Cuisinart SS-1 Coffee Maker at Tuesday Morning
Tuesday morning will have the Cuisinart single serve coffee maker for $99 starting February 3rd, and some members of the Single Serve Coffee Forums are already seeing the SS-1 at their local Tuesday Morning. Not familiar with Tuesday Morning? It's a discount retailer that often has close outs of single serve coffee makers, linens, and other goodness. We really think the SS-1 at $99 (almost 1/2 off) is a total steal. The SS-1 is one of the best coffee pod brewers we've tested, and if you have a Tuesday Morning near you - pick one up.
Keurig Single Serve Coffee Makers - A Phenomenon in the Recession
There's lots to look at as indicators of the worsening economy, and one of them is coffee - or if you read this site - single serve coffee. So far we've noticed no slow down in the demand, and desire for great coffee for your home. And given the amount of new readers and traffic here at Single Serve Coffee, we're thinking people have moved home for a cup of amazing coffee at 1/3 the cost (the average price for a coffee pod or K-Cup is only ~$.50 making it 1/3 the cost of a typical $1.50 cup of coffee at Starbucks) instead of opting for more expensive fair on the go. You can make one or two delicious cups of coffee with a crema like layer, and the machine does this by using a Multiple podholders, for one or two coffee- or teapods. It has a large removable watertank, for approx. 10 cups of coffee. We are really taken back by the striking design, and found this coffee pod brewer to be unlike any other we've tested.

Yes - we've featured all kinds of mugs here at Single Serve Coffee, but not one that can clearly make your brain hurt. Imagine getting up and filling your coffee mug with piping hot java juice, and then trying to write on it. Well, this mug might not be fore everyone, but if you like being stared at directly with a task while you drink your coffee, then this mug is for you.
Review: Emeril's Organic French Quarter Roast K-Cups
Distributed by Timothy's World Coffees, Emeril's Organic French Quarter Roast is one of the company's latest offerings in the K-Cup market. As noted in a recent review, Emeril is known mostly for his cooking shows on the Food Network and various food products available at most grocery stores. The coffee scene is a relatively new one for him, but he's quickly gaining recognition amongst Keurig users across the nation.
As usual, we decided to choose the 5.25oz brew size to extract the full flavors of this dark roast using our Keurig brewer. The scent reveals hints of hickory and chocolate while its appearance (when held up to a light source) reveals a surprisingly clear, crimson red tint. This is almost ironic as the French Vanilla BAM! K-Cups we reviewed earlier were a medium roast yet had a much darker color. Maybe this color difference has something to do with this coffee's organic nature? Speaking of which, sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference between organic and non-organic products… certain organic baked goods yield obvious differences in taste while organic fruits & vegetable often times taste identical to their non-organic brethren.
Cafe Pods has a very interesting coffee pod in both espresso (44mm) and coffee pod size (62mm). This pure 100% African Arabica coffee, is AA Estate Grade. This coffee has orangey undertones, and is all you would expect from an African coffee with a smooth subtlety and fantastic acidity. This is limited edition, and a one batch one roast so once its gone its gone.

First Impressions: Café Invento Single Serve Coffee Pod Brewer
We've unboxed the Cafe Invento earlier this week, and thought we'd share some of our impressions. Unboxing was really easy - with very few parts to deal with. Priming of the machine went well, and filling of the reservoir and getting the machine going was straight forward. The machine is very slim, but very wide. Also the finish on the machine is pretty stunning - both silky smooth, and also easy to wipe up. The Cafe Invento comes with both a crema multi-pod holder, and a tea pod holder. This thing makes frothy topped crema coffee very much like the Senseo.
The water reservoir is really slim,
and has a cool blue tinge of color to it.
The Cafe Invento also comes with two boxes of coffee pods - Sumatra and Columbian blends. Both are solid examples of the coffee you can expect from the Cafe Invento. Overall our only disappointment so far is the height of the brew head (no travel mugs here), and the fact the machine doesn't come with two small glass cups or the like to brew two cups of coffee as shown in the box shots and in the literature included. Expect a full review next week.
D+Caf Detects If You're Drinking Caffeinated Coffee Instead of Decaf
Sometimes you want to know if you're being duped with a cup of decaf over real coffee, and sometimes you just want to also look in the face of the person for 10+ years who tells you it's leaded coffee, and say, "Busted". D+caf test strips are strips of paper coated with antibodies that tell if you a beverage is properly decaffeinated, turning up blue lines if it's got more than 20mg of caffeine per 6oz serving. The strips are 98 percent accurate for detecting caffeine, plus you have to use them before you add anything else to your coffee tea, like milk or sugar.

Black Mountain Gold Costa Rican Gourmet Coffee Pods
We've been using our Bunn My Cafe lately to brew up this really yummy cup of Costa Rican Coffee. The coffee is both balanced and clean with rich notes of citrus and berry like flavors. We also get a faint chocolate aftertaste, but mostly the berry notes are pretty powerful. Black Mountain Gold was recently purchased by the Rogers Gourmet Coffee family, so we're really excited that the Black Mountain Gold brand of coffee pods will continue to grow and expand.
Review: Emeril's Vanilla Bean BAM! K-Cups for Keurig
Distributed by Timothy's World Coffees, Emeril's Vanilla Bean BAM! is one of 2 new Emeril's K-Cup flavors recently introduced to the single serve coffee market (we'll be reviewing Emeril's Organic French Quarter Roast in the coming weeks). Known mostly for his cooking shows on the Food Network and various food products available at most grocery stores, the coffee scene is a relatively new one for Emeril and his goal was to introduce a coffee which stood out among the rest as having a richer, heartier taste & character. This new vanilla flavor marks the first time he's gone with a medium roast vs. his usually darker varieties.
We chose the 5.25oz brew size on our Keurig one cup coffee maker to extract the full flavors, and were greeted with a strong French vanilla scent which seemed stronger than any other vanilla K-Cup we'd tried before. As a result, we were expecting a stronger vanilla flavor from this smaller brew size but were surprised at how subdued & mild it was. The sweet taste of vanilla was present but was struggling to balance the sour nature of the acidity. We thought there would have been more "BAM!" (so to speak) in the flavoring overall and it left us wanting to throw in a few dashes of vanilla extract. We understand some people will likely prefer less flavorings in their coffee, but when a product is marketed as "having enough BAM! for Emeril himself", the final result is rather disappointing.
Sick of trying to remember all those little things each morning over coffee? Try leaving yourself a note on these mugs. The mugs are available with four color tops - yellow, blue, red or green. They come with 3 sticks of chalk, so you won't have to steal any pieces from your kids. These mugs are hand wash only, but we expect the price of communication on your coffee cup is worth it.
We've been using the Keurig Milk Frother over the past two weeks, and have to say it's easy to use, clean up, and makes great frothed milk. You'll need only one essential ingredient - great skim milk for frothing. If you want to use other milk fat levels - you won't get great froth, but you will get whipped hot milk. There are two levels as well 150 ml for froth using skim milk, and 250 ml for hot milk. Both of these measure levels are marked inside the frother.
