Coca-Cola spent $2.4 billion between February 2014 and February 2015 building a 16% stake in Keurig Green Mountain Inc. That makes the 25.9 million shares of Keurig that Coke purchased are worth just under $1.4 billion after Keurig’s stock has plummeted in recent weeks.
Keurig needs its KOLD machine to be a hit or Keurig’s market cap will continue to fall. KOLD is due to hit shelves next month, and everyone's holding their breath to see if consumers will want it or it might be another VUE or Keurig 2.0.

Given the recent news of disappointing earnings with a 27 percent drop in sales this quarter, Keurig Green Mountain is going to compensate the loss by cutting 330 jobs. 200 of those jobs will be in their Vermont location with another 130 jobs at other offices.
We would never have imagined that Keurig would ever need to layoff anyone given the success in the single serve coffee world. Keurig simply dominates the single serve coffee market, but if you expect profits to keep going up and up and up then it’s no surprise this is happening. Our hearts go out to those possible affected by these cuts, and hopefully it’s a temporary bump in an otherwise non-bumpy road.

Actually coffee sales are up in the United States, but with over 25% of consumers in the US owning a Keurig single serve coffee maker coffee consumption is down. The reason is the “sink” is no longer consuming large amounts of coffee brewed in drip makers. Consumers are using the single serve coffee they drink, and quite honestly the amount of the decline isn’t that much - coffee consumption will drop in 2015-16 from 24 million 60kg bags to 23.7 million.
So wasting less coffee is a great thing, and with single serve coffee being a bit more expensive it makes sense that coffee sales are up. It’s interesting to see this tipping point in consumption around the 25% mark as well.

The Keurig 2.0 K200 Brewer has been rolling out to store shelves over the past few weeks, and we got this picture at our local Target in Watertown, MA. The K200 features 9 brew sizes (including carafe sizes), and a large 40 oz. Water Reservoir. There’s even strength control, and a Black and White Touch Display. We also really love this brewer’s compact size. Given the price point of ~$120 (we’ve seen it as low as $109) we expect this to be a big seller for Green Mountain. We just wish they’d get rid of the DRM.

The title kind of says it all but in reality a Vancouver-based company has come up with 100 per cent compostable coffee pods. They’ve also patented the process.
Why? K-Cups right now are not compostable and are piling up in land fills. A Mother Jones report said the number of K-Cups produced in in 2013 was enough to wrap around the planet 10.5 times. ERG.
G-Kups are held together with a bamboo and sugar cane sleeve, with a biodegradable polymer lining that can withstand boiling water. The sleeve has always been the issue - not being able to hold up to the temperature of the water so the brewing process holds up.
G-Kups aren’t out on the market yet, but let’s hope they get to market soon.
