Well, it's that time of the year again, where we survived the latest round of #PumpkinSpiceEverything and just about every store in visible sight started popping up Christmas trees the day after Halloween. We're a bit old fashioned and think that Christmas season shouldn't start until December 1st, but apparently not everyone thinks the way we do. One thing we can however ALL agree upon... we love that this time of year also brings about Nespresso's Variations line-up of flavored espressos & coffees.
Always willing to try something different, this year's theme for 2017 has been dubbed the Confetto series and revolves around various confectionary candy & flavors. Since now both the OriginalLine AND the VertuoLine have their own Variations, we've decided to do yet another MEGA Review of both all in one shot (pun intended).

A quick foreword before we begin… while we’ve been sticking to the new “Quickview” format lately for most of our reviews, there were so many things in this lineup that we opted to write a bit of a misnomer… a long quickview… a MEGA Review, if you will. Rest assured we’ll be returning to the Quickview format in the coming weeks. Without further delay, let’s move on to the review below.
As the holidays are quickly approaching, we decided to check out what has become a yearly tradition… Nespresso’s Variations flavored espressos. Each November, the company creates a theme and derives flavors based on it. While the themes seem mostly to revolve around desserts, nuts, candied items or natural flavors (cherry, vanilla bean, etc) there has only been one instance since Nespresso started introducing flavored espressos where they decided to add the flavors to their permanent lineup instead of making them limited editions only available for a few months (Ciocatino, Caramelito & Vanilio were the winners).

Nespresso is launching a new range of 'barista style' coffee machines with brushed stainless steel exteriors. The design comes from Breville - who for the staff at Single Serve Coffee also designed one of the best working and looking K-Cup machines. The machine will be available in Australia first with a range of machines that allow users to choose their preferred milk texture and temperature via multiple milk foam textures. You can select these different milk textures and temperatures via an LCD panel and use an automatic want developed by Breville.
Here are the key features:
- 7 customisable coffee settings including Espresso, Lungo, Ristretto, Flat White, Latte, Cappuccino and Macchiato
- Adjustable automatic milk texturing to make a Flat White, Cappuccino, or Latte creating ‘micro foam’ which is essential for latte art (8 textures for Creatista Plus, 4 textures for Creatista)
- Adjustable milk temperature (11 temperatures for Creatista Plus, 5 temperatures for Creatista)
- Cool touch steam wand with auto purge for fast and easy cleaning Intuitive TFT display offering step-by-step assistance for coffee personalisation and maintenance
- Fast heat up (3 seconds for Creatista Plus, 10 seconds for Creatista)
- Automatic power off after 10 minutes of non-use
The Nespresso Creatista Plus and Creatista will be available in Australia from October 31 for an RRP of $799 and $699, respectively. You can check out more details at Nespresso's website.

Nespresso has announced it will sell Cuban coffee in the U.S. for the first time in half a century. Citing recent regulatory changes in the U.S. that now allow independent Cuban entrepreneurs to export their coffee to the U.S., Nespresso says it will make coffee made from the Granma and Santiago de Cuba available at Nespresso retailers starting in the fall of 2016. Importantly, the Nespresso Cuban coffee, which is being called Cafecito de Cuba, will only be available to make in the company’s specialized Nespresso OriginalLine machines.

Europe appears to be winning the variety/selection war against North America
Do you speak a foreign language and can easily read foreign text? Have you ever taken the time to browse the different global sites which a manufacturer might have in place? If so, chances are you’ve discovered an ugly truth when it comes to what is being offered over there compared to here… the truth that some countries have a MUCH better selection of drinks and an even nicer selection of machines vs. what is offered this side of the pond here in the US and Canada.
Why is this? Is it because a manufacturer has one of those countries as its home base of operations? Is it because sales are more robust in those countries than elsewhere in the world? Is it due to regional preferences? Quite possibly, yes to all of the above but there are likely other factors at play of which we’re unaware.
While it can seem unfair and is quite infuriating at times, especially when you have a very minuscule selection in your country and another country has a selection which would take months to try out, we have a feeling most of our readers probably aren’t even aware of just how crazy of a difference there can be from one country to the next. As a result, consider this a form of PSA if you will… just don’t blame us when you feel like going all Office Space on your single serve machine with a baseball bat after reading this.
Let’s have a look at some of the more common manufacturers who offer their machines/pods in North America, the difference in drinks & machines in some countries and what tactics they are using in such regards (be they positive or negative). For brands that aren’t widely sold in Europe, we’ll compare the selection between USA & Canada instead.

Aeroccino 4 Titanium milk frother makes 2 types of hot foam, hot milk and cold foam. With one single whisk you can now do all your preparations; just pour in the milk and select the desired button to obtain, in no time, a divine milk froth for your favourite recipes. On top, the Aeroccino4 is also dishwasher proof to ease cleaning.
We like the design of this Aeroccino as it comes with a handy base that has built in buttons. The design update is also really nice and will match your Nespresso machine with style.

SH just noticed that Loblaw (a major Canadian grocery chain company) has introduced their own line-up of value-priced Nespresso compatible capsules via their President's Choice store brand. It would seem they're trying to emulate the base flavors from Nespresso's Grand Cru line with a few decafs, various intensity roasts and a lungo.
While we're used to seeing store brands for K-Cups, SH thinks this is the first time he's seen store brand Nespresso knock-offs.
From SH: President’s Choice bills itself as "premium-quality substitutions" to national brands and upon my first impressions of their Potente blend, it would seem this is a viable selection for those looking for a slightly cheaper alternative.
Taste was strong & robust with a nice kick overall while the crema produced seemed decent (although not as thick as a normal Nespresso capsule). The capsules themselves are made of a thick colored plastic and come boxed in two matte foil sleeve.

The German city of Hamburg last month introduced a ban on buying 'certain polluting products or product components’. The ban includes specific terms for 'equipment for hot drinks in which portion packaging is used' - specifically singling out the 'Kaffeekapselmaschine', or coffee capsule machine, which accounts for one in eight coffees sold in Germany.
Nespresso has 14,000 pod pickup locations in 31 countries, capable of processing 80 percent of all the capsules they make, but they don't say how many they actually collect.
The point with coffee pods isn't about recycling - it's about cutting down on the amount of stuff that we need to throw away or recycle."

I'm still on my trip in Ireland and this morning in Dublin proper. I'm pretty happy with the coffee choice at the Dublin office - a Gemini Nespresso business class single serve espresso maker.
I went with the darker of the roasts, and I am really impressed with the quality of the coffee. Dark and rich results from the small Nespresso disk, and the texture was silky and smooth. The office is also near Trinity College in Dublin making a little stroll out into Dublin and the College possible this morning.

Rosso Coffee prides themselves on producing Nespresso compatible capsules with a high premium quality coffee that works in your Nespresso coffee maker. You can also cut out the expensive call centers or shops and get your coffee capsules right away.
Their pods have been engineered to match all Original Line Nespresso machines, including Essenza, Citiz, U, Pixie, Miele, Masteria, Grand Masteria, Le Cube, Latissima Plus and Inissia.
They are 100% full recyclable, and the capsule casings are made from polypropylene at food grade, which is safe for food products and they are 100% fully recyclable. They also offer a generous 60-day return policy just for trying their coffee.
We had the pleasure of trying all the Rosso Coffee capsules over the past month, and we love them. They work great in our Citiz Nespresso maker, and the espresso and lungos produced is rich, interesting, and cheaper then Nespresso capsules. NOTE: Rosso Capsules are not compatible with VertouLine Machines.

Nespresso has released an intense roast espresso for the VertuoLine of Nespresso coffees. These capsules produce unexpectedly thick and dense coffee with a rich lingering aftertaste. Brown sugar and strongly toasted notes bring a singular signature to this dark roasted coffee made of Guatemalan Robusta and Central and South American Arabicas.

We just found out about Zebra Coffee - they make crfat coffee Nespresso compatible capsules (thanks to JRav from our Forums - you can read their review here). They’ve got a variety to choose from, and from what we’ve read they’re pretty solid. These will work in all Nespresso Maker but not the VERTUOLINE from Nespresso.
Their Nespresso compatible capsule line up includes:
- Mkali · [moh-kah-lee] · Mkali means bright in Swahili. This light bodied espresso blend features notes of bright, clean lemon zest followed by lightly roasted cocoa and delicate floral notes. A smooth and resonant finish makes this coffee perfect for those looking for a slightly sweeter yet balanced blend.
- Kati · [kah-tee] · Kati means medium in Swahili. This full bodied coffee is fruit forward with a balanced acidity that features notes of baking spices, cocoa and toffee. Medium roasted to perfection highlighting it’s strong aroma with mild flavors.
- Giza · [gee-zuh] · Giza means dark in Swahili. This rich and intense blend features bold notes of baker’s chocolate with mild acidity and a lingering exotic fruit finish. Works great by itself and with milk based beverages.
- Bila · [bee-luh] · Giza literally means without in Swahili. This rich, balanced blend features subtle notes of ripe fruit and caramel leaving a velvety finish. Water processed to remove the caffeine. Enjoy this coffee any time, day or night.
