All the systems worked flawlessly with one exception. The FrancisFrancis X8 developed a pump problem almost immediately. One email to Illy though and they immediately shipped out a replacement unit as well as a FedEx Return Label. It took two days for shipping and the FedEx delivery person picked up the old one. Service was fast, sure and the replacement machine has worked perfectly.

Which one to chose depends on your individual priorities.
If counter space is the biggest issue, then the Nespresso machines have the smallest foot print, followed by the CBTL Caffitaly Contata, the Illy FrancisFrancis X8 and the Lavazza LB 1010 is the largest, about the same footprint as my cutting board. The Nespresso is also the lightest of all, by a considerable margin.

Baltimore in the late 40s and 50s was a Blue Collar town of ethic neighborhoods, Polish, Jewish, Black, Greek, German ... and then there was Little Italy. Around Christmas time each year Dad would take us all for lunch at Di Pasquale's. We'd sit with Mom at a little table while Dad ordered for us at the Deli and we all got stuff we liked. I'd always get a bowl of Pasta Fagioli and an Italian sandwich and my little brother always wanted fried chicken but they never had it so he would get the chicken with provolone and Mom always got one of their salads that had grapes and tomatoes and cheese and we had a plate of olives, green and black and big and small and each one tasting different and all the people there were tall and had wavy black hair and talked in a strange language.
But it was after lunch that was the best. They had a big cake called Panettone that was round and tall and they would slice out a big wedge and Dad would cut it into pieces for us and it had raisins and dried orange and nuts in it and my brother and I would get hot cocoa and Mom and Dad got espresso in little white cups and on the ride back home we sometimes fell asleep.

We've prepared for you a multi-part article that gives a comparison of the Nespresso, Lavazza, FrancisFrancis X8, and CBTL (Coffee Bean Tea and Leaf) espresso and single serve coffee systems (a special thanks goes out to JAR for all of his efforts on these articles). We'll have 4 experience articles, followed by a conclusions about all four systems. In this article Part I we compare the four systems to each other.
Comparing Espresso and Single Serve Coffee Capsule Systems
Prepackaged single serve espresso system are becoming increasingly popular. They offer consistent dosing, tamping, easy cleanup, reliable and most of all, repeatable performance. There are two basic formats, the ESE pod and capsules. In this series of comparisons I will be looking at four of the capsule systems available today.
Probably the best known example is the system from Nespresso.
Nespresso is one of the Nestlé's companies and they do a great job of marketing their product and in their personal customer service. They sell directly and through a series of Boutiques found in many major cities. Online or phone ordering is easy, their people are polite and knowledgeable and delivery is fast. If you call them you can even specify a preferred carrier if one gives better service in your area.

Today Green Mountain Coffee and Lavazza announced not only a stock purchase deal of $250 million dollars, but also the intent to co-develop single serve coffee and espresso machines. They are working together with the intent to reach a further agreement pursuant to which GMCR and Lavazza will cooperate to develop and Lavazza will manufacture new single-serve espresso machines and single-serve espresso capsules designed for use with such machines.
These co-developed machines would complement GMCR's line of Keurig single-cup coffee brewers. It is not anticipated that any of these co-developed machines and/or capsules will be available for the marketplace prior to GMCR's fiscal year 2013. The further agreement also may provide GMCR the ability to distribute, market and sell existing coffee espresso single-cup machines utilizing Lavazza's espresso technology for in-home use in the United States and Canada.
We think this not only means single serve espresso, but also more coffee technology as well. Imagine a high end Keurig K-Cup brewer with frothing technology, and the ability to use both K-Cups and the new capsules? Your imagination is the limit, but we'll bet given how much we've enjoyed the Lavazza offerings this can only mean great things in the years to come. We'll be covering this here at Single Serve Coffee and check out our sister site Single Serve Espresso.

Café-Razzi has just introduced Lavazza Tierra in an espresso capsule. Lavazza Tierra! is a sustainable development project aimed at combining product quality with improved living conditions for some small scale coffee- growing communities. This is achieved by providing them with modern coffee-growing equipment and the right instruments to cultivate and market coffee by means of environmentally-friendly techniques. The new capsule has been dubbed the "green capsule" not because of it's color but because of it's mission Tierra! Is Rainforest Alliance Certified.
Tierra! is an excellent, 100% Arabica product characterized by aromatic notes and a floral sweetness. Made using the green coffees from farming communities that produce prized coffees bearing exotic, far-off names: Yanesha of Nagazu (Alto Churrumazu - Peru), La Fortuna (Cusuco Park - Honduras) and Villa Esperanza (Huila Valley - Colombia) to name a few.
The Tierra capsules will work in your office or home, use either the LavazzaBlue Pininfarina Pro (LB2210) and Pininfarina Home (LB1010) machines.

Café-Razzi just introduced a true double shot espresso capsule. With an unprecedented 11.5 grams of the finest espresso blend, this capsule will energize the most discriminating espresso or double Americano single serve coffee drinker. The BiDose capsule is basically the same blend as the Intenso capsule originally launched in 2005 but with 40% more coffee. It's especially popular with restaurants as they'll use it as a true double shot or split it as two single shots (with an accessory fitting for their LavazzaBlue system).
These BiDose espresso capsules will work in your office or home, use either the LavazzaBlue Pininfarina Pro (LB2210) and Pininfarina Home (LB1010) machines.

Café-Razzi just introduced a new line up of teas and cocoas for the Lavazza Blue System in addition to the single serve espresso capsules. In contrast to other single serve alternatives, the Lavazza Blue is the only system besides the Tassimo that makes a great espresso, American coffee, tea or cocoa. The K Cup and Flavia systems make a good traditional American style filter coffee, flavored coffee, tea and hot chocolate, but lack high pressure steam to make a true espresso, cappuccino or latte. Nespresso makes a good espresso, but falls short on teas and hot chocolate, but they do have the Lattissima system that does make an amazing latte.
The Tea line up consists of Black, Lemon, Green, Green Fusion, Mint, Chamomile, Fruit and Berry offering a choice of regular and decaffeinated blends. The cocoa is dark rich and super easy to make. It comes as a duo pack of cocoa powder and milk capsules. These new Teas and Cocoa will work in your office or home, use either the LavazzaBlue Pininfarina Pro (LB2210) and Pininfarina Home (LB1010) machines. The strength of the LavazzaBlue system is still the espresso, but it’s great to know you can also make a delicious tea and cocoa whenever you want as well.

Lavazza just introduced a new line up to their popular single serve espresso capsules, and Café-Razzi was kind enough to send along a some samples for us to try here at Single Serve Coffee. For traditional American coffee style drinking, Lavazza now has Americano capsules so you can enjoy a long 12 oz cup without sacrificing taste.
We've been drinking the following new Lavazza Blue coffee capsules:
- BUONGIORNO Amabile - Full bodied to get your morning started
- BUONLAVORO Delicato - Pleasant and aromatic to accompany your working day
- BUONASERA Soave - Decaffeinated to enjoy later in the day)
All of these capsules are considered Americano Capsules made for the Lavazza Blue Espresso system. These newly available coffee selections are the same great coffee blends as the LavazzaBlue Dolce, Intenso and Decaffeniato, but with a coarser grind that will easily pour a 12oz cup. In your office or home, use either the Lavazza Blue Pininfarina Pro (LB2210), or the Pininfarina Home (LB1010) machine.
How good are these new Americano capsules? The crema on a 12 oz cup is nearly as good as on a short espresso. Café-Razzi also makes a 10% donation to the Susan G. Komen breast cancer cure foundation on all sales of Amabile Americano Capsules.

It's been a busy month of new machines here at Single Serve Coffee. We've featured the Cuisinart SS-1 Cup-O-Matic single serve coffee maker, and the new Breville BKC600XL Gourmet Single Cup Brewer. We also wanted to throw one more single serve coffee maker into the mix - the new new compact Lavazza Pininfarina Blue LB1010 Home espresso maker. Priced at $379, this is the most affordable Lavazza machine yet for the home that uses the patented Lavazza coffee, tea, and hot drink capsules (you can read our review of the larger Pininfarina from Lavazza here).
So far we really like the smaller Lavazza Pininfarina Blue LB1010 Home espresso maker. The machine is about half the size of the larger Lavazza Blue machine, and also a lot less power hungry. The water reservoir is smaller, but given the type of drinks you'll likely make - espresso, cappuccinos, and lattes, the smaller size hasn't bothered us. We've also been making quite a few lattes and cappuccinos.

Finally "true" coffee on Senseo!! Or at least that's what we're lead to believe here at Single Serve Coffee. We got word of these new coffee pods from reader Christian, who has just travelled back from Europe and picked up the Lavazza Allegro coffee pods for Senseo and thinks they're pretty good. We'll be pinging our sources overseas to see if we can get some ourselves, and hopefully they're as good as they claim.
These coffee pods will work great in your Senseo, Bunn My Cafe, Melitta One:One, simplehuman, Krups 1010 , GPOD, Home Cafe and other single serve coffee pod makers.

We've really been enjoying the Lavazza Blue single serve coffee system over the last few months thanks to the folks at Cafe Razzi. They've just finished up a new video that showcases the coffee and espresso from the Lavazza Blue. The Lavazza Blue is really called the "Pininfarina Pro" and is designed with a patented brewing mechanism to match the coffee capsules and assures a perfect cup of coffee each time. The machine makes both coffee drinks and espresso based drinks.
This video does a great job of showing the features of the Lavazza Blue and if you need more info you can read our full review here...
