Baronet Targets Coffee Pods for Senseo
This isn't the final packaging of the
Baronet Senseo coffee pods, but it will be similar.
Baronet Coffee will reveal coffee pods targeted at the Senseo single serve coffee maker in the near future. These coffee pods will come packed in a "foil" bag, much like the current Senseo branded coffee pods. The coffee pods will be a bit larger - in the 7.5 gram to 8 gram range, but you'll be able to use two coffee pods in the double Senseo holder, and one in the Senseo single pod holder.
Review: Nespresso Essenza Touch Single Serve Coffee and Espresso Maker
We've been using the Nespresso Essenza Touch in black and grey for over two weeks now, and find the texture and finish of this Nespresso to be very special. The Nespresso Essenza Touch is basically a Nespresso C100T (you can read our review of the C100T here), but it has a super smooth coating. This may be the first single serve coffee maker we've every used, where sliding your hand over it seems the thing to do each morning we make a cup of single serve coffee.
So, the big difference really is the coating. The Nespresso Touch features are the same as the C100T (which is an updated C90 - you can read our review of the C90 here).
Overall features are:
High-pressure pump (19 bars)
Thermoblock heating element
Programmable and automatic control of the amount of coffee in the cup
Functional handle allows for easy coffee preparation
Automatic ejection of used capsules on lifting the handle
Collection container for used capsules
Removable water tank (1L capacity)
Special Smooth Coating - feels like an iPod case or silicone
It's also good to note you can only use Nespresso coffee capsules with the Nespresso C100T Essenza. This is by design, and you'll also need to sign up for the Nespresso club to do you ordering or stop by a Nespresso boutique to get some new ones.
We're very excited to announce Clover has landed at Starbucks. Our local Starbucks on Mass. Ave in Cambridge near Harvard Square has a Clover and tasting menu now, and we've recently had an amazing cup of single serve coffee from their Clover. If you're not familiar with the Clover (read our earlier review here) it's really the ultimate cafe single serve coffee machine, allowing for small batches and a tasting menu of coffees because each cup of coffee matched with a unique coffee can be made one cup at a time.
We sampled the Burundi. A cup of coffee from the Clover is about
2x the price of a regular cup of Starbucks coffee.
Clover is basically a reverse-french press that allows for the input of the coffee you've chosen, volume of water, and the temperature and time of brew for the cup of single serve coffee. We've never had a bad cup of coffee from a Clover, and think if you're local Starbucks has one you'll need to treat yourself to a cup or two.
SingleServeEspresso.com has news of the new Special Edition from Nespresso called Jinogalpa. Jinogalpa comes from Nicaragua's best arabica coffee and is split roasted to reach different roast colors then blended after roasting. Nespresso describes it as having "full body, and a smooth crema that reveals soft tones of sandalwood as well as subtle and refreshing herbal accents."
As with every special edition - they sell out very fast. So get Jinogalpa while you can at Nespresso.
Top 10 Best Selling Single Serve Coffee Makers - September 2008
September has been another amazing month for single serve coffee sales across the web, and offline too. We've seen the launch and introduction of the Keurig Mini B30, and the new Tassimo by Bosch. These single serve coffee makers are not showing up on the Top 10 yet, but we expect them to make it in the October/November time frame. Tassimo has risen this month due to price cuts on the TA1400 model, with some prices seen as low as $89 on the model. We've also noticed the Breville BKC600XL Gourmet K Cup Brewer has re-appeared on the list.
Do you think these coffee makers represent the best selling or the best? What single serve coffee makers do you think should make a best of list regardless of sales? Sound off in the comments and let us know.
Four-way Pong Coffee Table - Play Your Way to More Caffeine
Witness a coffee table that took over two years to build - witness it! Yes, the Four-Way Pong coffee table is a thing of beauty, and sure to make you feel less boring when you sit down with those other coffee drinkers in your life. Unfortunately, this is a one of a kind piece, one that was a true labor of love, but we like the concept. We can see in the future Microsoft's Surface being used to make one of these in less time than 2 years, and hopefully even more games than just class Pong.
Final US Krups Nescafe Dolce Gusto Arrives for Review
We've been using the European version of the Nescafe Dolce Gusto for the past month, and we're pleased to announce the final US version of this amazing single serve coffee maker has arrived for review. What are differences between the US and European version? One thing is the smart capsule chamber which is now contained in the brew head, and of course the power switch location. Another key difference is the US version comes with a set of coffee, lattes, and other goodness.
As we reported earlier this year, Starbucks has released Colombia T Discs for Tassimo. The coffee is from Latin America, and has a medium-bodied, smooth and well-balanced distinctive nutty flavor. The Starbucks Colombia T Discs come packed 12 T DISCS per package at $10.99 per package.
These Starbucks Colombia T Discs will work in your Tassimo Suprema Hot Beverage System, as well as the older model TA1400 and TA1200 Tassimo hot beverage systems.
Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Acquires Tully's Coffee
In what is sure to amount to more K Cups for all of us, Green Mountain Coffee has announced plans to acquire Tully's Coffee. We didn't see this one coming, but if it means more K Cups and growth of the Tully's brand alongside the Green Mountain Coffee brand, we'll take it.
Tully’s Coffee Corporation will remain an independent company, owned by its existing shareholders and managed by its existing management team, with a focus on its retail and international division assets. Tully’s retail business will operate under license and supply agreements with GMCR. This arrangement is intended to create consistent representation of the Tully’s brand while providing high quality gourmet coffee to all customers drinking Tully’s branded coffee.
Do you have a Kindle? If so you can now subscribe to Single Serve Coffee on it. Yep - you can download all of our stories each month, and sip your cup of single serve coffee lying on your couch. Sure you can read it on the web, but isn't single serve coffee a bit hotter on a wireless reading device? We think so. Just file this under shameless self-promotion, and welcome to the 21st century.
Handpresso - the portable espresso maker recently held a contest to show off using Handpresso in the wild. The picture above is from Finland and looks pretty wild to us. We use our Handpresso all the time when traveling to ensure a decent cup of coffee, and we love using it daily too when the need of a shot of espresso arrives. Check out the winners, and of course you can read our earlier coverage here and review.
We like several of the ideas including some of our own:

We've received the latest generation of the Nespresso Essenza machine line, the Essenza Touch. The Essenza Touch blends silky-soft finishes with intriguing modern shapes in the Nesspresso Essenza design. Both the soft-touch case and coffee ring defining the coffee nozzle are coated in a smooth, silky finish that so far we're finding really unique in the single serve coffee world. The Essenza Touch comes in two new soothing colors, the Essenza Touch Soft Red and Soft Gray.
Essenza models are available in two styles: a pure, slightly curved design (C-range) and a more curvaceous body shape (D-range). The Essenza Touch Collection 2008 (SRP $249) will be available in September exclusively in Nespresso boutiques, including Nespresso’s U.S. flagship boutique at 761 Madison Avenue in New York City, as well as boutiques in Bloomingdale’s in SoHo (New York), Chevy Chase, Md., Costa Mesa, Calif., and Chicago, and the Bay in Toronto and Vancouver, and through the Nespresso Club (1.800.562.1465 or www.nespresso.com).

Review: Bosch Tassimo Suprema Single Serve Coffee Brewer and Hot Beverage System
The Tassimo Hot beverage system has been out in the US for the past two years, and when it launched was made by Braun. Last year Tassimo decided they needed to update the system, and went with a new partner - Bosch. Even though we really liked the older Braun model, we're glad Bosch got the job. The new Bosch Tassimo is completely redesigned, and the design changes are far reaching. Gone is the annoying loud brewing, the spill back of water after brewing a cup, and the unit heats and brews much faster.
The Bosch Tassimo Suprema Hot Beverage system.
Two models of the TASSIMO hot beverage system by Bosch are now available in the U.S. For this review, we tested the TAS4511UC model with an MSRP of $139.99. The TAS4511UC Bosch Tassimo is now available in select specialty and department stores as well as online. There is also a $99.99 Bosch Tassimo that will be available in select grocery and mass merchandise stores. The main difference in the two models is the water reservoir filtration, and aesthetics.
Keurig Mini B30 Tip - Trick Out the Cup Sensors to Use Clear Mugs
The Keurig Mini B30 has been shipping for less than a week, and already there's tons of write ins on how to use clear glass mugs with the Mini B30. Since the Keurig Mini B30 uses cup sensors, it won't register a clear glass mug in the brew chamber. We're a big user of clear glass mugs, but had settled in to using our "Skywalker Ranch" mug (yes we've visited holy ground) instead of our Bodum Corona coffee mug.
We can't try the below - as we don't have a magic bullet lying around, but you can see the idea behind other items you might use to trick out the cup sensors. We've actually tried using a coaster, and it works great as well.
I purchased the new Mini B30 Keurig on August 27th at Bed Bath & Beyond and I LOVE it! I really wanted the Mini because of its portability. In fact, I'm going to take it with me in my carry-on luggage next month when I travel to CO to welcome my son home from a tour of duty in Iraq. {{{big Army Mom smile}}}
After using my Mini for a week now, and brewing several cups each day (how else could I decide what flavors I like:-) I have a TIP: the Mini has 2 'cup sensors', one on either side of, and just above, the surface of the 'cup plate' and the BREW button will not activate unless your cup is in place. That's actually a very nice feature except that the directions say, and I can confirm, that you can NOT use a glass mug because the sensors will not "read" the clear glass. But I just bought a whole bunch of double wall thermal cups, mugs, glasses, etc., and was dying to brew the coffee into them. So... I first molded aluminum foil around the bottom of the mug and that worked - the sensors were able to 'read' the foil - but it was a pain in the neck. Then I got the brilliant idea to use a jar lid, which worked, and then, finally, one of the rims from the Magic Bullet set that's collecting dust in my cabinet. The rim is the piece that screws on to the Magic Bullet mug after you remove the screw-on blending device - it's just like a mason jar lid without the center in place. The 'rim' is just high enough for the sensors on the Mini to 'read' it. And voila! I get to watch the coffee being dispensed into my crystal clear thermal wall mug! You could, of course, use any appropriately sized jar lid as well, and probably a cupcake paper liner, but I have a black Magic Bullet rim which matches the brewer and makes me very happy. :-) Just wanted to share.
Thank you so much for such a great website!
Sincerely, Dori Johns
There you have it. Be careful - tricking out any sensor can lead to bad results. But if you need to use clear mugs, this might be the method for you.
We reviewed the Archer Farms French Vanilla
Coffee pods back in 2005.
It's a sad day, as many readers have written in that Target has discontinued it's line of Archer Farms coffee pods. We've gotten confirmation ourselves over the phone and email as well as this sent in from a reader below:
The Archer Farms coffee pod collection, including the Tierra Del Sol flavor. has been discontinued and will no longer be available. We regret any disappointment that this may cause.Since we take your comments very seriously, I’ve made sure to share your concerns with our Grocery and Buying teams for future purchasing decisions. So thanks for taking the time to share your questions.
Thanks for writing. Your feedback helps us improve our service commitment to you.
We don't believe the discontinuation of the Archer Farms coffee pods is any indication of the popularity or viability of the coffee pod in the single serve coffee world. The coffee pod has continued to grow in popularity, and Target has been phasing out the Archer Farms coffee pods for quite some time.
We reviewed many of the Archer Farms coffee pods, and really enjoyed them. But don't fret - Archer Farms coffee pods aren't the only coffee pods in town. You can get great coffee pods from Fratello, Baronet, Cool Beans, and other online merchants.
Tassimo Bosch Hot Beverage System Ready to Order and Shipping
That's right - you can now order the Tassimo designed by Bosch, and expect delivery of the new system in early September from several online merchants. Some readers are claiming delivery may be as soon as this week if you order from Amazon.
We've also gotten word that several Single Serve Coffee readers have spotted the new Bosch designed Tassimo Hot Beverage system in the wild:
From Henry:
They had the new Tassimo at the Bloomingdales, King of Prussia, PA store. I couldn't believe it when I saw it because it's so tiny. As short as the Keurig B30, but it was long. (probably as long as the current Keurig. The parts don't feel as nice as the Keurig, but it is a piece of art.
The only downside was they had it priced at $175 retail. They said it's going on Friday for $139.
We'd wait until Friday to get the lower price. Currently, we've found the best pre-order price at Amazon for $139. We'll also have a full review of the Tassimo Bosch Hot Beverage system very soon as our review unit should be arriving this week.
You can read more about the features of this Bosch Tassimo single serve coffee system here.
Le Cube Black and Bronze Patina Nespresso Machines Coming Soon
Nespresso is introducing two new machines for 2008: Le Cube (review) Black and Le Cube Bronze Patina. The new colors Black and Bronze Patina exaggerate the minimalist design of the Le Cube range, with front panels dressed in the new hues and made of anodized aluminum for a subtle and even finish.
Le Cube Black: Timeless Elegance - Elegant like a jaguar, the new Le Cube Black fascinates with its sleek design and timeless elegance. Black, as the most influential non-color of the fashion, architecture and design world is always prepared to make a statement, exuding strong characteristics such as strength, style and sensuality. The new Le Cube Black with its subtle aluminum finish becomes a bold accessory and precious gem in every design aficionados' home.
Le Cube Bronze Patina: Modern Glamour - Modern images of the color bronze might arouse thoughts of golden deserts and sun-kissed summer skin. The new Le Cube hue Bronze Patina, however, takes its inspiration even further back into the past, where the ancient significance of this precious metal describes a color created by time and nature.
All Le Cube models offer one-touch buttons to control the optimal amount of coffee per cup, from the espresso to a Lungo, and is also made for latte macchiato preparations.
