Part IV: The Illy FrancisFrancis X8 experience - Comparing Espresso and Single Serve Coffee Capsule Systems
The time is the very late 50s and very early 60s and Ike was retiring back to his beloved Gettysburg and a new young Boston Brahman and US Senator was entering the political stage and in Pennsylvania Dutch country the carriages were adding reflectors, some even lights, for safety on the narrow country roads. A few miles north of Lancaster was the small town of Lilitz, population maybe 4000 during the summer and the home of the Wilbur Chocolate Company.
Spring in Northern Maryland and Southern Pennsylvania in that era was wondrous. It was an area of small family farms on some of the most lush and fertile soil in the US worked by Amish and Mennonite families, a land of great but simple foods, rolling hills with a new and startling view around almost every bend. It was easy to see why this area had been desired by both the Penns and Lords Baltimore, desirable enough to fight over and fight over it they did.
Gaggia for Illy Espresso and Single Serve Coffee Machine
Having reviewed the Francis! Francis! iperEspresso machine we are very excited to see Gaggia making one as well to use the illy capsules. We really like the compact footprint of this Gaggia, and the look is out of this world.
The Gaggia for Illy Plus has dedicated on/off, cup-volume, and steam controls; The programmable cup-volume button allows you to adjust the amount of espresso brewed, ensuring the perfect cup every time
While many single-serve machines do not have steaming and frothing capabilities, the Gaggia for Illy Plus has an integrated steam wand and hot water dispenser, making milk-based beverages and teas a breeze to prepare.
Mavea Water Filter - Uses a four-stage filtration process to purify tap water and reduce scale and mineral buildup
Capsule container can hold up to 12 spent capsules
Melitta To Release Caffeo CI Intelligent Coffee Maker
Melitta plans to roll out its new premium coffee machine 'Melitta Caffeo CI' this fall. The Melitta Caffeo CI will debut at the IFA 2010 from September 3rd to 8th in Berlin, Germany. Wondering what's CI? It means Coffee Intelligence. The coffee maker comes with the easy-to-use 'My Coffee Memory' function, and the new 'Plug-in-Milk System' that conjures up the milky foam. The coffee maker is user-friendly and eco friendly too with energy saving functions.
Israeli design student Schmuel Linkski's concrete-encased Lavazza unit is a bold ode to refinement and durability, and probably the toughest roughest espresso machine you could buy. Well, you can't buy it yet as it's more a design concept than a commercial model, but we love the vision, and who doesn't love concrete?
Using iperEspresso capsules, the Francis Francis Y1 iperEspresso Machine is a new design from illy in the single serve coffee and espresso world. The Francis Francis Y1 iperEspresso Machine allows you to make shot of espresso or larger lungo cups of coffee to enjoy both hot and iced. We've been using the Francis Francis Y1 iperEspresso Machine over the past month since illy sent us a review model, and have to say this machine and system is nearly perfect.
Both espresso and lungo cups of coffee brewed hot or over ice have been excellent. There are 4 flavors of iperEspresso capsules available, but we've settled on a double shot of the medium roast over ice as our favorite. How does this system work? How is it different than other single serve coffee and espresso machines?
Dual purpose design can be hard to pull off, but when you combine two of the most popular items on the planet - coffee and music you get genius. Dubbed the "Appresso", this concept espresso and music device does the dual design right providing rich music and caffeine infusions.
The “Appresso” uses the Android technology to inform you about the taste and scent of the coffee, in addition it reads QR-codes from each coffee capsule which helps play a specific song based on which pack you’ve scanned. The "Apresso" was designed by designers In-oh Yoo & Bong-yup Song for Metatrend Institute.
Unboxing the illy FrancisFrancis Y1 iperExpresso Single Serve Coffee and Espresso Machine
Illy's FrancisFrancis Y1 iperEspresso machine is either a thing of beauty or confusing to people from the pictures on the way it looks. After unboxing we can safely tell you in person we love the look of this Y1 espresso maker that uses iperEspresso capsules. The machine has a smaller footprint than you would imagine, and the fit and finish of the machine is startling.
Packed with perfect foam filled side inserts - it's in there tight.
FrancisFrancis Y1 iperEspresso Single Serve Espresso Maker Arrives for Review
Just last week we featured the new Francis Francis Y1 machine, and are happy to report illy has sent us a machine to review. The FrancisFrancis Y1 brings together illy’s iperEspresso capsule system with a simple, one-touch single serve espresso maker. You simply insert a capsule, press the button, and smooth, full-bodied espresso topped with long-lasting crema is exported right into your cup.
So far our impressions are - it's bigger than we thought in the pictures, and we now understand the drawer like table top part is for cup holding proper. We'll have an impressions and review article soon, but right now it's time to make the iperEspresso.
The Francis Francis Y1 machine brings together illy’s iperEspresso capsule system with a simple, one-touch single serve espresso maker. You simply insert a capsule, press the button, and smooth, full-bodied espresso topped with long-lasting crema is exported right into your cup.
The Y1’s aluminum body, tempered glass cupholder and compact silhouette make this espresso maker a bit different. Unlike conventional one-stage systems, the iperEspresso method uses a two-stage process and because extraction takes place entirely inside the capsule, the coffee and machine never come in contact, making for easy clean up.
We've yet to try the illy iperEspresso machines, but will be angling for a review unit soon. Thanks to Richard for sending this in.
Kalorik Coffee Maker - 4 Cup Coffee Maker with Built-In Grinder
Sure it uses actual coffee beans to grind, and brew up to 4 cups of coffee at time, but you can still make a single cup of coffee with the Kalorik Magic Bean Personal Burr Grind & Brew Coffee Maker. A special patented burr grinder automatically grinds the beans before brewing to ensure the grounds are as fresh as possible. A grind control dial lets you program the amount of coffee to grind, can make from 1 to 4 individual cups, while a strength selector offers a choice from strong to mild coffee flavor. Once brewing is complete, the fresh coffee is delivered into a 9 oz stainless steel cup.
The brewing process can also be interrupted with the so that you can taste the cup before brewing is finished. This specialty coffee maker also features permanent stainless steel filter, coffee ready signal, safety photo censors that will stop brewing process if detected that the jug or the filter holder are not well positioned, removable grinder for easy cleaning, and includes a travel cup base attachment to fit into you car cup holder, when you need it on the go.
We're going to see if we can track one of these down. It looks like instead of spending over $1500 for a super automatic - this brewed coffee slim down of a machine at $199 could be an interesting alternative.
Internet-connected Single Serve Coffee Maker has Security Issues
The Jura F90 Super-automatic espresso and coffee maker
can be hacked because the espresso machine can be accessed via the internet
for diagnostics and setting up the espresso machine.
We truly live in modern times when your single serve coffee maker can be connected online and hacked to make weak coffee. We've reviewed other models that didn't have the ability to be connected, but think it's pretty wild this $2,000 Jura F90 coffee maker can be connected to the Internet for remote control of the settings and be hacked. This can open up your PC to remote attacks, a security expert says. Once connected to the Internet the Jura F90 lets you set the strength of your espresso or coffee and get remote diagnostic info over the internet that would be used to send to the company if there's a problem.
"I don't know if many people would target this particular vulnerability because there probably are not a lot of coffee makers at the moment that are Internet-connected, and in my case it's behind a firewall," the owner who found the issue said.
With internet enabled kitchen devices becoming more widely available, expect more security issues in the future. We think having someone hack your single serve coffee maker isn't the end of the world, but perhaps we'll keep our larger appliance like the oven disconnected.
Nespresso Lattissima - One Touch Cappuccinos and Lattes
Yesterday, Nespresso and DeLonghi unveiled the next generation of espresso meets cappuccino and latte machines - the Nespresso Lattissima. The Nespresso Lattissima features a "one touch" fresh milk froth function, allowing you to make a latte or cappuccino with just one push of a button. We witnessed the Nespresso Lattissima in person and got to sample the cappuccino and latte drinks it produced - verdict - amazing.
Because the Nespresso Lattissima uses fresh milk the difference in the quality of the latte or cappuccino is staggering. The Nespresso Lattissima also features an "auto clean" function, and the milk reservoir detaches from the machine so you can keep it nice and cool in the fridge for the next cappuccino or latte you make. Another cool feature is the adjustable cup platform, which allows you to use a tall latte glass or a traditional coffee cup. The Nespresso Lattissima will be priced at $799 for the satin chrome with cup warmer, and $699 for red or black sans the cup warmer and will be out Fall 2007.
Full details and video of the Nespresso Lattissima after the jump.
