keurigwalmart.jpg

Big news on the single serve coffee maker K-Cup front. Walmart and the Keurig business unit of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. (GMCR) have announced a new distribution of Keurig’s gourmet single-cup coffee brewers and patented K-Cup portion packs in over 3,000 Walmart stores, just in time for the gift-giving Mother’s Day holiday.

Walmart will carry Keurig’s Elite B40 Single-Cup Brewer and a variety of K-Cups® from Green Mountain Coffee, Gloria Jean’s, Timothy’s, Tully’s Coffee and Newman’s Own® Organics. Keurig Single Serve Coffee Machine Makes Appearances on Fringe and Southland

fringe_ink_aith.jpg

Shawn writes in that he's noticed 2 occurrences of Keurig machines appearing in primetime TV series this past week. We've noticed them as well - Fringe and Southland. Even members in the Single Serve Coffee Forums have noticed one of our favorite single serve coffee makers making guest appearances on these shows.

  • Fringe - Walter Bishop tries using a Keurig at FBI headquarters and claims it's "broken" when he can't figure out how to close the brewing chamber. We think the model was the B60 or B70... couldn't quite tell.
  • Southland = When Dewey calls his ex asking for help after a night of boozing gone wrong at a movie star's house, we see a Keurig in the background while she's talking to him on the phone, although it's not in focus. Think it was the same model as Fringe was using.

We have also learned that Walter from Fringe in the episode above likes a little cinnamon in his coffee. We're not big fans of it in ours, but it's a nice touch and makes it seem like he's really drinking some coffee.

MyPressi Twist - The Portable Espresso Maker

mypressitwist1.jpg

There's a new portable espresso and single serve coffee maker in town - the MyPressi Twist. Using a unique pneumatic engine, the sleek perfectly-portable mypressi TWIST eliminates the coffee-line wait, the high price tag for quality machinery and the on-the-road “where am I going to get my coffee” quandary. We'll just have to try it when we get our review unit, but we do see the parallels to another portable espresso maker - the Handpresso.

How does the MyPressi Twist work? To operate the mypressi TWIST, simply insert a cartridge into the pressure chamber, fill the basket with fresh ground coffee or a coffee pod, and fill the upper compartment with hot water. With a simple pull of the trigger the TWIST produces one or two shots of espresso perfection ready to be enjoyed alone, or as the base for any coffee beverage. The TWIST has an easy-to-clean design that is also dishwasher safe, ensuring even after months of use that there are no left over oils to oxidize or spoil subsequent shots.

Peekaboo Clear Coffee Table - Invisible Coffee Drinking Fun

peekabooclear.jpg

Playing peekaboo can be more interesting when adding hot coffee, and an acrylic clear coffee table. This transparent surface floats in the room without taking up permanent visual residency - think invisible coffee table. Thick half-inch molded acrylic is molded to coffee table perfection, but be careful - acrylic scratches so make sure and clean with mild soap and water, and then use a dry soft cloth for finishing.

Save The Planet One Coffee Tree at a Time with Kona Coffee Bean Tree Seeds

31aAnz1tBfL._SL500_AA226_.jpg

It's Earth Day, and we think the perfect way to celebrate is to plant a coffee tree. We found these coffee tree seeds thanks to our loyal reader Sheila who is very concerned with the environment. The Kona is the very popular coffee of Hawaii. Its a heavy bearing variety with excellent quality. One producing tree can provide 1 lb. of coffee, and we're sure it can clean the air while it makes said coffee. It has large, deep green, glossy leaves and white flowers, each lasting a few days, with a scent like jasmine. It can be grown as a houseplant in a bright position or in a conservatory.

We think if you spend $3.99 today, and then plant a Kona Tree in your yard or living room - you'll be helping out the planet, and you'll even get some amazing coffee. Happy Earth Day everyone!

Review: Starbucks VIA Ready Brew 10-oz. Tumbler

Review Single Serve CoffeeIMG_7830.jpg

Starbucks has entered the instant single serve coffee market with their Starbucks VIA Ready Brew 10-oz. Tumbler, and accompanying single serve coffee packets. In order to review this travel mug and instant coffee, we decided to test it out in the wild for a few mornings on our ride into the Single Serve Coffee headquarters. The Ready Brew packets fit inside the mug, and you'll need access to hot water when using this travel mug.

We didn't have any issues when prepping, as we have a hot water dispenser in our kitchen, but we expect some people to need to use this at work where your water cooler has instant hot or the like. Mixing the Ready Brew Italian Roast is pretty simple, but make sure you put the packet of coffee in prior to putting in the hot water. One of the things we do like about the tumbler design is the ability to store packets in the bottom, but as we will later disclose - this makes the bottom of the tumbler too large for most drink holders in your car.

IMO Single Serve Coffee Maker - Drink Coffee From a Robotic Arm

imo2_ppfOp_58.jpg

Expected to retail for $130 when it debuts, this single serve coffee maker called the IMO Coffee Maker is something truly different. It has been designed to enrich the users with a unique coffee making experience by having them position an arm of coffee to drink from. The device is able to make three cups of coffee without refilling the water reservoir. One of the most interesting features is an articulated arm that can be used in different positions to be used with containers of diverse heights such as tall travel mugs or shorter coffee mugs.

Review: Timothy’s Sugar Bush Maple K-Cups

Review Single Serve Coffee IMGP3246.jpg

With the introduction of Spring comes a tradition in the North-Eastern corners of the country known as visits to local maple sugar camps where one can enjoy all sorts of treats. We’ve seen everything from maple peanut brittle to maple caramel popcorn, but until recently we had yet to see any maple flavored coffees. Thankfully, Timothy’s noticed this as well and have been introducing their Sugar Bush Maple K-Cups each year as a result. We love anything maple around the Single Serve Coffee test kitchen and couldn’t wait to give this coffee a try since the maple scent was permeating through the unopened box.

We chose the 5.25oz brew size to extract the full flavors and were pleased to see the maple aroma fill the room (fond memories of the maple camp came flooding back). We were expecting a very sweet maple taste and were surprised by the initial bite of the acidity then somewhat disappointed to find that the maple flavoring was not as strong as we had hoped. We tore into another box only to find the same thing. Always willing to try anything with our coffees, we found a quick fix to this dilemma by adding a half-ounce shot of pure maple syrup to the bottom of the glass before brewing our next cup and were immediately pleased with the results.

Review: Terra Keramik Handcrafted Cappuccino Cups

Review Single Serve CoffeeIMG_7956.jpg

These cappuccino cups are for the serious coffee lover who values a cup that combines functional design, handcrafted quality and a certain "fun" factor. We know how fun they can be - bright, interesting, and amazing to look at each morning, and always keeping our cappuccino warm until the last sip. Baristas consider their cappuccino cups to have the right size, shape and thickness to create a perfect cappuccino and retain the heat of the espresso and steamed milk, and from our experience - they're right.

Each cup holds a 5-ounce cappuccino which as you can see below is perfect for a lungo cappuccino from any Nespresso single serve coffee maker. As we stated with the coffee mug we reviewed earlier, we love the accented platinum band, and each cup is hand-signed by the artist.

IMG_7953.jpg
These cappuccino cups go great
with any Nespresso single serve coffee maker.

Note: These cups are not suitable for a microwave (pre-heat the cups either on top of your espresso machine or by filling with hot water).

Philips Recalls Senseo Single Serve Coffee Makers - Models HD7810, HD7820 and HD7832 Affected

00000122722-PhilipsSenseoSupremeHD7832-large.jpg

We've just gotten word that Philips is recalling Senseo single serve coffee makers with the model numbers HD7810, HD7820 and HD7832 produced from July 2006-November 2008. These recalls effect both Polish made and Chinese made Senseo units. You can use the link below to input the details of your model and date of production to see if your unit is affected.

Philips has identified a safety problem which affects a number of Senseo® coffee makers produced in Poland from July 2006 to November 2008 and for units made in China from July 2007 to November 2008. Philips is committed to the well-being of its consumers and has decided to voluntarily recall the affected Senseo® machines and offer replacement units to consumers.

The product type-numbers affected are:

HD7810, HD7820 and HD7832

Unaddressed calcification in the coffeemaker from use of hard or medium water, when combined with an external electrical fault, can lead to obstruction of the overpressure release system causing boilers to suddenly separate possibly leading to injury. Per year, the risk is less than three per million and there have been no reported cases in the United States.

(If the type number or production date of your appliance does not appear in the form below, your Senseo® coffee machine is safe to use)

Thoughts About the Nescafe Dolce Gusto Single Serve Coffee Maker

wtb_img.jpg

We've been thinking a great deal about the Krups Nescafe Dolce Gusto machine as of late. It's one of our favorite single serve coffee machines from last year after we spent many weeks reviewing it, and lately we've had a resurgence in use in the Single Serve Coffee test kitchen. We love how easy it is to use, and how many different types of drinks it can make. One of the key features is milk based drinks like lattes and cappuccinos - and they're both really tasty. If you haven't had a chance to read our review - check it out here. The other main draw is how different it looks on your countertop - just different.

Key Features include:

  • 15-bar pressure system (similar to coffeehouse machines)
  • Custom Control Lever, combined with airtight capsules, makes for very fresh and perfectly extracted espresso and coffees
  • KRUPS® Thermoblock technology heats the water in less than one minute
  • All smart coffee capsules feature only 100% Arabica roast and ground coffee

Review: Southern Pecan K-Cups from Green Mountain Coffee

Review Single Serve Coffee IMGP3194.jpg

With the sheer multitude of K-Cup varieties on the market today, it’s almost impossible for us to review every single one (despite our best efforts), so we decided to follow-up our recent GMCR Wild Mountain Blueberry review with another one of Green Mountain’s classic flavored K-Cups... Southern Pecan.

We chose the 5.25oz brew size to extract the full flavors and it didn’t take long for the room to fill up with a strong scent of sweet buttered praline pecans. We could almost taste the real thing just by inhaling the scent, amazing. This was by far one of the best scented coffees we’d tried in a while and it had us wishing that Glade would make this scent as one of their scented candles or plug-ins. Hmm… maybe that’s a market GMCR could explore?

Timothy's Mexican Organic K-Cup Coffee

tim_mexi_large.jpg

We love the flavor of this Mexican Organic coffee from Timothy's. Each cup of Timothy's Mexican Organic K-Cup Coffee is sweet and spicy, with a surprisingly smoky and smooth finish. We've been drinking this for the past few weeks, and find it to work as a wake up cup of single serve coffee. It has a little zing with the provided zang that gets your morning going.

Timothy's Mexican Organic K-Cups will work in any Keurig single serve coffee machines. Priced $9.99 at Timothy's Mexican Organic K-Cup Coffee for a 24 count box and $21 for 48 at Timothy's Mexican Organic K-Cup Coffee.

New Tully's Deals Means More Stores and More K-Cups

Wiki-tullys-coffee.jpg

With the recent acquisition of Tully's by Green Mountain Coffee, lots of readers have been wondering what it all means. One thing is for sure - it means Tully's will be around moving forward, and according to the Seattle PI it also means more coffee, stores, and other goodness. We can't wait to see more k-cups being offered in more places as well.

For Tully's Coffee customers, the news on Monday means no change -- Tully's cafes will still serve the same drinks, employ the same people and offer the chain's signature free Wi-Fi access.

The sale offers a lifeline to the financially struggling coffee company, which faced bankruptcy or a significant scaling back of operations if the sale had not gone through. In a federal filing last year, Tully's said that it had years of operating losses since its founding in 1992 and an accumulated deficit of $102 million.

About 45 Tully's corporate employees will remain at the Seattle headquarters at the former Rainier Brewery. The rest -- about 80 people who roast, package and distribute coffee -- now work for Green Mountain and will move to a nearby roasting and packaging plant.

Review: Terra Keramik Handcrafted 8oz Coffee Mugs

Review from Single Serve Coffee.com - Coffee Pod Reviewsgreenmug_terra.jpg

One might say it's hard to review a coffee mug, but after using the Terra Keramik Handcrafted 8oz Coffee Mugs for the past week - we think differently. These are not your average coffee mugs as each is handcrafted in Switzerland by Terra Keramik, handpainted, and rimmed with a platinum glaze. The large mug holds 8 ounces and can be used for coffee or tea. This mug is recommended for coffee, espresso-based milk beverages (such as lattes), hot chocolate, and steeping tea directly in the mug.

IMG_7883.jpg
A simply perfect coffee mug. We love the platinum
glaze and bright green color.

What we like is how each mug is characterized by a simple and clean design, and the large mug has beautifully glazed outside and inside surfaces in your choice of eight different colors (ours for the review was bright green). The mugs are also lead-free and cadmium-free glazes for an absolute food-safe finish, as well as dishwasher safe.

You can feel the quality, and workmanship in each mug. The size is just right to grip around the base, or you can pick it up by the ring. We found ourselves feeling like royalty after a week with ours.

Review: Nespresso CitiZ Single Serve Coffee and Espresso Maker

Review from Single Serve Coffee.com - Coffee Pod Reviewsnespresso-citiz-machine.jpg

Nespresso was kind of enough to send us the new CitiZ brewer ahead of launch to review. The new Nespresso CitiZ espresso machine range takes its inspiration from the streets - literally - of major cities from around the globe. The colors of well-known focal points and objects, the design and shapes of buildings and landmarks, and the urban vibe and attitude of cities led Nespresso designers to create a new generation of Nespresso machines. The design is not only an improvement in looks but in the footprint of the machine as well. Compared to the Nespresso C100T Essenza - the Nespresso CitiZ takes up much less space in width, and has some new features that make it a standout.

This Nespresso CitiZ machines come in the following designs and feature sets:

  • Nespresso CitiZ - a single-head automatic espresso machine
  • Nespresso CitiZ & Milk - a single-head automatic espresso machine with a built-in fresh milk frother for cappuccinos and lattes
  • Nespresso CitiZ & Co. (not available in North America) - the first-ever double-head machine designed for at-home use

IMG_7843.jpg
The spent capsule storage is improved and see through.

We tested the Nespresso CitiZ single-head automatic single serve coffee and espresso machine for this review in a stunning red case.
