Darth Vader Latte Art

LatteArt4Small-thumb-550x397-75988.jpg

We're pretty big Star Wars fans here at Single Serve Coffee. We've been scouring the internet for some latte art fun and found this pretty amazing Darth Vader. We've yet to dabble in latte art, but now we're thinking of firing up the Tassimo and making our own Star Wars themed latte.

For a look at how to make a simple design, check out this tutorial or go to YouTube and search on "latte art." We'll let you know how our efforts go over the next few weeks.

Green Mountain's Keurig Sues Over Single-Serve K-Cup Patents

rogers_gmcr.jpg

Green Mountain Coffee Roaster's Keurig unit sued a Rogers Gourmet Coffee and Tea. Rogers is accused of infringing three patents related to single-serving coffee cartridges, after releasing an after market K-Cup called "OneCup".

According to the complaint filed this week in federal court in Boston, Rogers offers single-serving beverage cartridges that infringe the Keurig patents. Additionally, Reading, Massachusetts-based Keurig complains that the Rogers website states that the company’s "One Cup" product can be used in a Keurig single-serving coffee brewer. Keurig asked the court to bar Rogers from further infringement, and for awards of money damages, Rogers’ profits attributable to the alleged infringement, attorney fees and litigation costs.

We expected a case given how close the OneCup is to a K-Cup. Given Keurig has a variety of patents, we're pretty sure they'll have many options to discuss when this case goes to court or if it's settled.

OneCup Keurig Compatible Coffee Packs from Rogers Gourmet Coffee and Tea

  k_cup_one_cup_coffee.jpg

Rogers Gourmet Coffee and Tea Market has released a set of four OneCup Keurig compatible coffee packs. Simply called OneCup they have also been called in the press - compatible coffee packs or pods. This is the second aftermarket K-Cup like coffee offering, but unlike the Grove Square compatible K-Cups which uses instant coffee, the OneCup Keurig compatible coffee packs have a mesh bottom so they get around the puncture patent Keurg currently has on K-Cups until September 2012 as the coffee passes right through them with no puncture needed.

We're not sure how good or bad these new OneCup coffee pods are from Rogers, but we've put in an order to get a set and try out the four flavors - OneCup Organic Rainforest, Fogchaser, OneCup French Roast, and OneCup French Roast Decaf. We have info and shots of each flavor after the jump.

It's Friday here at Single Serve Coffee, and even the double stuffed K-Cups aren't hitting the mark. We need to just get some motivation to get through the day and a little inspiration. When we are feeling the need we like to watch a little K-Cup tossing.

Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Opens in New York

coffeebean.jpg

The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf has opened its doors in NYC and New Yorkers don't have to travel to the west coast for some CBTL coffee. Referred to as "The Bean" by in-the-know customers and publications alike, Coffee Bean's NYC location is in the heart of the Fashion District at 39th and Broadway. We've never ourselves been to a CBTL store, and we're also wondering if they have any of the new CBTL single serve coffee machines to sell in store. If you're in New York and can stop by - please send along some pictures - we'd love to see what Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf has in store.

500 Million Iced Coffee Drinks Ordered Every Year

Adco-popup.jpg

The NYTimes.com states that in 2010, Americans ordered 500 million iced coffee drinks in restaurants and cafes, up from 400 million in 2006, according to data from the market research firm NPD Group. And you know who's leading the way in the single serve coffee world? Keurig. They currently have 2 different iced varieties and plan to make more over the coming year.

There's a ton of other interesting tidbits in this article on the iced coffee world including:

  • On July 12, Starbucks will introduce Iced Coffee Blend, whole-bean coffee available in its stores for $13 for a pound. The blend, which is the same that Starbucks has used for years to brew iced coffee in its stores, has never been sold as a whole bean blend.
  • Seattle's Best Coffee, a subsidiary of Starbucks, also has a whole-bean blend for ice coffee, Summer Brew, for $13 a pound, which is beginning to appear in its shops.
  • Stumptown Coffee Roasters, meanwhile, recently began bottling cold-brewed coffee in squat 10.5-ounce amber bottles, which it calls Stubbies. The bottles are sold for $3.50 in the company's coffee shops both in Portland, Ore., where the company is based, and in New York.

And how big is the single serve coffee market and Keurig/Green Moutain Coffee getting?

  • Single-cup coffee systems like Keurig, which was developed in 1998, and newer ones including the Nescafé Dolce Gusto, Senseo and Flavia, are now in 7 percent of households and have been growing at an average annual rate of 1 percentage point since 2005, according to the National Coffee Association.
  • In 2010, total revenue for Keurig brewers and accessories was $330.8 million, a gain of 67 percent over 2009, while revenue from the portion packs reached $834.4 million, 103 percent more than in 2009.
