BKC600XL Gourmet K Cup Brewer.
Do you think these coffee makers represent the best selling or the best? What single serve coffee makers do you think should make a best of list regardless of sales? Sound off in the comments and let us know.
My fellow Canadians and Americans of the north you will never be without your precious Tim Hortons coffee again. This very cool iPhone app gives you the exact location for anyone with an iPhone 3G. Simply click the button, and it can locate the nearest Tim Hortons and get directions to the store. Now where is my K Cup, Coffee Pod, and T-Disc application for the iPhone? Anyone?
The application is a free download from the App Store.
Nespresso Aeroccino Plus - Froth Hot or Cold Milk Quickly
The Aeroccino Plus froths hot and cold milk.
We love our little Aeroccino (review), and paired with our Nespresso C100T Essenza (review) - it's a tough combo to beat for lattes and cappuccinos. We're excited that Nespresso is improving the Aeroccino with a new larger version of its Aeroccino coffee accessory: the Aeroccino Plus. Besides offering hot milk froth, the new Aeroccino Plus now offers coffee lovers the option to also make cold milk froth. That's right folks - let's froth some cold milk!
How does it work? To produce warm frothed milk, heating the milk to temperatures between 140-149°F/60-65°C, quickly press the button once. To override the heating function, press the button for two full seconds.
The Aeroccino Plus will be available in September as part of a bundle package with the Nespresso Le Cube machine for $429 or the Nespresso D290 for $549 in leading department stores, as well as gourmet kitchen and specialty stores, throughout the United States and Canada. Additionally, the Aeroccino Plus will be sold exclusively as a stand-alone unit for $129 in Nespresso boutiques, including Nespresso’s U.S. flagship boutique at 761 Madison Avenue in New York City, as well as boutiques in Bloomingdale’s in SoHo (New York), Chevy Chase, Md., Costa Mesa, Calif., and Chicago, the Bay in Toronto and Vancouver, and through the Nespresso Club.
Spill Coasters - Stop Single Serve Coffee Spillage
We love the design of this coaster which makes spoon and spillage mess a thing of the past. The sculptured surface catches any coffee that might spill in the center, and the spoon rest catches the rest. Sold in a pack of four in green or grey rubber. We're pretty sure we'd go green over grey.
Computer-Controlled Home Coffee Roaster is Overkill
We've been roasting our own coffee here at Single Serve Coffee over the summer months (more on that next week), and can tell you - it's nice to have a device but total computer control? Overkill. Okay, perhaps for the super serious roaster at home, but for most of us the feel of how the roast is going and controlling the roasting profile manually is part of the fun.
Here's how it works:
A fan inside the roaster controls the roasting process. The roasting chamber itself uses two tubes, one made of bakelite and the other a 3-inch diameter glass tube. To prevent damaging the setup and to allow for heat dissipation, this amazing Computer-Controlled Coffee Roaster uses a high temperature RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) Silicone. A screen at the bottom of the device can be used to empty the roaster and get freshly roasted beans at any time.
We can see the reasons for going this route, but don't do this inside at home or prepare for smoke, noise, and other problems. Click on through for more details on this insane home roasting setup. And yes, even as we've written this article we realize that basically we want the above, and long for more control of our roasting process.
Nescafe Dolce Gusto - Making a Latte or Cappuccino
As we test the European version of the Nescafe Dolce Gusto machine, we're going to pass along our thoughts and impressions on the different drinks this hot beverage and single serve coffee system can deliver. We recently featured the "Lungo" or larger cup of coffee and now we're going to give you our thoughts on lattes and cappuccinos.
The process if very similar to making a latte or cappuccino with a standard espresso machine or a Tassimo is you have one. The lattes come packed with both a milk Smart Capsule and an Espresso Smart Capsule. The different pressure and preparation happens within the Smart Capsule. First you can either add your shot of espresso or if you are more latte focused we like to do our milk first and then espresso. Whatever your method the results will be worth it using the Nescafe Dolce Gusto.
We really like the milk even though it's powder based. We think the quality is hard to tell apart from a milk based prep, and the overall flavor of the latte and cappuccino is excellent. The mouth feel of both beverages is also very good.
We'll have more thoughts and impressions as we do more testing on the Nescafe Dolce Gusto so stay tuned.
Europe: Senseo Latte Select - Integrated Fresh Milk Container for Cappuccinos and Lattes
Single Serve Coffee reader Julian has written in that a new Senseo (7850) called the Senseo Latte Select will debut in Europe this September. The model features an integrated milk compartment that you can fill with fresh milk. The Senseo Latte Select will then brew up a cup of Senseo coffee pod single serve coffee, and whip up some milk to turn it into a cappuccino or latte.
From the German Translation: The Senseo Latte Select is now a lot of warm milk and milk foam into the cup, then comes to the coffee. Completion is the favourite coffee. To put all variations also the perfect glass can be used, the parking space at a height adjustment. The milk containers can be used with a little water at the touch of a button easy to clean. "
Detailed Features of the Select Latte Senseo HD7850:
Cappuccino, latte macchiato, cafe latte or black
Coffee at the touch of a button
Cleaning the milk container by pressing a button
Height adjustable cup Abstellblech for different heights
If you aren't "Twittering" yet - you should be. Twitter allows you to basically type in a sentence or two, and that micro-blog like post gets sent out to all of your friends. The messages are called "tweets", and this Twitsig mug can be printed with your favorites. We like the idea of a very cool tweet being on our mug, but we're not sure we could ever pick the best one that would in fact be timeless. Whatever you decide to print on the mug may lead to buying multiple mugs for all your favorite tweets. We also think this might be the perfect gift for your twitter obsessed friends who drink single serve coffee.
14 Ways Starbucks is Trying to Revitalize It's Brand
Starbucks. You hear the name, and think about the countless coffee shops on every corner. Lately when people say Starbucks, the number one thing we hear is, "Did you know they're closing over 600 stores nation wide?" Well, it was bound to happen, and their explosive growth since 2003-4 has been pretty astounding, but it had to eventually cool off. We would have preferred to see less closings, and a refocusing of their business to save jobs.
Oh well, that didn't happen, but right now Starbucks is in a turn-around stage - with new products like the Clover (which we reviewed this year), and of course new offerings for the upcoming Bosch Tassimo. The article below also has a bunch of brand, store, and ways Starbucks can save money. These ideas might also be great for your personal lives, or business lives - it's a great read.
STOK Coffee Shots - Add Caffeine to Your Single Serve Coffee
With a typical cup of single serve coffee only providing you a modest 90-150 mg boost of caffeine in the morning, it's no wonder STOK has invented the black coffee shot. Pronounced "STOKE", these coffee shots add another 40 Mg of caffeine per serving, which is equivalent to a shot of espresso. It comes in a creamer-like container for portion control, and they recommend a limit of 2 servings per day. They are also not for use by children under age 18, pregnant women or the caffeine-sensitive.
Apparently these are available at several of our local grocers, and we'll see if we can drum a few up. They also have "SWEET" shot besides the black coffee shot (pictured above).
We're big fans of the Senseo single serve coffee pod brewer here at Single Serve Coffee, and we recently found these rumored pictures of the next-generation Senseo at Engadget. Given the design of the current Senseo hasn't changed in shape since 2004 here in the US, it's not surprising Philips may be designing a new Senseo.
We're not sure that this design hits the mark, but it does seem modern in that 1960's sort of way. We'll keep you posted on what else we find out, but for now these pictures are just rumors. We also think it's nice to have some rumored pictures of something other than an Apple iPhone or next generation iPod.
Periodic Coffee Table - Single Serve Coffee Elements
This might be the most interesting, and potentially dangerous single serve coffee table we've featured. This table contains actual samples of each of the 92 naturally-occurring elements - spooky.
"The remaining radioactive samples are supplied in the form of a small piece of low activity uranium or thorium bearing mineral in which a few atoms of the relevant element will exist."
That's right. Each of the cells actually contains the element itself - except for the elements that exist for only seconds. We can only imagine how much this coffee table would take over the hearts and minds of anyone you have over for a cup of single serve coffee. This table will set you back $8550, and also has a half-life of about 10,000 years.
The Coffee Artisan was kind enough to send along a sample of the Fratello Hawaiian Hazelnut Premium Coffee Pods. We really like this blend, and find the 9.5 gram size to have the perfect amount of coffee to produce a rather mild yet medium flavored coffee.
Bustelo Cool is the latest single serve coffee drink in a can to take our office by storm. If you're not familiar with the Bustelo name - it's a very dark roasted coffee and coffee brand that's been around a long time. And what is Bustelo Cool? Bustelo Cool is your favorite Cuban coffee drink with a cooler kick, and packaged in a hassle-free can.
The drink also is not just single serve coffee in a can. The Bustelo Cool is a cafe con leche in a can, that is both sweet and interesting. A cafe con leche is espresso mixed with cream, and you can really taste the sweeter notes in the mix. We found the serving size to also be perfect at just 130 calories - so more of a treat to you sans sugar and cream single serve coffee drinkers out there.
We think you should check this very COOL single serve coffee in a can. If you want to order a six pack or two, you can use the discount code "bcool" at Java Cabana by using the link below.
As we're testing the Nescafe Dolce Gusto, we thought we'd share making a lungo cup of coffee with this new machine. The Dolce Gusto featured in the video is the European version of the Dolce Gusto - the US version will have a different puncture mechanism to pierce the Smart Capsule all contained in the brew head. The Dolce Gusto heats very quickly, and you can see the resulting lungo cup of single serve coffee is very "Nespresso" like - with a high quality crema on top.
You can get all the specifics of the US version in our earlier article.
The Podster is design is very simple, and unlike the Perfect Pod Holster, the Podster requires the the My K- Cup reusable filter. There's also a fair amount of rigging to get everything set in place, but if you do the Podster works great.
