It’s bold and it’s always exciting - Café Bustelo coffee is now available in 18 count boxes for $10.99 at Target. The Cafe Bustelo K-Cups are Keurig brewed and come in two flavors:
- 100% Columbian
- Estilo Espresso
It’s been quite awhile since we’ve had Cafe Bustelo anything, but our memories of coffee at friends in Tucson makes our mouth water. Let us know how good they are after you pick them up and brew a few cups.

When we first got into the world of single serve coffee over 10 years ago, we knew that as time progressed, we’d eventually start seeing more and more brands of coffee become available for various single serve coffee brewers such as the Keurig & Tassimo platforms. It would seem that when Keurig’s copyright patents expired a few years ago, the floodgates opened and along came a surge of unlicensed knock-offs and competing 3rd-party products.
We knew Kraft had locked-up their T-Disc patents and that the Tassimo would be shielded from knock-off T-Discs but never did we think we’d see Kraft making K-Cup knock-offs. That was the first major shockwave to spread across the unlicensed K-Cup universe and was the first snowflake to fall in K-Cup hell. Over the months that followed, we saw a tidal wave of products which were outstanding to the point of rivalling licensed K-Cup quality while inevitably, we also saw products that performed and tasted like total junk (a quick look through our review archives will clearly point them out).

Over at Engadget TreeHouse Foods is estimating it will only take a couple of months to crack the DRM protection making brewing non-licensed K-Cups in the Keurig 2.0 impossible. The upcoming Keurig 2.0 will have cameras that read tags and limit what you brew to official brews only. The discovery should keep TreeHouse selling and others selling unofficial pods that cost less than Keurig's, and it could lead to making other brewers copy protection useless as well.
Our analysis indicates that under any circumstance that it will be a matter of months, not years, before we replicate the technology for the cups or the pods. And we expect that of the five new single-serve coffee brand-name appliances that are coming to the market in the fourth quarter, at least some of those will replicate the technology as well.
Quartz also has some more details regarding the lawsuit from TreeHouse Foods, and their take on cracking the DRM.

The Keurig Mini Banana Yellow K-Cup Brewer is the perfect accent to your kitchen. Not only can it make a great cup of single serve coffee, but the color will make a splash amongst your not so interesting appliances. The brewer includes a 6 count K-Cup variety pack, and can make a 6, 8, or 10 ounce cup of tea or coffee. Brews in under two minutes, and since there’s no reservoir the coffee is fresh every time you pour new water into the brewer. You can read our full review of the Keurig Mini K-Cup brewer here.

In a move that only serves to reinforce the idea that they’re after just about every coffee chain & coffee manufacturer on the market, KGM decided to form a partnership with The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (CBTL) chain of coffee shops to introduce some of their signature coffees into the K-Cup format several months ago. Now that those flavors are starting to trickle through the retail market, we decided to try their first flavored variety: CBTL Toasted Ameretto K-Cups.
The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (for brevity sake, we’ll just call them CBTL) got their start in 1963 when they opened their first coffee shop/cafe in Brentwood, California. Billing themselves as the oldest & largest privately held specialty coffee and tea retailer in the United States, the company has since opened stores in many different states and internationally as well. While they may not be that well known on the East Coast, they’re popular on the West Coast and have gained quite the fan following over the years.
