Coffee-Powered Car Breaks World Record

Coffeepoweredcar 2013
No that's not the Doc from Back to the Future
in the back of the coffee powered truck.

TIME.com has  pretty interesting feature on a converted Ford pickup truck called the Coffee Car Mark 2 which is the world’s fastest coffee-powered vehicle. This is how they did the coffee to powering the truck translation.

  • The owner installed a charcoal stove on the car, which breaks down coffee-bean chaff  into carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
  • The gas is cooled and filtered, and the hydrogen is used to power a modified gasoline engine.
  • The coffee car hit a top speed of 65 m.p.h. in the presence of a Guinness adjudicator at Woodford Airfield in Manchester, England, on Feb. 19.

Perhaps this could be the solution we need to finally rid ourselves of not only by-products of coffee making, but other things as well. The only problem we see - emissions are not going to past muster with everyone driving around with coffee powered cars. :-) Full video after the jump.

Wireless Charging Will Get Decided by a Coffee Cup

Over at the The Verge there's talk of yet another competing standard being decided by yes - a coffee cup. Back in the day there was both RF and Wi-Fi on laptops - competing standards of wireless networking ultimately decided when Starbucks rolled out Wi-Fi nationwide to 2000+ coffee shops. Now there's another standard at war - wireless charging. We've seen this new wireless charging already being tested in Boston Starbucks, and we know if they roll it out nationwide yet again the PMA (Power Matters Alliance) will probably win over the other wireless charging formats. Right now you can use the Powermat at some Starbucks and it's presence alone made us curious about wireless charging for the first time.

Who do you think will win? We'd put our money on whoever Starbucks backs, and right now that looks like the Powermat.

Make sure and check it out - our favorite is probably the foam kitty crawling out of a coffee mug. We're suckers for cats and coffee.

Update:Our forums has a detailed post with all the details on each of the articles from Coffee Week on NPR.

Espresso Manifesto Short Animated Film by Shaun Pitz

Over at Kickstarter Shaun Pitz is working very hard to show the battle line between coffee and espresso in a new short film.

"Espresso Manifesto is a seven minute animated film that reconsiders the origin of coffee through a colorful world of fantasy and science fiction.  A mysterious cafe set beside an ocean of grass, a silent observer, metallic serpents, rolling robots, and one lingering question: Why is coffee just so delicious? The answer may be more sinister than you think. "

Shaun works in a coffee shop by day and has been animating and creating the film at night. We're thinking given the trailer a bit Shaun has been a bit hopped up on espresso and coffee the entire time.

Caribou Coffee Won't Do In Store Coffee Shops at JCPenney

Chasteen JC+penny 012612 298

Well JCPenney can't even catch a coffee break from Caribou Coffee. Caribou had announced a potential partnership about six months ago, but now it's not so interested in being in the in store coffee brand for JCPenney. We thought the cafe idea and in store coffee would have made a nice splash for JCPenney customers. Perhaps they can attract another brand?
